How Formal Proof Assistants Like Lean Verify Mathematical Proofs

Lean verifies proofs by checking elaborated proof terms in a trusted kernel. This guide explains propositions as types, tactics, elaboration, automation, axioms, dependency inspection and the limits of a green checkmark.

Lean verifies a mathematical proof by checking a proof term against a formal proposition in its trusted kernel. The proposition is represented as a type, the proof as a term inhabiting that type, and the kernel checks that the term really has the required type under the definitions, imported declarations, and axioms in scope.

A green check therefore means something precise: Lean’s kernel accepted a formal statement from a particular environment. It does not, by itself, show that the statement captures the informal theorem a mathematician had in mind, or that every imported assumption is mathematically appropriate. Understanding the boundary between formal verification and human interpretation is essential.

What Lean is actually checking

Lean is based on dependent type theory. In this setting, a proposition is encoded as a type and a proof is a term whose type is that proposition. To verify a theorem, Lean must establish that the submitted term is well formed and has exactly the type declared by the theorem.

For a theorem written as theorem t : p := ..., the target is the proposition p. A successful proof supplies a term t such that Lean can check t : p. The checker is not grading the prose of a human argument. It is type-checking formal evidence.

This distinction explains both Lean’s strength and its limit. A valid term certifies the encoded statement relative to its environment. It cannot correct an incorrectly formalized definition, a mistaken translation of an informal claim, or an unjustified assumption imported as an axiom.

How does Lean verify a proof?

A proof normally passes through four connected stages. Tactics and notation make authoring convenient, but the final authority is the kernel.

  1. The author writes a proposition and proof

You can provide a proof directly as a term or use a tactic script beginning with by. A tactic script works with a proof state: the current goals and the local assumptions available to solve them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Elaboration expands the surface syntax

Lean’s elaborator translates convenient user syntax into expressions in the smaller core type theory. It infers implicit arguments, resolves overloaded notation and expected types, inserts information omitted by the author, and checks that names and applications make sense. Tactic execution is a specialized form of elaboration: tactics manipulate a proof state while constructing the expression that will eventually be returned.

  3. Tactics construct a proof term

A tactic can introduce assumptions, split a conjunction, rewrite an expression, apply a theorem, invoke a decision procedure or fail with an unsolved goal. Its result is not trusted merely because the tactic reported success. The tactic has produced a term for the target.

  4. The kernel checks the term

The trusted kernel checks the elaborated term against the core rules of Lean’s type theory. It verifies that every application has an appropriate function and argument type, that referenced declarations exist with the types claimed for them, and that the complete term has the theorem’s target type. Only after this check does Lean accept the declaration.

“Each tactic produces a term in the core type theory that is checked by the kernel, so bugs in tactics do not threaten the soundness of Lean as a whole.”

The Lean Language Reference, Lean project

Propositions as types, with a small example

Consider the proposition p → p. A proof is a function: it takes evidence that p is true and returns that same evidence. In term form, the idea is:

fun hp : p => hp

The function has type p → p, so it is a proof of that proposition. The tactic version expresses the same construction operationally:

theorem identity (p : Prop) : p → p := by
  intro hp
  exact hp

intro hp turns the implication into a local assumption named hp. The goal becomes p, and exact hp supplies a term whose type is precisely that goal. Elaboration turns the script into a core expression equivalent to the function above; the kernel checks the resulting expression.

More complicated proofs use the same principle. A proof of a conjunction contains evidence for both components. A proof of an existential proposition contains a witness together with evidence that the witness satisfies the required property. Dependent types allow later parts of a type to refer to earlier values, which lets Lean express detailed relationships between data and proofs.

What does the kernel actually check?

The kernel checks the formal object, not the author’s intention. Its job includes type formation, application, reduction according to the core computation rules, and consistency of references to declarations in the current environment. If a tactic generated an ill-typed expression, the kernel rejects it even if the tactic itself contains a bug.

Lean’s architecture is designed around a small core kernel, while the surrounding language and library provide rich notation, metaprogramming and automation. “Small” describes the trusted checking core, not the entire software ecosystem. The validation claim also depends on the declarations and axioms that the kernel is asked to use.

The kernel does not replay a human-readable explanation in the way a reader evaluates a textbook proof. It checks a compact, formal proof term. That term is independently checkable evidence: an external checker implementing the relevant core rules can, in principle, verify it without trusting the tactic that produced it.

Can a tactic bug make Lean accept a false theorem?

An ordinary tactic bug should not make an invalid term pass the kernel. A faulty tactic can loop, fail to close a goal, construct a term with the wrong type and trigger an error, or waste substantial computation. The kernel still checks the final term.

This separation lets users extend Lean with tactics and decision procedures. The Lean 4 system description by Leonardo de Moura and Sebastian Ullrich (2021) discusses extensibility and gives examples used in mathematical libraries, including a ring-theory solver and a Presburger-arithmetic decision procedure. Such automation is useful because it searches for or constructs proof terms; it is not a second, unchecked route around the kernel.

