For free credit reports from all three nationwide bureaus, use the federally authorized AnnualCreditReport.com, which is currently available online weekly. A report usually does not contain a score. To see an actual FICO Score without paying, check your existing card, bank, auto-loan or mortgage account and verify the score label, bureau, model and date. Your own report check is a soft inquiry and does not lower your score.

Report first, score second: what you are actually checking

A credit report is the underlying file maintained by a credit-reporting company. It can list your identifying information, credit accounts, balances, payment history, collections, inquiries and public-record data. A credit score is a number calculated from information in a report using a particular scoring model. In most cases, a report you obtain for free does not include a score.

“FICO score” is also not one universal number. Different FICO versions are built for different products, and each nationwide bureau can have different data on file. A lender may therefore see a different FICO score from the one displayed in your banking app. The useful question is not simply “What is my score?” but “Which bureau, FICO version and calculation date does this score represent?”

Best free route for all three credit reports

Use AnnualCreditReport.com

AnnualCreditReport.com is the federally authorized site for free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can request one report, two reports or all three during the same session. You can also spread requests out so that you monitor one bureau at a time.

  1. Type AnnualCreditReport.com directly into your browser rather than following an unfamiliar advertisement or email link.
  2. Choose the bureau or bureaus you want to review.
  3. Complete the identity-verification questions. The questions can refer to older addresses, account amounts or lenders and are designed to confirm that you are the person requesting the file.
  4. Save a copy of each report or record the date you accessed it. Downloading or printing helps you compare changes later.
  5. Read every section, including personal information, account status, payment history, collections and inquiries.

USAGov’s credit-report guide, updated November 13, 2025, also lists two alternatives: call 1-877-322-8228, or request reports by mail using the Annual Credit Report request form. The phone and mail routes are useful if you cannot complete the online identity check.

How often can you request reports?

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance says each of the three nationwide bureaus currently makes an online report available weekly at no charge. That is more frequent than the traditional “once a year” description. The same CFPB guidance says consumers may obtain up to six free Equifax reports in a 12-month period through December 2026. That Equifax provision is temporary; check the current terms before relying on it after 2026 or planning a monitoring schedule.

There is no requirement to request all three reports together. Requesting them separately can give you regular checkpoints, while requesting all three at once is efficient when you are preparing for a major application or checking for identity theft.

How to get a free FICO score

Check accounts you already have

Start with the website or monthly statement for your credit-card issuer, bank, auto lender, mortgage servicer or other lender. Many institutions show a score to existing customers, sometimes monthly. Look for a page labeled “credit score,” “FICO Score” or “score access” rather than assuming that a number on a dashboard is a FICO score.

Before using the number, open its details and record:

  • Whether it is explicitly a FICO Score or another educational score.
  • Which bureau supplied the underlying report.
  • The FICO model or version, if shown.
  • The date on which the score was calculated or the report data was last updated.
  • Whether the score is refreshed monthly, after a statement closes or on another schedule.

FICO says its Score Open Access program works with more than 130 financial institutions. A participating bank, card issuer, auto lender or mortgage servicer may provide some FICO scores and score factors at no charge. Participation does not mean every customer receives a score, every bureau is covered or the version matches the score used for your next application.

Look for a score in certain lender notices

Some consumers receive a FICO score in a mortgage-related score disclosure or in an adverse-action or risk-based-pricing notice. These disclosures depend on the transaction and the notice you receive; they are not a universal way to request a score on demand. If you recently applied for credit, review the paperwork and notices sent by the lender.

What if no free FICO score is offered?

You can buy a score from myFICO, which the CFPB identifies as a paid option. Purchasing a score is not necessary to obtain your free credit reports. If a paid score page offers identity protection or monitoring, those add-ons are optional; you are not required to buy them to receive the score.

Report versus score: a practical comparison

Other educational score Financial-account dashboard or consumer service Scoring brand/model and bureau data It may differ considerably from a lender’s score

Purchased FICO score myFICO Product, bureau, FICO version, price and recurring terms Costs money; monitoring or protection extras may be offered separately

Does checking your own credit hurt your score?

No. The CFPB states: “Checking your own credit report is not an inquiry about new credit, so it has no effect on your score.” That is a soft check, not a hard inquiry made when a lender evaluates a new application. You can retrieve and review your own reports without reducing your score.

