Excel can connect with Outlook, Teams, and Word in four materially different ways: Office Scripts replay actions inside a workbook; Power Automate starts cross-app actions when an event occurs; Outlook can hand a selected email to a Teams chat or channel; and OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams can keep an Excel or Word file shared for simultaneous editing. The right route depends on whether you need a repeatable button, an event-driven process, a one-time message handoff, or a single collaborative document. Check your Microsoft 365 license, administrator policies, account type, and app version before following any setup.
Which Excel connection should you use?
Start with the outcome rather than the product name. Office Scripts is for repeating workbook operations. Power Automate is for a trigger followed by one or more actions across Microsoft 365. Outlook’s Share to Teams command is a manual way to move one email into a Teams conversation. A shared file in OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams is for people editing the same Excel or Word document instead of exchanging copies.

How do I repeat Excel work with Office Scripts?
Microsoft describes Office Scripts as automation for repetitive tasks in Excel for the web, Windows, and Mac. In Excel, the Action Recorder can capture actions such as entering values, formatting cells, and creating tables. You can replay the result or edit the generated TypeScript. Recording and running a basic script does not require you to write code, although code editing and Power Automate integration are available for advanced workflows.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check availability before looking for the Automate tab
- You need an eligible Microsoft 365 license; the exact entitlement depends on your organization’s plan.
- An administrator can disable Office Scripts, so a missing Automate tab may be a policy or licensing issue rather than an Excel error.
- Availability can differ by platform, tenant, and region. Do not assume that a consumer account or every installed Excel edition includes it.
- Office Scripts is a separate model from VBA. A VBA macro and an Office Script are not interchangeable.
Record a repeatable workbook routine
- Open the workbook in a supported Excel environment and select the Automate tab if it is available.
- Start the Record Actions or Action Recorder command. The label can vary with the current Excel interface.
- Perform the routine you want to repeat, such as entering a value, applying formatting, or turning a range into a table.
- Stop recording and save the resulting script with a descriptive name.
- Run the script on a test copy of the workbook. Inspect the result before using it on production data, especially if the routine changes rows, formulas, or formatting.
The recorder captures the operations you perform, not an abstract business rule. If a later workbook has different sheet names, columns, or layouts, the recorded steps may need editing. Advanced users can open the script and change its TypeScript rather than recording every variation.

Reuse a script with colleagues
Microsoft’s sharing guidance says workbook-linked scripts can be available to people who have write access to that workbook, and shared scripts are limited to the organization. A script button is therefore not merely a visual shortcut: when another person runs someone else’s script, Excel can prompt for permission to access and edit the workbook. Give colleagues the minimum workbook access they need and explain what the script changes.
When Office Scripts is the wrong route
Use Office Scripts when a person or a scheduled process needs to perform workbook operations. It is not, by itself, an event router that watches Teams or Outlook and then coordinates several services. For that pattern, use Power Automate and, where appropriate, call an Office Script as one action after confirming the required licenses and tenant policies.
Can Excel automate updates to Teams or Word?
Yes, but the cross-app pattern is normally built with Power Automate. Microsoft defines Teams workflows as a way to connect one or more apps to Teams and handle repetitive processes: Workflows let you automate repetitive tasks or processes that connect one or more apps to Teams.
See the Teams workflows overview for the current entry points.

A flow has a trigger and one or more actions. For example, a submitted Teams update can trigger an Excel row insertion, followed by an email, a Planner task, an approval request, or a Teams chat or channel message. This is different from pressing a script button: the event starts the process after the flow is enabled.

Example: write a Teams Update into Excel
Microsoft’s Teams Updates example requires a workbook containing an actual Excel table. Create column names that correspond to the fields in the update request; an arbitrary worksheet range is not a substitute for the documented Add a row into a table action.
- Store the workbook in a location the flow and its connection can reach, such as an approved OneDrive or SharePoint location.
- Open the Teams Workflows app, choose a suitable template, or start creating a workflow from scratch with Power Automate.
- Choose the Teams Updates event that should start the flow, such as a new submitted update.
- Add the Excel Add a row into a table action and select the workbook, worksheet, and prepared table.
- Map each update field to the matching table column. Keep the table headers stable; renaming or moving them can break mappings.
- Add optional follow-up actions, such as sending an email, creating a Planner task, requesting approval, or posting a Teams chat or channel message.
- Save and test with a non-sensitive update. Check both the inserted row and every notification so that a successful trigger is not mistaken for a successful downstream action.
Connector availability, authentication, and run limits depend on the account and Microsoft 365 licensing in your tenant. An administrator may also restrict connectors or workflow creation. If a connector or action is absent, check the tenant policy and the plan assigned to the account before redesigning the flow.
Do not build new flows on retired Office 365 Connectors
The Teams Updates documentation records that creation of new Office 365 Connectors was blocked beginning August 15, 2024, and existing connectors ceased to be available on October 1, 2024. Those dates describe the connector retirement, not a performance measurement. Use the current Workflows and Power Automate guidance instead, and verify that your tenant has the relevant Teams and Power Automate features enabled.
Where Word fits
Word can be part of the same information chain when the deliverable is a shared report or a generated document, but the supplied Teams Updates example specifically demonstrates writing to an Excel table and optional notifications. Do not assume that every Word action appears in every Power Automate license. Check the available Word connector actions in your environment and design the flow around the permissions and connectors your administrator permits.

