Fortnite does not continuously send every voice conversation to Epic for review. When Voice Reporting is on, the game keeps a rolling five-minute audio buffer on participants’ devices; a participant must submit a report for reportable audio to be sent to Epic moderators. Reporting lets Epic review suspected misconduct, but it does not by itself prove a violation or guarantee a penalty.
How does voice reporting in Fortnite work?
When Voice Reporting is on, Fortnite keeps the latest five minutes of voice chat in a rolling buffer on participants’ devices, such as a console or PC. As the buffer advances, older audio is deleted. If someone reports the conversation, the report and the last five minutes of audio are sent to Epic moderators. Epic says it cannot access voice-chat audio unless Voice Reporting is on and a participant submits a report. Epic’s voice-reporting FAQ and its November 16, 2023 announcement describe this process.

Voice Reporting is always on for players under 18, according to Epic. Adults can choose a preference, but “Off When Possible” is conditional: it turns reporting off only in qualifying parties formed among friends when every participant has selected that setting. Check the Voice Reporting status shown in the game rather than assuming the preference applies to every party or channel. Muting yourself or turning voice chat off are separate controls.

Epic provides in-game ways to report a voice conversation, a text conversation or message, and a player. The available options can depend on whether the relevant chat feature and reporting settings are enabled. Menu names and placement may vary as Fortnite’s interface changes.

- Voice conversation: Open the relevant profile or social controls, choose the menu for the conversation, then select Report chat. When Voice Reporting is on, only the latest five minutes are reportable.
- Text chat: When text chat and text reporting are enabled, submit a conversation from the Chats interface or use a specific message’s menu to report that message.
- Player conduct: Open the in-game report menu, the player’s profile, or a recently played or voice-channel player list; select the player and choose the applicable reason.
Epic says reports help it decide whether conduct violates its Terms of Service or Code of Conduct. Describe what happened accurately. A submitted report is an input for review, not a finding that the reported player broke a rule. Epic’s instructions are in its guide to reporting bad player behavior.
How do I manage my party, voice chat, and text chat options in Fortnite?
Choose Party Chat or Game Chat
Party Chat connects members of a party across Epic surfaces. Game Chat communicates with players in the same island instance when the island creator supports it. These are different conversation contexts, so check which one is active before troubleshooting who can hear you.

Set who can communicate with you
Epic lists communication preferences of Everybody; Friends, Team Members, and Connections; Friends Only; and Off. The controls also include mute, unmute, and deafen. Use the audience preference to limit who can communicate with the account; Voice Reporting status separately governs whether the rolling voice buffer is available for a report.
Account age and parental controls can narrow the choices
Epic says communication settings default to Off for players who indicated they are under 18, and children under 10 have a maximum chat setting of Friends Only. Parental controls can set stricter limits. Cabined accounts may not have voice or text chat until a parent or guardian completes the consent process. Available options may change at age thresholds, so parents should verify the current choices in both the game and the Epic account parental-controls settings. Epic also cautions that switching off voice chat in an Epic game may not disable a console’s separate party-chat system. Parents should review the console’s own communication and parental-control settings as well as Epic’s. Epic’s parental-controls guidance explains the account-side options.
What happens after a Fortnite report?
Epic reviews reports to determine whether action is warranted under its rules. It does not publish a fixed penalty for every type of voice report. Its policy says consequences depend on the severity and number of offenses; possible measures include:

- A warning.
- Removal of offending content in relevant experiences or marketplaces.
- A temporary restriction on features, including purchases, adding friends, or social features such as voice or text chat.
- A permanent account ban.
These are possible enforcement measures, not an automatic sequence or a promise that a particular report will lead to a sanction. Epic outlines them in its Community Rules and reporting-misconduct guidance.
How do I appeal a communication ban on my Epic Games account?
- Check the email associated with the Epic account for the case notice and Sanction ID.
- Sign in to Epic’s Sanctions and Appeals portal and review the case using the Sanction ID.
- If the case is eligible, follow the portal’s appeal steps. Some violations are not eligible for appeal.
Epic Support says it cannot review or override a communication ban; the portal is the specified route for an eligible appeal. Details are in Epic’s communication-ban appeal instructions.