The trust boundary is therefore layered:

Layer Role What must be trusted
Formal statement Defines the proposition to prove That the definitions and wording express the intended mathematics
Imported declarations Provide definitions, prior theorems and interfaces That library statements are correct and appropriately specified
Tactics and elaborator Construct a candidate core term Mostly their ability to produce a term; the kernel checks the result
Kernel Checks the core term against the type theory The kernel implementation and its foundational rules
Axioms Supply propositions without a derivation in the current theory That each additional assumption is acceptable for the intended result

What a successful check establishes—and what it does not

What it establishes

  • The elaborated proof term has the type claimed by the theorem.
  • The term is valid under the definitions, previous declarations and axioms visible in the environment.
  • Any theorem used as a dependency was accepted under its own environment and assumptions.
  • The result can be checked again by Lean’s kernel, and proof-term-oriented workflows can use an independent checker.

What it does not establish

  • That the formal theorem matches the informal statement a mathematician intended.
  • That names, definitions or notation were chosen in a mathematically natural way.
  • That every imported library theorem has been interpreted correctly for your application.
  • That a theorem using an additional axiom is derivable without that axiom.

The precise claim is therefore: Lean’s kernel checked a proof of this formal statement from these declarations and assumptions. Saying simply that “Lean proved the informal theorem true” is broader than the evidence supports.

Axioms, incomplete proofs and dependency inspection

An axiom declaration postulates an inhabitant of a proposition instead of deriving one. Any theorem that depends on it is conditional on that assumption. In the extreme case, postulating a proof of False would allow a proof of any proposition, because from contradiction every proposition follows in the logic.

Lean’s validation guidance recommends inspecting dependencies with #print axioms. For a theorem named result, enter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
#print axioms result

The output identifies axioms on which the declaration depends. An entry such as sorryAx signals an incomplete proof introduced with sorry. A custom axiom indicates that the theorem is valid relative to that explicitly postulated assumption. Neither case means the kernel failed; it means the theorem’s assumptions are stronger than a derivation from previously established definitions and theorems alone.

Exactly which built-in items are listed, and how particular automation is represented, can vary with the Lean release. The validation chapter in the maintained Lean 4 documentation includes version-specific notes, including changes discussed around Lean 4.29.0 and 4.35.0. Treat the output produced by the version you are using as authoritative for that environment.

A complete proof workflow in practice

When evaluating a formal result, separate the mechanical check from the mathematical review. The following sequence keeps those questions distinct.

  1. Read the theorem statement first

Identify every variable, type, hypothesis, definition and quantifier. Check edge cases such as empty sets, zero denominators, boundary indices or implicit coercions. A perfectly checked theorem can be weaker or different from the informal claim if the statement omits a needed condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Check the proof in the declared environment

Use the same Lean version, imports and namespace settings as the project. Elaboration can depend on available declarations and version-specific behavior, so a proof copied into a different environment may fail or resolve names differently.

  3. Inspect dependencies

Run #print axioms theoremName. Record whether the result depends only on the expected foundational assumptions, on imported library declarations, on custom axioms, or on sorryAx.

  4. Review definitions and library statements

Open the definitions used by the theorem and verify that they encode the intended concepts. For imported theorems, confirm hypotheses, domains and conventions rather than relying only on a familiar name.

  5. Interpret the result with the right scope

Report the theorem as established relative to its formal environment. If an axiom or unverified specification is essential, state that dependency alongside the result.

Common misunderstandings and their fixes

“The green checkmark means the informal argument is correct.”

It means the formal term has the formal target type. Compare the statement and definitions with the intended mathematics before drawing a broader conclusion.

“Automation is less trustworthy than a handwritten proof.”

Automation may be harder for a human to read, but its output still faces the same kernel check. The practical concern is transparency and maintainability, not a bypass of type checking.

“No visible axiom means no assumptions exist.”

Every theorem has foundational rules and dependencies. Use #print axioms and inspect imported declarations; do not infer logical independence from a short proof script.

“A failed tactic proves the theorem is false.”

A tactic failure usually says that a particular construction method did not solve the current proof state. Try a different lemma, expose an implicit hypothesis, simplify the goal or use another tactic. Failure to find a term is not a counterexample.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A theorem is portable as long as the text looks identical.”

Imports, namespaces, notation, library versions and elaboration changes matter. Recheck the declaration in the target project rather than assuming identical text has identical meaning everywhere.

How to describe Lean’s guarantee accurately

A careful explanation should name all four relevant parties: the formal statement, the term-building machinery, the kernel and the human reviewer. Tactics and elaboration help transform a readable script into core type theory. The kernel then checks the resulting term. Humans must still decide whether the proposition, imported libraries and axioms represent the mathematics they care about.

The current Lean Language Reference reviewed for this explanation identifies version 4.35.0-rc4; release-specific validation guidance can change, so projects should consult the reference that matches their installed version. The 2021 Lean 4 system description remains useful for architectural context, but it is a design paper rather than a replacement for current reference behavior.

The practical bottom line

Lean is best understood as a certificate checker built around dependent type theory. You write a formal proposition and a term-producing proof script; elaboration translates that script into core expressions; and the kernel checks that the final term inhabits the proposition. A tactic cannot normally smuggle an ill-typed proof past the kernel. The meaningful qualification is that acceptance is relative to the formal statement, imported declarations and axioms. Mechanical verification is exact, but deciding whether the formalized theorem says what you intended remains a human responsibility.
