Dan Houser says he has not watched Netflix’s Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look and plans to avoid it because he does not want other creators’ work to distract or disrupt him creatively. The former Rockstar Games creative president also explained that open-world games make him analyze how they were built instead of simply playing them.
Why is Dan Houser avoiding the GTA 6 feature?
In Kotaku’s October 2, 2026 account of a Variety podcast interview, Houser said, “I haven’t seen it yet,” and added, “I will try and avoid it because I always try and avoid stuff that’s going to distract or disrupt me creatively.”

He said he spends much of his time making open-world games and thinking about innovative ways to market them. Watching what other teams do can invite comparison, while playing their games can turn into an analysis of their decisions: “I find when I play them, I can almost deconstruct the strengths and weaknesses of the team in real time, and it’s distracting.”

What is the GTA 6 Netflix reveal?
Netflix’s official title for the feature is Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. Netflix announced it on August 27, 2026, describing it as a feature captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. Its listing gives the runtime as 27 minutes. Netflix’s announcement called it an “Extended Look”; some secondary coverage describes it as a gameplay reveal.
Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg said the company was “honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first.” Despite that first release, the feature was not limited to Netflix: PC Gamer reported on August 28 that it had appeared on YouTube after a six-hour delay. PC Gamer’s report described it as 26 minutes; Netflix’s own listing says 27 minutes.

Where can you watch it?
The feature premiered on Netflix and was later posted to YouTube, according to PC Gamer’s August 28, 2026 report. The available details establish those two viewing options, but do not establish whether the YouTube upload remains available in every region or at all times.
What else did Houser say about his work?
Houser co-founded Rockstar Games with his brother Sam, helped write and produce every Grand Theft Auto game and Red Dead Redemption 2, served as president of creative, and left the company in 2020, according to Kotaku. He is now developing several multimedia franchises through Absurd Ventures, founded in 2023. The company has released audio dramas, comic books, and novels, and is developing two games.

He described one game as an open-world comedy focused on comedy and character memory. The other, he said, is a dystopian science-fiction story about a video-game development gone wrong and a rogue AI. These are descriptions of projects, not announced game titles or confirmed release plans. Kotaku’s report also says Netflix’s August announcement listed GTA VI as available for preorder on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date; those are details from that dated announcement and may change.
