Final Fantasy Resonance producer Keisuke Nakashima says the game’s combat began with a specific experiment: combine the job system of Final Fantasy V with the individual character traits of Final Fantasy VI. The result is designed to let players customize who can use which abilities without making the cast feel interchangeable.
What did the developers mean by combining FFV and FFVI?
Nakashima described the starting point in a Kotaku interview published October 2, 2026: “The first concept we had in mind, simply put, is what if we take the job system from Final Fantasy 5 and the unique characteristics of each character in Final Fantasy 6, what would that look like?” He called the idea an experiment requiring “a bit of research and innovation.”

That is the producer’s shorthand for the design goal, not a claim that Resonance reproduces either older game’s combat system. The available developer comments do not provide a detailed, like-for-like comparison with the full mechanics of Final Fantasy V or Final Fantasy VI.

Visions are job-like equipment. Each one gives its equipped character access to associated abilities, while the character retains personal abilities and traits. Nakashima gave a concrete example in AUTOMATON WEST’s June 10, 2026 interview: equip Cloud’s Vision on another character and that character can use Cross-Slash.

The intended trade-off is flexibility without erasing identity. Players can choose favorite characters and pair them with abilities that suit a situation, while the developers say characters keep recognizable moves and individual personalities. The team says it rebuilt abilities for Resonance’s combat context and aimed to give all 26 characters appearing in the game a useful battlefield role, rather than leaving particular characters weaker or harder to use.
Where does stagger fit into the experiment?
Nakashima said the team also reconsidered the stagger system. A September 3, 2026 hands-on preview from RPGFan describes one version of the combat loop: enemies have visible HP and stagger bars, and attacks against weaknesses reduce stagger. Staggering an enemy opens follow-up opportunities that can lead to a Vision-based Resonance Attack.

That account reflects RPGFan’s limited preview session, not a complete evaluation of the game. It offers a glimpse of how character abilities, Vision skills, weakness targeting and stagger can connect, but it does not establish the balance or quality of the full combat system.
What is—and isn’t—established about the design?
Nakashima’s description makes the design tension clear: allow meaningful party and ability customization while keeping characters distinct. In his words, the system formed into “these distinct characteristics” alongside “that additional customization element.” The sources describe the developers’ aims and a preview of combat in action; they do not prove how well the full game delivers on those aims.

Release-date reports also conflict. Kotaku’s October 2 interview lists October 22, 2026, while Nintendo Wire’s September 17, 2026 interview lists October 17, 2026. Neither report resolves the discrepancy, so check Square Enix or the relevant platform storefront for the current date rather than treating either as definitive.
