There is no single guaranteed depth for buried treasure in Minecraft. The chest is covered by the terrain where it generates: beach chests are often under sand or gravel, while underwater or varied terrain may leave stone or other blocks above it. The red X shows the search area, not the chest’s vertical position.
Why buried treasure has no fixed depth
The available reference describes the blocks that may cover a chest, but does not establish a guaranteed number of blocks from the surface or a specific Y-level. The amount you need to dig therefore depends on the terrain above the chest. A shallow-looking spot may still involve several layers, and a beach, underwater location, or other generated terrain can have different cover.

Beach and land terrain
Sand and gravel are common covers for beach treasure. Clear the surface at the X and work down through the layers you encounter rather than relying on a fixed depth.
Underwater or varied terrain
Stone or other generated blocks can cover treasure in underwater and varied terrain. If you reach a harder layer, inspect it and the surrounding blocks instead of assuming the chest must be directly beneath the first shaft.

How to find the chest at the map’s X
- Use the buried-treasure map to travel to the marked area. Microsoft Learn documents the
exploration_mapfunction as supporting theburiedtreasuredestination; it describes the function as transforming a normal map into a treasure map that marks hidden treasure. - Center your initial search on the red X and clear the surface.
- Dig down while checking nearby blocks and each terrain layer. Do not treat a particular number of blocks as a guaranteed depth.
- If a straight shaft finds nothing, widen the hole and search adjacent blocks and nearby terrain around the X. This is practical search advice, not a guarantee that the chest lies within a particular radius.
Java and Bedrock coordinates: horizontal position, not depth
A secondary wiki reference reports that buried treasure is placed at chunk coordinates 9,9 in Java Edition and 8,8 in Bedrock Edition. These are horizontal chunk positions that may help pinpoint where to search; they are not a surface-to-chest measurement or a Y-level. They do not establish how far down the chest sits.
What if there is no chest?
A Mojang bug-tracker report describes a generation case in which treasure did not appear without suitable stone beneath the generation position. That is a reported edge case, not evidence that missing chests are routine or that treasure always generates near a particular depth. If careful searching around the X turns up nothing, terrain generation may be involved.
