The Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 is the strongest fit in the available evidence for a photo-focused all-in-one: it prints, scans and copies, uses six refillable ink colors, and supports borderless photo output up to 8.5 by 11 inches in the U.S. listing. If you prefer a cartridge-based home-office model, the Canon PIXMA TR7820 is a documented alternative with photo printing, scanning, copying and automatic two-sided printing. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish which produces better-looking prints, so choose by print size, ink approach, media support and the document features you need.
Which all-in-one photo printer should you choose?
For a household that prints photos regularly and also needs an everyday scanner and copier, start with the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500. Epson lists a six-color refillable ink system, print/scan/copy functions and borderless printing up to 8.5 by 11 inches in the U.S. It is a feature-based recommendation, not a claim that it beats other printers in a print-quality test.

Canon lists borderless printing for supported sizes including 4-by-6, 5-by-7, 8-by-10 inches and letter/A4. Paper formats and listings vary by market.

Ink system and how often you print
The ET-8500 has refillable tanks and six colors of Claria ET Premium ink. That arrangement may suit frequent printing, but it does not by itself prove lower total ownership cost: compare the local printer price, replacement ink, photo paper and your likely print volume. A cartridge-based printer may be a simpler fit if you print occasionally; actual cost depends on ink prices, coverage, settings and paper.
Epson estimates that the ET-8500 can print 4-by-6-inch photos for about 4 cents each, compared with 40 cents using traditional ink cartridges. This is Epson’s manufacturer comparison, not an independently verified or universal per-print cost; check the product page’s assumptions and your local consumable prices before relying on it. Epson Europe also claims up to 2,300 photos from the included ink bottles. That is a manufacturer yield claim, not a guaranteed result for every user or print.

Photo paper and specialty media
Epson says the ET-8500 supports specialty media up to 1.3 mm thick and printing on selected CDs and DVDs. Its European listing describes photo and A4 trays plus two rear feeds. Canon lists several Canon photo papers and selected non-Canon media. Confirm the exact paper type, dimensions and thickness in the specifications for the model sold where you live before purchasing media.

Both the ET-8500 and TR7820 list printing, scanning and copying; their product information also describes automatic two-sided printing. The cited pages do not establish that either includes an automatic document feeder, so do not assume that multi-page scanning or copying is hands-free. Check the model’s detailed specifications if that workflow matters.

When a dedicated photo printer makes more sense
If your priority is larger prints rather than an all-in-one, a dedicated photo printer may offer formats beyond the typical home-office range. Digital Camera World’s buying guide describes Epson’s ET-8550 as a larger-format refillable model with a scanner, while noting that other models in its guide do not include scanners. Treat those as category alternatives, not direct substitutes: verify the print size you need and whether scanning and copying are included. See Digital Camera World’s photo-printer guide for context.

A practical buying checklist
- Write down the largest photo size you expect to print and whether it must be borderless.
- Decide whether refillable tanks suit your expected volume better than cartridges; estimate total cost using local prices for ink and paper rather than a single advertised figure.
- Check support for the photo paper, cardstock or other specialty media you plan to use.
- Confirm scan and copy functions, and verify whether an automatic document feeder is present if you handle multi-page documents.
- Check the local model’s connectivity, mobile app and operating-system support, along with current availability and price.
