How Event Streams Work on Object Storage—and What “Produce Latency” Means

Producer acknowledgment latency ends when the configured broker acknowledgment arrives—not when a consumer reads the event or an object-storage file becomes available.

An event stream can feed consumers in real time and also land data in object storage, but those are separate delivery milestones. Producer acknowledgment latency measures the time from a producer’s send or request boundary to the broker acknowledgment configured for that request. It does not, by itself, tell you when a consumer receives the event or when a file or table in object storage becomes available.

That distinction matters when setting performance expectations, diagnosing delays, or choosing a durability policy: a fast acknowledgment can coexist with slower downstream delivery, while waiting for stronger confirmation can add time before the producer gets its acknowledgment.

How an event stream works

An event stream is a continuing sequence of records produced by systems or devices and made available for storage, retrieval, processing, and onward delivery. Apache Kafka’s official introduction describes event streaming as capturing events in real time, storing them durably for later retrieval, processing them in real time or retrospectively, and routing them to other destinations.

In a typical Kafka arrangement, the producer publishes records to a topic. A topic is divided into partitions, and a broker stores records in those partitions. Consumers subscribe to topics and read records independently of the producer. That separation lets consumers process the same retained stream at different times or for different purposes; it is more than a transient push of data across a network.

  • Consumer: reads records and may transform, analyze, or forward them.
  • Downstream destination: may include object storage, where records are delivered as objects or files and can be used in a lake or other data workflow.

The producer-to-broker path and the broker-to-destination path are connected, but they do not share one automatic completion time. A broker may acknowledge a record before a downstream delivery service has buffered it, converted it, or written it to an object.

How the object-storage path differs

Object storage holds data as objects, typically organized by keys and prefixes. To use a stream there, a delivery path must take records from the streaming system and write them as objects or files. That path can be direct, or it can pass through a service that buffers and transforms data before writing it.

A pattern documented by AWS starts with streaming records, for example from Kafka, and delivers them either directly to Amazon S3 or through Amazon Data Firehose. In the Firehose path, records can be transformed or normalized, buffered according to an interval or target size, converted to Parquet, and written under partitioned S3 prefixes. Each step can affect when a usable object appears and how the resulting data is laid out.

What buffering and file conversion change

Buffering groups records so that delivery can write batches rather than a separate tiny object for each event. A buffer’s interval or target size therefore affects the time and volume threshold at which a batch proceeds. If a batch is also transformed or converted to Parquet, those operations belong to the delivery path as well. The producer’s acknowledgment does not mean that this buffering or conversion has finished.

Prefix partitioning organizes objects under paths that can reflect categories such as a time period or other partition key. It affects how data is grouped and located downstream; it is not the same thing as Kafka’s topic partitions. The two kinds of partitioning belong to different parts of the pipeline.

Append-only arrival is not the same as a maintained table

Writing new records to object storage gives a destination for arriving data, but it does not automatically make that destination behave like a database table that updates existing rows or applies deletes. AWS notes that reflecting updates and deletes in a lake can require additional processing, such as AWS Glue together with a streaming Hudi connector to identify and update existing records. The storage destination, table metadata or format, and mutation strategy all contribute to what downstream users see as the current dataset.

What “produce latency” measures

Use the term only after specifying its endpoints. A useful default is producer acknowledgment latency: elapsed time from the producer’s send/request boundary to receipt of the broker acknowledgment configured for that request. The precise start point depends on the instrumentation. A client metric may time a send call differently from a broker request metric, so reports should name the metric or implementation rather than imply every system measures the same interval.

This is not necessarily the time from event creation to a consumer receiving the record, nor the time from producer send to object, file, or table visibility. Those are longer-path metrics with different endpoints. IBM Cloud Event Streams documentation explicitly distinguishes the producer’s view of sending latency from producer-to-consumer end-to-end latency, stating that producer-side latency is lower than the end-to-end interval in the service context it describes.

Metric name to use Start event End event What it answers
Producer acknowledgment latency Producer send call or request, as defined by the instrumentation Producer receives the configured broker acknowledgment How long the producer waited for its acknowledgment
Producer-to-consumer latency Producer send or a separately recorded event-creation timestamp Consumer receives or processes the record, as specified How long until a downstream consumer can act on it
Producer-to-object visibility Producer send or event creation, as specified Object or file is written and meets the stated visibility criterion How long until data reaches the object-storage destination
Producer-to-table visibility Producer send or event creation, as specified Data is queryable in the intended table or dataset How long until the downstream dataset reflects the event

The final two measures need an operational definition of “available.” For example, a written object and a dataset queryable under the expected partitioning or table metadata are not necessarily the same milestone. Choose the endpoint that matches the reader or application that depends on the data.

Three different timestamps can describe one record

Latency discussions often mix a duration with a timestamp that describes when an event belongs in time. Kafka Streams documentation distinguishes three time concepts:

  • Event time: when the original event happened.
  • Ingestion time: when the record is stored in a Kafka topic partition.
  • Processing time: when an application handles the record.