A hard inquiry can occur when you apply for a credit card, loan, mortgage or other credit product and authorize the lender to review your file. Keep the two activities separate: downloading your own report is safe, while submitting multiple new-credit applications can create inquiries and may affect scoring.

How to compare a free score with a lender’s score

Match the bureau

Equifax, Experian and TransUnion may receive different account updates or report different dates. A score based on one bureau cannot be assumed to represent the other two.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the model and version

FICO has multiple versions for different lending decisions. A score shown with no model name is not enough for a precise comparison. If you are preparing for a mortgage, auto loan or other specific application, ask the lender which bureau and scoring model it expects to use.

Match the timing

Balances and payment status can change when lenders report, often around statement dates. A score calculated last month may not reflect a recently paid balance or newly reported late payment.

Treat educational scores as directional

The CFPB explains that an educational score can differ considerably from a score used by a lender for some consumers. It remains useful for watching trends and spotting an unexpected drop, but it is not a promise of approval or of the exact number a lender will see.

How to inspect each report for errors

Do not stop at the score or the first page. Work through the report systematically:

  • Identity details: Check your name, Social Security-number fragments, addresses and employers for information that is not yours.
  • Accounts: Confirm every credit card, loan, collection account and authorized-user entry. Look for accounts you never opened.
  • Payment history: Check each month’s status, especially any 30-, 60- or 90-day late mark.
  • Balances and limits: Compare reported balances and credit limits with recent statements. A high reported balance can affect a score even when you pay it in full later.
  • Account status: Make sure a closed account is not shown as open and that ownership, dates and responsibility are accurate.
  • Duplicates: A collection or account listed twice can make your debt appear larger than it is.
  • Inquiries: Identify hard inquiries you do not recognize and distinguish them from your own soft access.

How to dispute an inaccurate item

CFPB guidance says to contact both parties: the credit-reporting company that displays the error and the company that supplied the information, often called the furnisher. Send a clear explanation of what is wrong and include supporting documents.

  1. Make a copy or screenshot of the disputed report section and note the bureau, account number (using only the portion needed for identification) and date.
  2. Gather evidence such as statements, payment confirmations, account-closure letters, identity-theft records or correspondence from the creditor.
  3. Submit a dispute to the bureau using its stated dispute process, describing the exact field that is inaccurate.
  4. Send the same explanation and evidence to the furnisher, such as the card issuer, lender or collection company.
  5. Keep copies of everything you submit and watch for the investigation results and an updated report.

Dispute only information you genuinely believe is inaccurate. A correct negative entry is not required to be removed simply because it lowers a score.

Safety and subscription traps

Use the exact official address

Type AnnualCreditReport.com yourself and check the spelling before entering personal information. A search result or “free score” advertisement can lead to a different service with a trial or recurring fee.

Read the price after the trial

CFPB consumer guidance warns that some free-score offers are tied to monitoring subscriptions or trials that later become paid. Before submitting payment details, find the renewal price, billing frequency, cancellation method and the precise product being offered.

Do not buy unnecessary extras

You do not have to purchase credit protection or identity monitoring to obtain a score, and you never need to buy a product to request the free reports available through the official route.

A practical schedule for checking your credit

Routine monitoring

Use the weekly online availability to review one bureau at a time. Rotate bureaus on a schedule that you can maintain, and save the access date so you know which report is newest.

Before a major application

Several weeks before applying, pull all three reports, correct errors and check the date and model of any score supplied by your financial institution. Ask the prospective lender which bureau and model matter for the product; then treat your free score as an indicator rather than a guaranteed underwriting result.

After suspected identity theft

Request all three reports promptly, inspect unfamiliar accounts and inquiries, and document every discrepancy before contacting the bureaus and furnishers. More frequent checks can help you see whether reported information changes after a dispute.

What to remember about free access in 2026

  • AnnualCreditReport.com is the official starting point for free Equifax, Experian and TransUnion reports.
  • Online reports are currently available weekly, according to CFPB guidance; up to six Equifax reports per 12 months is stated as available through December 2026 and may change afterward.
  • A report and a FICO score are different products. Never assume a free report contains a score.
  • Your bank, card issuer or lender may provide a FICO score, but confirm the bureau, model, date and eligibility.
  • Educational scores can differ from lender scores, so ask the lender what it uses when a specific application matters.
  • Checking your own report does not lower your score, while a lender’s hard inquiry for a new application is a different event.
