How Everyday People Can Buy Back Time With Three Practical Strategies

Buying back time can mean using technology or paying for help to reduce routine work. Learn how to judge the cost, handoff, and actual relief.

You can sometimes reclaim time by spending money or using simple technology to reduce routine work—but only when the task truly leaves your plate and the total cost makes sense. The episode TPS633 from The Productivity Show frames the idea around technology fixes, delegation and a restaurant-reservation tactic. Its accessible notes outline topics rather than the hosts’ exact methods, so the practical steps below are a decision framework, not a transcript of the episode.

What it means to buy back time

Buying back time means trading money or a small change in how you work for less routine effort. It is not automatically worthwhile: the task must be removed or reduced, and the time and attention recovered should be worth more to you than the full cost.

The episode’s notes open with the question, “How much would you pay to never stand in a grocery line again?” That captures the trade-off, but the notes provide no current grocery-service prices, local availability, or promised time savings. For an errand, count more than the listed price: include service fees, tips, substitutions, travel avoided, and the time spent placing and managing an order.

Strategy 1: Use technology to remove coordination and repetition

A modest technology change can be useful when it reduces back-and-forth or makes a recurring task easier to complete. The episode notes include chapter descriptions about an app helping coordinate a soccer team and about technology fixes; they do not identify a specific procedure or establish an outcome.

  • ✔This daily plan pad features detailed hourly schedule timelines from 12 AM to 11 PM, perfectly segment your morning, afternoon and evening hours. Track meetings, appointments and fixed tasks hour by hour to eliminate procrastination and boost your daily time management efficiency.
  • ✔ 1.Put an end to the time black hole: Every hour of activity is recorded, so you always know where your time goes and bid farewell to "being busy yet achieving nothing". 2.Cure procrastination: Visual time grids have an inherent sense of supervision; blank time slots serve as a direct reminder, with more binding power than phone alerts. 3.Gain instant a sense of accomplishment: Check off completed tasks with a simple tick. A filled time axis page by page delivers physical feedback that digital tools cannot match, making it easier to keep going the more you use it.
  • ✔ 1.Students & Exam Takers: Plan class, review and practice time; allocate study hours for each subject precisely for targeted exam preparation. 2.Professionals: Schedule meetings, work projects and commute time; prioritize tasks clearly and bid farewell to chaotic overtime. 3.Freelancers & Stay-at-Home Parents: Clearly divide work/childcare/personal time to avoid blurring the boundaries between life and work. 4.Self-Discipline Enthusiasts: Check in on fitness, reading and learning; develop regular routines with hourly scales to build good habits effortlessly.

Look for a task with repeated friction

  • Notice recurring work that involves chasing updates, collecting availability, sending reminders, or copying the same information between places.
  • Try a simple tool or feature that addresses that specific friction rather than adopting a larger system by default.
  • Check whether setup, notifications, maintenance, and explaining the tool to others take less effort than the task it replaces.

A tool has not bought back time if it adds a new stream of administration. Keep the change only if it reduces the whole job, including coordination and upkeep.

Strategy 2: Delegate a task with a clear handoff

Delegation can free time, but it is often difficult to hand off tasks you are good at or accustomed to controlling. The episode notes flag that challenge, mention vacation planning as an example, and refer to a budget trick without specifying what it is. They also identify waiting too long to get help as a topic. No particular spending threshold or budgeting formula is established in the accessible notes.

Choose the first task carefully

  1. Pick a bounded task with a recognizable finish, such as gathering vacation options or handling a defined household errand.
  2. Write down the result you need, the deadline, any constraints, and what the helper may decide without checking back.
  3. Include the cost of explaining, reviewing, and correcting the work when deciding whether the handoff is worthwhile.
  4. Afterward, check whether the task actually left your plate. If you still had to manage every detail, narrow or clarify the handoff before delegating it again.

Start with a task where a reasonable result is more valuable than doing every step yourself. For sensitive work, consider what information or access the helper would need before sharing it.

Strategy 3: Choose on-demand help or ongoing assistance based on the work

The episode notes raise a comparison between on-demand services and a dedicated assistant, but do not state the hosts’ criteria or a specific recommendation. As a practical decision framework, compare the following:

Consideration On-demand help Dedicated assistant
Work pattern Often a better fit to evaluate for isolated or irregular tasks. May suit work that recurs and benefits from continuity.
Context and instruction Assess how much explaining a one-off task requires. Repeated work may let a helper build familiarity, but onboarding still takes time.
Total cost Include fees and the cost of arranging each task. Include recurring cost, onboarding, and any unused capacity.
Control, privacy, and continuity Decide what access a particular task requires and what you are comfortable sharing. Consider the ongoing access and relationship the arrangement entails.
Actual relief Check whether the task is completed without extensive follow-up from you. Check whether recurring responsibility is genuinely transferred rather than merely tracked.

These are decision criteria, not claims about any particular service. The show notes list task marketplaces and household-service examples, but topical inclusion does not establish that a service is available where you live, suits your needs, or is endorsed by the publisher.

How to decide whether a time-saving trade is worth it

  1. Name the task. Be specific about the recurring work you want to reduce, not just the feeling of being busy.
  2. Measure the full burden. Include doing the task, coordinating it, handling mistakes, and maintaining any tool or arrangement.
  3. Estimate what is actually returned. Count only time and attention that you can use elsewhere; do not assume a service or app eliminates every step.
  4. Compare the full cost. Include money, setup, fees, tips, review time, and any ongoing commitment relevant to the option.
  5. Try a limited change. Start with one task or a short trial where possible, then decide whether the relief is worth repeating.

The episode also has a chapter about a restaurant reservation tactic, but its accessible notes do not explain how it works or support the heading’s implied reliability. Treat it as a topic in the episode, not as a guaranteed shortcut.