How do I send an Outlook email to Teams?
Outlook’s Share to Teams command is a message-level handoff, not a general-purpose automatic workflow. On a supported version, select an email, choose Share to Teams, select a person, group, or channel, and optionally include attachments. The result is a Teams conversation containing the selected message and the options you chose.
Account and version requirements
Microsoft documents the feature for qualifying work or school accounts with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription. The help page lists New Outlook, Classic Outlook, and Outlook on the web, but the exact interface differs by version. Do not promise this command to every personal Outlook account.
Use the handoff
- Open the message in New Outlook, Classic Outlook, or Outlook on the web.
- Choose Share to Teams. If the command is not visible, confirm the account type, subscription, and version before troubleshooting the message itself.
- Choose a recipient, group, or channel.
- Decide whether to include attachments and add any context needed for the Teams audience.
- Send the share. Treat the Teams post as a new conversation item; later changes to the original email do not turn it into a synchronized Teams record.
Choose Power Automate instead when the requirement is “every time this kind of event occurs, notify Teams.” Share to Teams is useful when a person decides that one particular email should be discussed in Teams now.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould I attach an Excel or Word file, or share a link?
Excel and Word can send a document through Outlook as an attachment, but an attachment is a separate copy. For ongoing collaboration, store the file in OneDrive, SharePoint, or a Teams-backed shared location and send a link with suitable permissions. Microsoft explains these approaches in Email a document from Microsoft Office, Work together on Office documents, and Co-author Office files.

Attachment: a deliberate snapshot
- The recipient receives the file as it existed when you sent it.
- Each recipient can edit a different copy, creating competing versions.
- For the relevant desktop workflow, Outlook must be installed and configured as the default mail app.
Cloud link: one working document
- Collaborators open the same file and can coauthor when their Office apps, account permissions, and storage location support it.
- Updates to the shared Excel workbook or Word report remain in one place instead of requiring you to reconcile emailed files.
- Link permissions matter: choose who can view or edit, and avoid granting broader access than the project requires.
- A Teams channel file is stored in the team’s shared document location; OneDrive and SharePoint links follow the permissions of those services.
A practical Excel–Word–Teams pattern
Keep the working Excel data and the Word report in an approved cloud location, share their links in the relevant Teams conversation, and use Power Automate only for events that genuinely need notification or a recorded row. This keeps discussion in Teams, data in Excel, and the report in Word without creating a new attachment every time someone makes a change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose by trigger, scope, and maintenance
| Question | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Does a person need to repeat the same workbook steps? | Office Scripts | It records and replays workbook actions and can be edited as TypeScript. |
| Should a submission or other event start several actions? | Power Automate | It can write to an Excel table and continue with email, Planner, approvals, or Teams posts. |
| Does one selected email need immediate discussion in Teams? | Outlook Share to Teams | It is a manual handoff designed for a message, person, group, or channel. |
| Do several people need to edit the same report or workbook? | OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams shared file | A permissioned link preserves one working copy and supports coauthoring. |
Also compare maintenance. A recorded script is maintained with the workbook. A flow depends on triggers, connectors, credentials, table schemas, and tenant policy. Share to Teams depends on a supported Outlook account and version. A shared file depends on storage permissions and coauthoring support. These dependencies should be documented with the process so that a staff change or license change does not silently stop the workflow.
Common failures and precise fixes
The Automate tab or script recorder is missing
Check the Excel platform, the Microsoft 365 license, administrator settings, and regional or tenant availability. Do not substitute VBA instructions for Office Scripts instructions; they are different automation systems.
The flow cannot add a row
Confirm that the workbook contains a named Excel table, not just formatted cells. Recheck the selected workbook, worksheet, and table, then verify that the flow connection has permission to the storage location and that every mapped column still exists.
Best Value
A Teams workflow trigger runs but later actions fail
Inspect each action’s connection and permissions separately. A successful Teams trigger does not prove that the Excel, email, Planner, approval, or posting action is authorized. Ask the administrator whether connector policies or licensing restrict the missing action.
Share to Teams is unavailable in Outlook
Verify that you are signed in with a qualifying work or school account and that your Outlook edition is New Outlook, Classic Outlook, or Outlook on the web as documented by Microsoft. If the account is personal or the subscription is not eligible, the command may not be offered.
People are editing different versions
Stop sending new attachments for the working draft. Move the authoritative Excel or Word file to OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams, set the intended permissions, and send that link. Keep an attachment only when a fixed snapshot is the desired result.
Quick Recap
A safe rollout checklist
- Identify whether the requirement is replay, event-driven automation, message handoff, or coauthoring.
- Confirm account type, Microsoft 365 license, administrator policy, app version, and storage permissions.
- For Power Automate, create and test the Excel table before mapping fields.
- Use test data and a non-production Teams destination before enabling notifications.
- Document who owns the script or flow, what it changes, and which connections it uses.
- Review permissions for shared scripts, workbooks, Word reports, and Teams links.
- Recheck workflows after tenant policy, connector, or Office version changes.
