Formula 1 practice is scheduled track time for teams to check their cars, learn the circuit, gather driver feedback and prepare for qualifying and the race. FP1 results show the order of the fastest recorded laps in that session; they are not a race result and, on their own, do not establish who has the quickest car for qualifying or the Grand Prix.
What happens during Formula 1 practice?
Practice gives teams time to assess the car and circuit before the sessions that decide the starting order and the race. Drivers build familiarity with the track, report how the car behaves, and help their teams work on setup. Teams may also use an early session to assess new aerodynamic parts.

How many practice sessions are there?
| Weekend format | Usual practice schedule |
|---|---|
| Standard Grand Prix weekend | FP1 and FP2 on Friday, followed by FP3 on Saturday; each session is usually one hour. |
| Sprint weekend | One practice session before Sprint Qualifying. The usual session is one hour, but event-specific changes can alter the schedule. |
For example, Formula 1 reported that the sole FP1 at the 2026 Miami Sprint weekend was extended to 90 minutes. Check the event schedule for the applicable session times.

What is each session generally for?
FP1: checks, track learning and early setup
In FP1, teams commonly check that the car is working, give drivers time to learn the circuit, collect feedback and begin setup work. They may also evaluate new aerodynamic parts.
FP2: longer runs and race preparation
FP2 often includes longer runs to help teams prepare for the race. When conditions allow, teams may also run qualifying simulations.

FP3: final preparation before qualifying
FP3 often focuses on shorter runs as drivers prepare for qualifying. Formula 1’s weekend guide describes it as the final practice before parc fermé conditions begin, when most work on the car is banned. The precise scope and timing of those restrictions depend on the regulations; this overview does not set out their detailed rules.

What does an FP1 result show?
An official session result typically lists each driver’s position, team, time or gap, and completed laps. For example, Formula 1’s 2026 Bahrain FP1 result page ranks drivers by their recorded session times and gives their lap counts. The classification tells you who set the quickest listed lap and provides a basic indication of how much each driver ran.

It does not show the full run plan or make FP1 equivalent to qualifying. A driver near the top may have set a quick lap, but the public classification alone does not explain the conditions behind it.
Why an FP1 leaderboard is not a reliable forecast
Teams may be pursuing different goals and running different fuel loads or tyre compounds. Track conditions can change during the session, and drivers may complete different numbers of laps. Those differences make direct comparisons difficult. Formula 1 puts the limitation plainly: “Cars carry different fuel loads and drivers use different tyre compounds in varying conditions over the three practice sessions, so it’s not always easy to determine who’s going to be fast solely by using practice times.” (Formula 1’s beginner’s guide to the F1 weekend.)

So treat a strong FP1 as an early signal, not proof of a car’s underlying pace or a prediction of the finishing order. Later practice and qualifying provide more evidence, though they too need to be read in context.

- Separate position from pace: session position is simply the order of recorded times, not a controlled comparison of the cars.
- Look at the time gap and lap count together: a small gap is easier to interpret when both drivers have had a similar amount of running, but lap counts alone do not reveal what each driver was testing.
- Compare like with like only when context is available: tyre, fuel, track conditions and run purpose all matter. The public result page does not supply every detail needed to account for them.
Where to check the session schedule and results
Session formats can vary by event, and a Sprint weekend has less practice time than a standard one. Check Formula 1’s weekend guide for the usual format, then consult the event schedule for changes. For a specific session, Formula 1’s 2026 Bahrain FP1 results show the classification fields, including lap times and lap counts.
