Fallout 76’s current furniture-based C.A.M.P. Pets are cats and dogs that stay at your C.A.M.P.; they do not follow you into the world. Give the matching bed or doghouse clear space so the pet can spawn. Bethesda does not promise that these pets are invulnerable, so treat placement advice as practical setup—not a guarantee that a pet cannot be harmed or lost.
How do current C.A.M.P. Pets work?
Build a cat bed or doghouse from the DWELLERS category in the C.A.M.P. workshop. Leave open space around it so the pet can appear. Once spawned, the pet remains at the C.A.M.P. and follows you around the camp, not across the game world. Bethesda’s release notes put it plainly: “C.A.M.P. Pets will not follow you in the world – they are just that – a C.A.M.P. pet!” (Bethesda release notes)

Bethesda Support currently documents one active C.A.M.P. Pet at a time. You can have one pet and one ally together, but C.A.M.P. Pets are unavailable in Shelters. The pet bed or doghouse is distinct from the optional cat scratcher and dog digging/bone-mound furnishing, which are in the MISC workshop tab; pets use those items when placed. You can interact with the pet to issue commands, dress it, or edit its name. Collars are crafted at an Armor Workbench, and pets periodically bring an item through Pet Treasure. How can I keep my pet safe?
For a current furniture-based C.A.M.P. Pet, the practical guidance supported by Bethesda is to leave the pet furniture enough open space to spawn and use the support steps if it does not appear. The reviewed official guidance does not establish that a C.A.M.P. Pet is immune to damage or loss, nor does it publish a survival rate. No particular camp defense, biome, or building trick can be treated as an official guarantee on this evidence.

Older animals tamed with the Animal Friend perk have different, documented risks. Bethesda says the tamed animal walks to and guards the C.A.M.P.; it may disappear if you disconnect before it arrives. When you swap camps, the pet walks toward the newly selected camp. Bethesda warns that this trip can take a long time, the animal can be killed on the way, and camp placement may leave it stuck or falling in an unusual location. If you rely on a legacy tame, consider the route and terrain before swapping camps, and allow it to reach camp before disconnecting. (Animal Friend support; camp-swapping support)

Can my pet follow me? The three systems compared
| System | Where it stays or travels | Camp swapping | Combat or recovery | Status of guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Furniture-based C.A.M.P. Pet | Stays at your C.A.M.P.; follows you around that camp, not into the world. | Does not travel with you as a world companion. The reviewed current support article does not describe a travel mechanic for this pet. | The reviewed current support article does not describe combat or a downed state. | Current Bethesda Support documentation. |
| Animal Friend tame | Walks to and guards the C.A.M.P. | Walks toward the newly selected camp; the trip can take a long time, and the pet may be killed or get stuck. | The cited support guidance documents travel and camp-placement risks, not a combat recovery system. | Legacy taming guidance in Bethesda Support. |
| World Pets | Planned to become companions that can level and follow commands; the feature is not live as of October 4, 2026. | Not stated in the cited announcement and PTS notes. | PTS testing includes combat and a downed state; mechanics may change before launch. | Announced for December 2026; details are from Bethesda’s PTS materials. |
What changes with World Pets?
Bethesda’s September 30, 2026 director letter says World Pets are planned for December 2026. The announced feature turns C.A.M.P. Pets into companions that can level, with existing interactions carrying over and new Stay, Follow, Protect, and Kill interactions. That is a future announcement, not a description of the live furniture-based pet feature on October 4, 2026. (Bethesda Game Studios, Letter from the Directors – September 2026)

Bethesda’s September 28 PTS article describes pets entering a downed state if they take too much damage. Clearing nearby enemies can pick a pet up, but a Stimpak is still needed to restore full health. These are test mechanics, not confirmed permanent launch behavior; Bethesda warns that not all PTS content is guaranteed to ship. The same article lists issues under investigation, including ping-to-move failing at long distances, inconsistent Pet XP, help pages that may not reflect the updated XP system, and pets that can be slow to attack. It also describes Pet XP banking for up to one minute until you earn XP and a 10% extra Pet XP value on kills; those are PTS test values, not a stable live balance. (Bethesda PTS article, September 28, 2026)
The PTS notes say pets can be healed by Medic weapons, while also listing a Medical Malpractice healing issue. Because the feature is still being tested and these notes include unresolved behavior, do not rely on them for a live healing build or a guaranteed recovery method. Check live release notes after World Pets launch for final mechanics.