These timestamps can differ. A device may create an event before a delayed network connection sends it; a broker may append the record later still; and a consumer may process it after another delay. None of those timestamps alone is a producer acknowledgment duration. A measurement should state whether it uses clock readings around a send-and-acknowledgment exchange or timestamps carried by the event.

Why acknowledgment policy changes the meaning of the wait

An acknowledgment says that the broker-side conditions configured for the write have been met; the policy determines what those conditions are. It is therefore important to distinguish “the producer got an acknowledgment” from “every replica has confirmed the write.” The two need not be equivalent.

IBM Cloud Event Streams documentation describes the trade-off in its service context: with less stringent acknowledgment behavior, the producer can receive an acknowledgment before all replicas confirm. Its documentation says that with acks=all, acknowledgment follows the leader write and writes by the in-sync replicas. That setting can increase the work or waiting involved before the producer receives confirmation, but the appropriate choice depends on the durability requirement and the exact service behavior—not a universal rule that one setting is always best.

When assessing a latency result, record the acknowledgment policy alongside it. Otherwise, two reported numbers may measure different completion conditions even if both are labelled “produce latency.” Service configurations and failure-handling semantics matter too; the IBM description should not be assumed to specify every Kafka deployment’s behavior.

Client buffering and batching also affect latency

A producer can buffer records and send them in batches. This can improve publishing efficiency, but buffering means a record may wait before a request is sent. IBM’s producer guide notes that a full producer buffer can delay a send call. That delay is on the producer side, so a client-facing send measurement may include time before the broker even receives the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also a throughput-versus-waiting trade-off when a producer waits for each acknowledgment before sending another record. IBM notes that this pattern can prevent batching and constrain publishing rate relative to network round-trip time. In practical terms, timing only the broker’s response while ignoring time queued in the client can conceal part of the producer’s experience; timing the whole client call may include it.

Network behavior and broker acknowledgment or replication work can both influence the observed duration. If a separate delivery service handles object storage, its buffering, transformations, and writes add further elapsed time to a producer-to-object metric—but should not be attributed to producer acknowledgment latency unless the metric explicitly spans that complete path.

What Kafka KIP-1163’s latency figures do—and do not—show

Apache Kafka KIP-1163, “Diskless Core,” describes a proposed object-storage append path. The page gives estimates for components of that proposal and a target for Produce request latency. These values are not a benchmark for Kafka generally, a promise about all object stores, or an expectation for existing managed services.

Component or measure KIP-1163 proposal figure Scope
Buffering Up to 250 ms or 4 MiB, configurable Proposal-specific buffering estimate
Remote-storage upload P50 about 100 ms; P99 about 200–400 ms Proposal-specific upload estimate
Batch-coordination commit P50 about 10 ms; P99 about 20–50 ms Proposal-specific commit estimate
Produce request latency Target: P50 about 500 ms; P99 about 1–2 seconds Target for the proposed diskless append path

The proposal’s Produce request target covers a path that includes buffering, remote-storage upload, and coordination commit. Its figures therefore illustrate why an object-storage-oriented append path can have several latency components; they should not be added mechanically as if they were a universal recipe for actual request timing. Percentiles describe a distribution—P50 is the median and P99 is a high-percentile observation—not a guarantee that every request finishes within that time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a deployment-specific expectation, measure the system and configuration that will actually run the workload. The proposal figures are useful context only when clearly labelled with their proposal scope and request boundary.

How to define and investigate a useful latency metric

  1. Choose the question first. If the concern is how long a publishing application waits, measure from its defined send/request boundary to acknowledgment receipt. If the concern is user-visible freshness, measure to consumer receipt, object arrival, or queryable table state instead.
  2. Name both endpoints in the metric. Specify whether the starting event is event creation, a client send call, or a broker request; specify whether the end is broker acknowledgment, consumer receipt, object write, or table visibility.
  3. Record the acknowledgment condition. Include the configured policy and the service context, because an acknowledgment can represent different durability conditions.
  4. Include client and delivery settings that affect the path. Note relevant buffering and batching behavior, and—for object delivery—the interval or size buffer, transformations, format conversion, and partitioning choices that apply.
  5. Report a distribution and its workload. State percentiles such as P50 and P99, the workload under which they were collected, and the implementation or metric definition. A single average can hide slow-tail requests.
  6. Define visibility in a way users can verify. For object delivery, say whether the endpoint is a written object, a completed batch, or data queryable in a table. Those conditions answer different operational questions.

If an application reports slow sends, determine whether the timed interval includes client-side queueing or buffering before focusing only on broker or storage work. If producer acknowledgments are prompt but object arrival is late, investigate the downstream buffering, transformation, and delivery stages instead of treating the object-store delay as broker produce latency.

Checklist for comparing designs or reading a latency claim

  • Are producer acknowledgment, consumer receipt, and object or table visibility reported as separate milestones?
  • Does the stated acknowledgment policy match the durability condition the workload needs?
  • Are buffering and batching settings included, especially if a delivery service writes objects?
  • Does the object path transform or convert records, and how are its files organized?
  • Does the destination need only append-only arrivals, or must it also represent updates and deletes?
  • Are the start and end events, percentile, workload, and configuration attached to every performance figure?
