How ESA’s FASTNAV Could Help Moon Rovers Travel Faster

FASTNAV aims to help future lunar rovers travel around 1 m/s, but ESA’s 11-day test took place in Spain and the software is not flight-ready.

ESA’s FASTNAV project is developing navigation and control software intended to help future lunar rovers traverse rough terrain at around 1 metre per second (3.6 km/h). That is a development target, not a speed demonstrated on the Moon: ESA’s reported test took place on Earth, and the software is not flight-ready.

What FASTNAV is—and what ESA tested

FASTNAV is a guidance, navigation and control (GNC) software effort for future lunar rovers. ESA reported on 8 October 2026 that an 11-day field campaign had concluded in Fuerteventura, Spain. The team tested autonomous movement across volcanic terrain that included lava boulders and dunes, with short validation runs, longer missions, changing light conditions and overnight trials. ESA’s campaign account describes an Earth-based analogue test, not a lunar mission.

ESA has not reported that FASTNAV has driven on the Moon or flown in space. The trial also does not establish performance under lunar gravity, vacuum, radiation or the Moon’s full thermal environment. ESA says the software is not flight-ready and still needs maturation, robustness improvements, integration work and safety assessments.

How fast is the rover supposed to go?

ESA’s target for FASTNAV is around 1 metre per second, equivalent to about 3.6 km/h. The ESA programme record describes an objective of average traverse speeds up to 1.0 m/s under a continuous-drive approach. These are target figures, not a reported lunar operating speed or a result from a controlled comparison.

In its 2026 announcement, ESA contrasts that target with roughly 0.2 km/h for previous planetary rovers. That is ESA’s broad comparison, not a universal speed limit for every past rover. The figures help explain the ambition of FASTNAV, but do not show a head-to-head test between FASTNAV and another rover.

Why faster autonomous travel could matter

A rover uses mission time to travel between places as well as to examine them. If it can cover ground more quickly while navigating hazards autonomously, more of a mission could be available for exploration and scientific instruments at points of interest.

  • ✅【Meaningful Design】Inspired by the action of human exploration on Mars and the Moon, this very different cosmic exploration vehicle style remote control car was created, unfolding the sail panel can automatically turn on the light effect, if closed to save power consumption, and comes with a model astronaut.
  • ✅【The Best Gift of Enlightenment】This RC toy car is suitable for children from 4 years old and up, cultivating kids' interest in the future of science and space, having fun, and being educational. It is the best space gift for birthdays, children's days, Christmas, Easter, summer camp activities, and back to school.
  • ✅【Rich Control Gameplay】The RC cars have special 6 wheels (4 drive wheels + 2 auxiliary wheels) and can be controlled by a combination of remote controls to achieve a variety of movements [1]. Forward and backward movement. [2]. Lateral movement. [3]. Turning around in place. [4]. Sideways adjustment of body direction. [5]. DEMO auto-drive mode.
  • ✅【Adaptable to Multiple Terrains】Powerful damping springs and high-torque wheels allow the remote control cars to drive and climb over rough terrain, both indoors and outdoors and are not prone to rollovers.
  • ✅【Strong Signal, No Interference】Using a high-quality 2.4 GHz remote control, the actual test effective control distance of 30 meters (no exaggerated propaganda) is very responsive. The signal stability and control distance are much stronger than the traditional infrared remote control.

ESA also points to possible future polar missions. A rover that can move efficiently between sites might spend longer in thermally viable regions and navigate difficult, shadowed terrain. ESA Technical Officer Lennart Puck described this as a prospective benefit: “If we can drive fast enough, we can remain within thermally viable regions, so not lunar day and not lunar night, for longer.” It is a rationale for developing the capability, not evidence that FASTNAV has achieved that outcome on the Moon.

How FASTNAV fits into the navigation system

FASTNAV is one module in GMV UK’s broader NOMAD connected navigation system, with support from GMV Spain. ESA describes integration of AI-assisted terrain and hazard awareness through HAWKEYE. NOMAD also includes ANIME/LUPIN, a positioning, navigation and timing module developed through ESA’s Navigation Innovation and Support Programme.

The activity is associated with ESA’s General Support Technology Programme (GSTP) De-Risk Framework. ESA says FASTNAV developed from earlier technology work called RAPID and is being matured incrementally through GSTP. The RAPID programme record describes the earlier work as a broader effort involving rover locomotion, navigation, localisation and mapping, and human-robot interaction.

Why the speed target is difficult

Moving faster over rough ground is not just a matter of commanding more wheel speed. The rover must perceive terrain, estimate its position, select a route and maintain control as the ground changes. These capabilities have to work together, with enough reliability for a mission where a loss of control could have serious consequences.

ESA’s 2023 RAPID executive summary identifies risks such as a rover becoming airborne and losing steering or braking control. It also notes that reduced stability under lunar gravity can make tipping or wheel lift more likely. These engineering challenges help explain why fast rover travel is demanding; they do not establish that FASTNAV has solved them.

What the test does—and does not—show

  • It shows: FASTNAV underwent an 11-day autonomous field campaign in volcanic terrain in Fuerteventura, with varied lighting and both short and longer trials.
  • It does not show: that a rover reached the target speed on the Moon, that the system has flown, or that the campaign proved performance in lunar gravity or the Moon’s space environment.
  • Its current status: ESA says the software is not flight-ready and describes further development and assessment as necessary.
