Forex and cryptocurrency are not one merged market, but they are increasingly linked. The clearest connection is dollar-pegged stablecoins: demand for them can affect the cost of accessing dollars, local exchange rates and FX funding conditions through intermediaries active in both digital-asset and traditional markets.
What the fusion of forex and cryptocurrency actually means
“Fusion” describes growing connections between distinct markets, not a single exchange or a unified asset class. Traditional foreign exchange (FX) trades currencies and includes spot transactions and derivatives. Crypto includes unbacked crypto-assets, stablecoins and decentralized finance (DeFi), which are related but not interchangeable categories.

A dollar-pegged stablecoin can provide another route to dollar exposure. When demand shifts, the resulting price and funding changes may reach conventional FX through firms that operate across both markets. That is a narrower and more concrete link than saying that cryptocurrencies generally act like fiat currencies.
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) page for an IMF working paper quotes its authors: “Stablecoin activity does not stay confined to the crypto ecosystem.” This is the authors’ description of the spillover mechanism they study, not a claim that every crypto asset or market affects FX in the same way. What the evidence says about stablecoin spillovers
An IMF working paper by Iñaki Aldasoro, Paula Beltran and Federico Grinberg, published March 27, 2026, studies four USD-pegged stablecoins and 27 fiat currencies. Using data from 64 exchanges over 2021–2025, the authors examine deviations between the cost of obtaining dollar exposure through stablecoins and through traditional spot FX. IMF Working Paper No. 2026/056 BIS study coverage and mechanism
The paper reports that a 1% exogenous increase in net stablecoin inflows raises these parity deviations by 40 basis points, depreciates the local currency and widens dollar premiums in synthetic funding markets. These are estimates for the paper’s selected stablecoins, currencies, exchanges and study period—not a forecast for every country, stablecoin or FX pair.

To identify the relationship, the authors use an instrumental-variable approach based on idiosyncratic shocks to stablecoin inflows in other currencies. That method is intended to isolate changes in inflows that help explain the measured spillovers; it does not establish that all crypto activity causes changes across the entire FX market.
How a stablecoin price gap can reach FX markets
Different routes to dollar exposure can diverge
In some markets, a user or intermediary can obtain dollar exposure through either a stablecoin or conventional spot FX. Frictions between these routes can leave their implied prices out of line. The paper calls the resulting difference a parity deviation.

Intermediaries connect the markets
Firms active in both markets may respond to stablecoin inflows by changing positions across digital-asset and conventional FX venues. Their balance sheets are finite, and arbitrage—the trading that would otherwise close a price gap—can be constrained by market segmentation, funding costs or limited capacity. The study finds stronger effects when intermediary balance sheets are already stretched.
Local currencies and funding costs may feel the pressure
The authors report greater exposure among emerging-market currencies, where parity deviations are larger and arbitrage is weaker. In a counterfactual, halving cross-market frictions would reduce covered-interest-parity spillovers by roughly half and exchange-rate effects by nearly one-third. These are the paper’s model-based counterfactual estimates, not guaranteed outcomes of a policy change. BIS discussion of the study’s mechanism

Forex and crypto-linked currency access are structurally different
Traditional FX is decentralized and includes spot trading as well as forwards, FX swaps, currency swaps and options. These instruments can serve hedging, funding and speculative purposes. The IMF reported average daily FX turnover exceeding $9.6 trillion in its October 2025 Global Financial Stability Report. IMF Global Financial Stability Report, October 2025
Crypto-linked currency access varies by asset and venue. A stablecoin is not the same instrument as an unbacked crypto-asset; an exchange is not the same venue as an on-chain protocol; and custody and settlement arrangements can differ. When comparing a route into currency exposure, examine the instrument, venue and intermediaries, price formation and liquidity, settlement and custody, leverage and funding, and the relevant jurisdiction and oversight. The sources do not establish a consumer product comparison or a trading recommendation.

The BIS describes crypto-assets and DeFi as raising financial-stability considerations, including information asymmetries, market inefficiencies and cryptoisation risks in emerging markets. Its publication states that its views are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the BIS or its member central banks. BIS, “Cryptocurrencies and decentralised finance: functions and financial stability implications”
Why the impact differs by country
Stablecoin effects depend on the country’s macroeconomic framework, existing currency substitution, market structure and availability of local-currency stablecoins. A country where residents already hold substantial foreign-currency assets may face different dynamics from one where stablecoins expand access to foreign currency for new users.
The IMF’s August 7, 2026 remarks on emerging markets identify policy concerns that include foreign-currency substitution, capital-flow-management measures, data collection, domestic credit and supervision of exchanges, ramps, custodians and payment platforms. The practical questions are who converts and holds the assets, whether the activity substitutes for existing foreign-currency holdings or expands access, and whether local rules reach on-ramps, off-ramps and on-chain conversion points. The IMF cautions against treating these circumstances as identical across countries. IMF remarks, “Stablecoins: Promise, Risks, and Policy Choices for Emerging Markets”

The Financial Stability Board’s October 2025 review found progress in implementing its global crypto-asset and stablecoin framework, but also continuing gaps and inconsistencies across jurisdictions. In practice, the regulatory picture depends on where an activity takes place and which firms—such as exchanges, custodians or payment platforms—handle it. A global, uniform regime should not be assumed. Financial Stability Board, “Crypto-assets and Global Stablecoins”
