The telescope is Euclid, a European Space Agency (ESA) space mission with contributions from NASA. It will not photograph dark matter or dark energy directly. Instead, it measures how matter bends light and how galaxies are distributed across cosmic history—evidence that can help scientists constrain what these invisible components do and test explanations for what they might be.
What Euclid is designed to find out
Euclid is an operating space survey mission, launched on 1 July 2023 and stationed near the Sun–Earth L2 region, about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth. ESA says routine science observations began on 14 February 2024. Its goal is to build a three-dimensional map of the universe’s large-scale structure, observing billions of galaxies across more than a third of the sky and looking back through the past 10 billion years, as described by ESA’s mission page and its Euclid overview.

The map is not a picture of dark matter or dark energy. It is a record of observable galaxies and the patterns in their light and positions. From those patterns, cosmologists can infer how mass is distributed, how cosmic structure grew, and how the universe expanded. The mission’s NASA contributions are described by NASA’s Euclid mission page.
Can Euclid see dark matter?
Not as light: dark matter does not appear in Euclid’s images as a glowing object. Its gravity, however, affects light traveling from more distant galaxies. Euclid uses weak gravitational lensing to measure the resulting tiny, statistical distortions in galaxy shapes. The foreground matter bends the light; by mapping the pattern across many galaxies, scientists can infer where mass lies, including mass that does not emit light.

This is an indirect measurement. A lensing map traces the gravitational influence of matter; it is not a direct photograph or a complete inventory of individual dark-matter particles. ESA and the Euclid Consortium describe the method in their explanation of how Euclid explores the dark universe.
How can Euclid study dark energy?
Euclid also measures galaxy clustering: how galaxies are distributed through space rather than treating them as randomly scattered points. Their pattern preserves information about how cosmic structure formed and changed as the universe expanded. Dark energy is the name given to whatever is driving the universe’s accelerated expansion; Euclid’s observations can test how different models of expansion and structure growth fit the data.

The two probes complement one another. Lensing helps map the gravitational effects of mass, while galaxy clustering records the history of structure and expansion. Comparing them lets researchers constrain dark matter, dark energy, and possible explanations involving gravity. In plain language, Euclid studies the changing texture of the cosmic web: lensing traces the mass shaping it, and clustering shows how it developed. The web analogy is a way to explain the measurements, not a direct view of dark components.
What “reveal” means—and what it does not
Euclid could sharpen the evidence about what dark matter and dark energy are by ruling out or supporting explanations of their effects. It cannot promise a final answer simply by collecting images. The mission measures observable consequences, and scientists compare those measurements with physical and cosmological models. The cited mission descriptions do not claim that Euclid will identify the underlying physical nature of either dark component conclusively.

That distinction matters: a more precise map can narrow the possibilities without directly detecting the substance or mechanism behind them. Euclid’s scientific value lies in testing explanations against a very large, consistent survey of galaxies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Euclid is not simply a sharper Hubble
Euclid’s strength is the scale of its survey, not close-up detail on an individual galaxy. ESA’s Euclid FAQ says its smaller primary mirror means it resolves fewer fine details than Hubble, while its image quality is adequate for its own science goals. For cosmology, surveying a vast area and measuring patterns across billions of galaxies can matter more than resolving the finest features in a handful of targets.

Mission status and data releases
Euclid has been conducting routine science observations since February 2024. The Euclid Consortium and Caltech timeline, updated in August 2026, lists Quick Data Release 2 on 24 June 2026 and labels 12 November 2026 as the planned date for “Data Release 1 (DR1) Foundation.” As of 7 October 2026, that DR1 date is still in the future; release schedules can change. The same data-release timeline describes at least 6.5 years of active mission duration and six years of main survey operations after commissioning.
