How Four-Finger Robot Hands Grasp Objects Differently From Human Hands

Four non-thumb fingers do not guarantee human-like grasping. Thumb opposition, finger independence, contact-driven adaptation, and demonstrated manipulation all matter.

A four-finger robot hand can gain another contact point, but it does not automatically gain human-like dexterity. Its grasp depends on the thumb’s opposition, how independently its fingers move, whether they spread, and how the mechanism responds when fingers touch an object. “Four-finger” usually means four non-thumb digits plus a thumb—not a standard design or a promise of any particular capability.

What the extra finger can change

A fourth non-thumb digit gives a hand another possible contact point. In one studied soft-hand design, the added finger directly opposes the thumb, helping the hand enclose an object and adding contact force near its center. The authors also describe additional grasp options, including a two-finger pinch on small objects. Those findings apply to that configuration; they do not establish that every four-finger hand grips more securely or pinches better than every three-finger design. (DRL soft-hand study)

The number of fingers alone does not tell you how many actuators or joints a hand has, or how it is controlled. For example, the DRL hand is modular and places its added finger opposite the thumb, while the mini X-hand paper describes fingers driven synergistically and a separately driven thumb. Why thumb opposition matters

The thumb helps determine which contacts a hand can make and the direction in which it can apply force. Human grasp classifications account for thumb position and opposition alongside the grouping of fingers, and distinguish power-oriented, precision-oriented, and intermediate grasps. A robot thumb with limited opposition or fewer degrees of freedom than a human thumb may reach fewer positions or orient its pad differently. That affects not only how the hand closes around an object, but also whether it can reposition the object after grasping. (GRASP taxonomy) (mini X-hand paper)

How the fingers move and adapt

Independent control versus underactuation

An underactuated finger has fewer independent actuators than degrees of freedom. When it closes, where it meets an object can influence its shape and how contact forces are distributed. This can let the finger conform passively to different shapes, but gives the controller less direct control over exact joint positions and contact forces than fully actuated movement would. Adaptation here is a mechanical response to contact, not human-like judgment. (underactuated-hand review)

Robotic hands make different trade-offs: coordinated finger synergies can support a broad set of grasp postures with less independent control, while other mechanisms emphasize conforming around objects. Simplicity, robustness, and passive adaptation may come at the cost of fine-grained control. (underactuated-hand review)

Finger spreading and coordination

Abduction and adduction—the spreading and drawing together of fingers—change a hand’s span and the orientation of its contacts. A study of movement at the metacarpophalangeal joints of the four non-thumb fingers reported improvements in grasp-size and force measures, as well as simulated grasp quality and robotic-hand success measures. These are results under that study’s methods and test conditions, not universal effect sizes for robot hands. (finger abduction/adduction study)

Why human grasping is more than open, close, and hold

Human hands vary their posture with an object and a task. The GRASP taxonomy identifies 33 stable, static, one-hand grasp types, or 17 broader configurations when object shape and size are set aside. A separate study recorded hand kinematics and muscle activity from 40 healthy participants performing 20 unique grasps, then grouped the movements into five broad categories. The different classifications describe grasp variation in different ways; neither makes a simple open-close description sufficient. (GRASP taxonomy) (human grasp study)

Robotic hands often simplify or coordinate motion rather than independently reproducing every human finger movement. One paper reports that its mini X-hand reproduced 29 of the 33 GRASP taxonomy types. That is the authors’ result for their particular hand and evaluation, not a general score for four-finger robot hands or a direct comparison with human performance. (mini X-hand paper)

Grasping is not the same as in-hand manipulation

Closing around an object, lifting it, or holding it does not show that a hand can change the object’s pose while keeping it in the hand. In-hand manipulation calls for controlled movement after the initial grasp. Thumb mobility and independent finger control matter to that task, so a design’s ability to enclose an object should not be treated as proof of human-like manipulation. (mini X-hand paper)

How to compare four-finger hand designs

When evaluating two robot hands, compare the mechanisms and demonstrations rather than relying on finger count:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Thumb opposition: Which digits can the thumb reach, and how can it orient its contact surface?
  • Finger independence: Can each finger be commanded on its own, or do several move through a shared mechanism or synergy?
  • Response to contact: Does the hand passively conform as it closes, and how much control does the system retain over the resulting posture and forces?
  • Contact layout and span: Does the extra finger create a useful opposing contact? Can the fingers spread to accommodate different object sizes?
  • Demonstrated grasp repertoire: Which grasp types were actually tested, and under what taxonomy or protocol?
  • In-hand manipulation: Was the hand shown to reorient an object after grasping, or only to lift and hold it?

Results from unrelated papers should not be treated as a shared benchmark: success rates, grasp-type counts, and payload claims may come from different systems and test methods.
