For common copper Ethernet, 100 m (328 ft) is a typical maximum channel reach, but the supported speed depends on the Ethernet standard, cable category, ports, and installation. For example, 10GBASE-T reaches up to 55 m on Cat6 and up to 100 m on Cat6A in Cisco’s guidance. These are design limits, not a promise that every installation will achieve the stated speed.
What the 100 m Ethernet limit means
Cisco says 802.3 channel requirements typically limit cable reach to 100 m, while warning that other factors can shorten it. The figure describes a channel, not necessarily just the cable hidden in a wall: include the installed run and patch cables as applicable to the equipment guidance. A long run may therefore be outside a given speed’s supported reach before it reaches 100 m.

There is also no universal rule that an overlength cable automatically switches to one particular slower speed. The sources describe supported reach, not the link rate a specific pair of devices will negotiate. That depends on the devices and the actual cable installation.
Ethernet speed and reach by cable category
The figures below are from Cisco guidance for the named switch families. They show documented reach examples, not a guarantee for every cable, port, or installation.

| Link speed | Cable category | Documented reach | Guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps | Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 | Up to 100 m | Cisco Catalyst 3650 installation guide |
| 2.5 Gbps | Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A | Up to 100 m | Cisco Catalyst 3650 installation guide |
| 5 Gbps | Cat5e | Up to 70 m | Cisco Catalyst 3650 installation guide |
| 5 Gbps | Cat6 or Cat6A | Up to 100 m | Cisco Catalyst 3650 installation guide |
| 10 Gbps (10GBASE-T) | Cat6 | Up to 55 m | Cisco Catalyst 9200 guide; also listed in Intel’s Ethernet cable guide |
| 10 Gbps (10GBASE-T) | Cat6A | Up to 100 m | Cisco Catalyst 9200 guide |
The Cisco Catalyst 3650 values apply to that guide’s switch installation guidance. The 10GBASE-T figures come from Cisco’s Catalyst 9200 documentation; Intel independently lists 55 m for 10GBASE-T over Cat6. Check the documentation for your own equipment when planning a run.
Choosing a cable for the distance and speed you need
For 10 Gbps over more than 55 m
For a copper channel intended to carry 10GBASE-T over a distance longer than 55 m and up to 100 m, Cisco specifies Cat6A reach. A Cat6 cable should not be treated as a 100 m 10 Gbps solution on the basis of the cited guidance.

- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
For 2.5 or 5 Gbps
The Catalyst 3650 guide lists 2.5 Gbps up to 100 m on Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A. For 5 Gbps, it lists Cat5e up to 70 m and Cat6 or Cat6A up to 100 m. These limits are specific to the cited guidance; confirm the supported category and distance for the switches or other equipment at both ends.

For 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps
The same Catalyst 3650 guide lists up to 100 m on Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 for 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps. The channel still needs to be installed and terminated correctly, and both ports must support the intended link rate.

Why a cable may underperform before its stated limit
Cable category is only one part of the channel. Cisco identifies factors that can shorten reach, including cable bundling and termination quality. A damaged cable, poor connector, or installation that differs from the equipment guidance can prevent a run from meeting its expected performance. The 100 m figure is therefore a typical channel limit, not a guarantee for every installation.

How to check whether cable length is the problem
- Check the negotiated link rate. Review the operating system or switch interface status and see whether the connection is running at 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps, or 10 Gbps. The source guidance does not specify a particular device menu path.
- Confirm the ports’ capabilities. Verify that both connected Ethernet ports support the speed you expect; cable reach guidance cannot make a slower port operate faster.
- Estimate the full channel length. Include the permanent run and patch cables where applicable, then compare the total with the relevant speed-and-category reach in the table.
- Inspect the cable and terminations. Look for damage and poorly seated or terminated connectors. Cable category printed on a jacket does not establish that the installed channel is correctly terminated.
- Consider bundling and test the run if needed. If the channel appears to meet the documented reach but performance remains below expectation, installation conditions may be involved. An Ethernet cable tester can identify some wiring faults; certification testing can assess whether a channel meets specified performance requirements.
