Immich and PhotoPrism provide built-in people workflows, while Nextcloud’s documented face-recognition route is the separate Recognize app, with results shown in Memories. All three can help find photos by people, but their search tools and setup differ. Official documentation does not establish which recognizes faces most accurately or quickly, so the useful comparison is how each pipeline works, what you can search, and where you may need to correct results.
What face recognition does—and what it does not guarantee
Face recognition in a photo library is a sequence of separate tasks: find a face in an image, convert it into a numerical representation called an embedding, group similar embeddings, and let a person assign names or correct the groups. Searching then uses those groups, names, or other image information. A miss at the detection stage cannot be fixed by better naming, and a mistaken cluster can put different people under one name.

Neither product descriptions nor a feature list tells you how accurately a system will handle your own collection. Image size and quality, pose, age differences, processing state, model, settings, hardware, and library size all affect results. The official documents reviewed here do not supply a common test set, comparable accuracy percentages, or a speed benchmark for these three systems. It would be misleading to declare an overall winner on those measures.
The distinctions below are based on official documentation accessed on October 9, 2026. Product documentation is updated over time, and availability depends on the software release and deployment you use; verify the documentation for your installed version before changing a configuration.

How Immich recognizes people and searches photos
From preview to people group
Immich’s documented process begins with generated preview images. Its machine-learning service detects faces and returns bounding boxes and scores. Face crops are then passed to a recognition model; embeddings are indexed for matching and grouping. The resulting people interface lets users name a person, view associated assets, merge detected people, hide faces, mark a person as a favorite, and set a date of birth. The Immich facial-recognition guide describes this workflow.
The grouping method is derived from DBSCAN and adapted for libraries that keep receiving new photos. Immich’s documentation says it waits for face detection and thumbnail generation before clustering where possible, since a larger batch can improve grouping. Incremental clustering and a later full rerun can produce different results; the system is not simply assigning every new image to a permanently settled group as soon as it arrives.
Two settings shape the results: a minimum number of recognized faces and a recognition-distance threshold. More permissive matching can join unrelated faces; a stricter threshold can leave duplicates or faces unassigned. If groups look wrong, review the settings and correct the people manually rather than assuming a name or match is definitive. The exact balance depends on the library, so the documentation does not give one universally appropriate threshold.

Person search versus contextual search
Immich offers two different kinds of search that are easy to confuse. A person filter searches using recognized people. Contextual search uses CLIP embeddings to match a natural-language query to image content. It does not create a set of inspectable labels, tags, or descriptions from that matching process. For example, contextual matching is conceptually different from searching a stored tag that a user added to an image.

The Immich search guide also documents filters for recognized people, location, filename or path, OCR-detected text, tags, camera, date, media type, and albums. Those structured filters are useful when a natural-language query is too broad or when you know a specific detail about where or how an image was captured. The Immich FAQ explains the CLIP-based contextual-search approach.
Processing location and timing
Recognition depends on background jobs completing face detection and thumbnail generation; an empty or incomplete people view may mean processing has not finished. Immich can send previews to a remote machine-learning container for Smart Search and face detection. Its remote-ML documentation distinguishes that work from clustering, which is handled between the server and database. Before enabling a remote service, consider where it runs and who controls that host, because preview images are sent to it. See the remote machine-learning guide for deployment details.
Immich’s FAQ describes recognition based on generated thumbnails; do not assume the system analyzes every frame of a video. That distinction matters when a person appears only briefly or at a moment not represented in the thumbnail.
How PhotoPrism handles people and face search
Three stages, followed by manual organization
PhotoPrism documents a pipeline of face detection, embedding, and clustering. Detection locates faces; embedding represents each face as a vector; clustering groups similar vectors so a user can assign a person to a group. Its People view includes both recognized people and new clusters that still need review. Recognition does not begin until the library scan is complete, according to the PhotoPrism People guide.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
That sequencing has a practical consequence: a newly added library may need to finish scanning before people results become available. Searching or updating faces may also temporarily create high CPU load. Older hardware can take longer, and the documentation does not provide a fixed processing time because library size and hardware vary. Treat the first populated People view as a result of background work, not as proof that the index is complete or that every face was found.
Useful PhotoPrism query syntax
PhotoPrism makes face-related search explicit. Its People guide documents these examples:
people, faces, orfaces:truefinds images with people or detected faces.faces:falsefinds images without detected people.faces:3finds images with at least three faces.person:"John Doe"orsubject:"John Doe"searches for an exact person name.people:"John"orsubjects:"John"supports partial matching.face:newfinds images with unknown people.
Filters can be combined, which makes it possible to narrow a search by people and another condition rather than browsing a person’s entire collection. For example, a user could combine a person-oriented query with a date or other supported filter. Use the exact syntax documented for your release; this is not a promise that the same query language exists in Immich or the base Nextcloud Photos experience.
Misses, false positives, and model changes
PhotoPrism lists several reasons a face may be missed: scanning may be incomplete; a face may be small; thumbnail size or quality and image contrast may be poor; filtering may reject a candidate; or stack behavior may affect what is processed. Non-upright faces are often missed. Its documentation also warns that automatic recognition is less reliable for young children and for the same person photographed many years apart. These are important limits when a library spans a person’s childhood or many decades.

