Under the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), signs mark where a posted limit changes; another sign at the downstream end of a speed-limit section shows the next limit; and additional signs go beyond major intersections or wherever needed to remind drivers. The MUTCD does not set a general every-mile or other fixed repeat-sign interval. State and local rules can add requirements, so a specific road’s jurisdiction matters.
What the MUTCD requires
Section 2B.21 of the MUTCD sets placement conditions, not a universal distance between signs. It says: “Speed Limit (R2-1) signs, indicating speed limits for which posting is required by law, shall be located at the points of change from one speed limit to another.” The MUTCD, 11th Edition with Revision 1, also calls for a sign at the downstream end of a speed-limit section showing the next limit, plus additional signs beyond major intersections and elsewhere when needed as reminders.

- At a zone change: the sign marks where a different posted speed limit begins.
- At the downstream end: a sign displays the next speed limit.
- Beyond major intersections or where a reminder is needed: the agency may install additional signs based on the road and driving context.
Those triggers do not translate into a standard spacing such as every half-mile. Sign placement is not governed by a blanket repeat interval in the federal manual.
Why the answer can differ by state and road
The MUTCD establishes national traffic-control-device standards, but state and local agencies set speed limits under their authority. A state may adopt its own manual or supplement, and local road authorities may have additional requirements. FHWA identifies the MUTCD 11th Edition with Revision 1, dated December 2025, as the current national edition. For example, Caltrans says the California MUTCD 2026 took effect January 18, 2026, and is in substantial conformance with the 2023 national MUTCD.

Road context can also affect whether reminder signs are useful. FHWA lists factors considered in speed studies such as road type and features, traffic volume and motorist speeds, road setting, intersection and driveway spacing, sight distance, parking, pedestrian and bicyclist activity, crash history, and pavement condition. These are relevant to speed-limit decisions and roadway context; they are not a formula for calculating sign-to-sign distance.
A missing sign does not necessarily mean there is no speed limit
Statutory limits may apply even where a speed-limit sign is absent. The applicable limit depends on state law and road class, so the distance between posted signs alone does not establish the legal speed. FHWA explains that statutory limits apply without a sign and that posted limits may be adopted by a city, county, or state agency after an engineering speed study. FHWA’s Speed Limit Basics describes these distinctions.

School-zone, work-zone, variable, and advisory speeds are separate cases with their own applicable provisions. Do not assume the ordinary permanent-zone placement rules settle how signs for those situations must be placed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to check a particular road
- Identify the state and the road authority responsible for the road, such as a state department of transportation, county, or city.
- Check that jurisdiction’s current MUTCD edition, supplement, and any applicable local requirements for speed-limit signs.
- Determine whether the sign marks a limit change, identifies the next limit at a zone’s end, or serves as a reminder after an intersection or elsewhere.
- If the question is whether a sign is legally placed or a limit applies, contact the road authority or consult the relevant state law; spacing alone is not enough to decide.
This is a general U.S. explanation, not a determination about a particular sign or road. The controlling rules depend on jurisdiction and the type of speed limit involved.
