The authors report no aggregation over 96 hours under stress-aging conditions. That is a promising formulation result—not evidence of a marketed medicine, proven benefit in people, or a validated period for storing insulin outside refrigeration.
Does cone-snail venom contain insulin?
Yes. In 2015, Helena Safavi-Hemami and colleagues reported that fish-hunting Conus geographus and Conus tulipa produce specialized insulin as a major venom component. The venom insulin resembles fish insulin more closely than the snails’ own molluscan insulin. When injected into fish, it can trigger dangerously low blood glucose, which the authors proposed may help the snails capture prey by making fish less able to escape. The 2015 study describes the ecological discovery; it does not suggest that cone-snail venom is a treatment.

What feature of the venom insulin inspired drug design?
Some cone-snail venom insulins activate vertebrate insulin receptors, including the human receptor, despite lacking part of the insulin B chain. In human insulin, the B-chain C-terminal segment contributes to receptor interaction and helps insulin molecules associate into larger assemblies. The snail molecules showed that receptor activity could be retained without that segment, offering a structural clue for designing smaller, fast-acting insulin analogs. Receptor and animal-model findings are preclinical: they do not establish safety or effectiveness in people. A 2019 study examined cone-snail venom insulins as ligands of vertebrate insulin receptors.
How did researchers turn that clue into engineered insulin?
Researchers used features of the venom molecules as a design principle, creating humanized analogs rather than proposing venom itself as medicine. The studies differ in what they tested:

| Example | What was engineered or studied | Evidence described |
|---|---|---|
| Mini-Ins (2020) | A structurally minimized, monomeric human insulin analog based on cone-snail venom-insulin principles. | The paper reports receptor affinity similar to human insulin, similar in vitro signaling, and similar in vivo bioactivity. 2020 study |
| Humanized venom-insulin analog (2022) | A fully active analog with an elongated A chain and truncated B chain. | The study used structural and engineering methods to examine receptor interactions. 2022 study |
| HALQ with BN-Inu (2026) | A monomeric humanized analog formulated with an inulin-based stabilizing excipient. | The authors report no aggregation over 96 hours under stress-aging conditions. 2026 study |
These are stages of experimental work, not competing products or head-to-head treatment options. In particular, the earlier analog studies help explain the design lineage, while the HALQ result concerns a formulation that combines an engineered molecule with an excipient.
What does the HALQ thermal-stability result establish?
The reported endpoint is aggregation resistance in a defined stress-aging test: the study says the HALQ formulation showed no aggregation during a 96-hour test window. The authors characterize the formulation as not requiring cold storage, but the accessible result does not establish the test’s exact temperature or full protocol. Without those details, the 96-hour finding cannot be translated into a general room-temperature storage claim.

- [TSA Approved]The 150g reusable ice pack meets TSA requirements. Simply freeze it for 6–8 hours, and you can pass security smoothly and take your insulin travel case on the plane. It saves you from unnecessary hassles and adds more convenience to your journey
- [Best Insulation] The insulin travel case is made of EVA patch outer layer and aluminized film inner layer, which can effectively protect your medication and keep it cold for a long time
- [Good Traveling Companion] Diabetes travel case with thoughtful carry handle design, both practical and beautiful. Perfect for diabetes care during business trips, camping and other long-distance travel activities
- [Great Cooling Effect] This travel medicine kit has 2 latex-free ice packs, each weighing 150 grams, which can stay cool for 8-10 hours after 10 hours of freezing and can be reused
Three ideas should not be conflated:
- Molecular thermal stability: whether an insulin molecule retains its structure or activity as temperature changes.
- Formulation aggregation resistance: whether molecules in a particular formulation clump under specified test conditions. This is the endpoint described for HALQ and BN-Inu.
- Finished-product storage stability: validated storage limits and expiration dating for a manufactured medicine, supported by testing relevant to its packaging, distribution, and intended use.
The reported stress-test result is not, by itself, a validated shelf life or patient-use instruction. It also does not establish how the formulation performs through real-world transport or repeated handling.

Is this insulin available or proven for people?
The cited work describes biochemical, receptor, structural, animal-model, and formulation studies. These sources do not establish human trial outcomes, regulatory approval, or commercial availability for HALQ, BN-Inu, or the earlier engineered analogs. Anyone using insulin should continue to follow the storage instructions for their prescribed product; an experimental formulation result is not a reason to change those instructions.