The model used by a library is another operational detail. PhotoPrism’s user guide says new libraries use SFace, while libraries created before SFace became available retain FaceNet. Changing a configuration value alone does not switch an existing library’s model. Migration re-embeds faces and is a deliberate operation; PhotoPrism recommends making a backup first. The face-recognition user guide covers model behavior, and the developer guide, last updated October 6, 2026, describes the pipeline and clustering implementation. The model names are not evidence that one app is more accurate than another.
Using existing people metadata
PhotoPrism can read Exif and XMP metadata, including sidecar files. When names assigned to faces in other photo applications are stored as supported XMP metadata, PhotoPrism can import them. The documentation names Adobe Bridge, Lightroom, digiKam, ACDSee, and Windows as examples of applications whose face names may be available through supported XMP metadata. This can be useful when moving an organized collection, but the names must actually be present in compatible metadata; using one of those applications does not by itself guarantee that labels will transfer. See PhotoPrism’s metadata support documentation.

Recognize and Memories are part of the workflow
For Nextcloud, separate the photo experience from the recognition add-on. The official administration manual describes the Recognize app as providing face recognition and media tagging functionality for Memories. Face results appear under Memories’ People section. It does not support saying that every Nextcloud Photos installation has face recognition enabled by default, nor does the cited manual establish a general-purpose Photos query syntax comparable to PhotoPrism’s examples.
The manual describes two processing routes: built-in Node.js/TensorFlow.js classifiers running on Nextcloud nodes, or a containerized recognize_backend ExApp using AppAPI and Nextcloud TaskProcessing. Recognize also tags objects and landmarks and classifies audio genres and video actions. Its administration manual says it uses open-source models and runs entirely on-premises. For the app’s requirements and current installation details, consult the Nextcloud Recognize administration manual for the server version you run.

Because this is an app-and-backend integration, confirm that Recognize and Memories are installed and that the chosen classifier route is configured in your deployment before expecting a People view. The available functions depend on installed apps, backend, and version; the manual’s description should not be generalized to an unconfigured Nextcloud server.
How to choose for your library
Choose based on the workflow and constraints you value, not a ranking that the available documentation cannot substantiate. The same app can behave differently across two collections, and feature descriptions do not substitute for a controlled accuracy or speed test.
- Choose Immich’s approach if you want an integrated people workflow together with contextual CLIP search and a wide set of structured filters. Consider its background processing, incremental clustering behavior, threshold controls, and whether previews would be sent to a remote ML service in your setup.
- Choose PhotoPrism’s approach if explicit face and person query syntax or importing supported XMP face-name metadata is especially useful. Account for the scan-before-recognition sequence, CPU load during indexing or updates, and the possibility of missed faces or imperfect clusters.
- Consider Nextcloud with Recognize if your photo workflow is already based on Nextcloud and you want face results in Memories. Verify the app integration and backend route for your server rather than assuming the base Photos experience supplies recognition.
Check the workload and privacy model before indexing
Face processing is background work, so estimate the practical load from the size and state of your library and the hardware available to your server. The documentation describes processing and CPU considerations but gives no shared hardware baseline or comparable completion times. If your server is resource-constrained, plan for indexing to compete with other work and avoid treating an initial delay as an accuracy problem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Also distinguish local processing from delegated processing. Immich documents an optional remote ML container that receives previews. Nextcloud’s Recognize manual describes its models as on-premises. These are deployment facts, not blanket privacy guarantees: you still need to know where your server, containers, storage, and backups actually run and who can access them.
Use a small verification pass before trusting the index
- Confirm the feature is available: in Immich, check that face processing is enabled and jobs are running; in PhotoPrism, let scanning complete; in Nextcloud, confirm Recognize and Memories are present and the documented backend is configured.
- Inspect the result rather than assuming completeness: review people groups or new clusters, search for people you know are represented, and check a mix of clear portraits and harder images such as small, turned, or older faces.
- Correct errors using the product’s people workflow: name, merge, or otherwise manage groups where supported. If one person is split across groups or different people are joined, adjust the grouping or recognition settings carefully and reassess the result.
- Keep source metadata and backups in mind: PhotoPrism’s metadata route can be valuable for migration when supported XMP names exist. Back up before a PhotoPrism model migration, which re-embeds faces.
- Recheck after upgrades or configuration changes: feature behavior, defaults, and app compatibility can change between releases, so verify version-specific documentation before relying on an old setup guide.
What “best face recognition” can responsibly mean
If “best” means highest measured accuracy or fastest processing, the official documentation reviewed here does not answer the question: it contains no comparable cross-project benchmark. Model labels, presence of a search box, and breadth of features are not substitutes for running the same representative library under controlled conditions and checking both missed faces and wrong matches.
For a practical decision, define the outcome you care about. A searchable, editable People view is different from natural-language image discovery; importing existing XMP labels is different from automatic matching; and keeping processing within a Nextcloud deployment is different from opting into a remote ML service. Compare those requirements against your library and installation, then verify the actual results on representative photos instead of trusting a universal accuracy claim.
