EPFO members use a Universal Account Number (UAN) to access online account services. For UAN allotment or activation, EPFO’s current member-portal notice directs members to Aadhaar face authentication through the official UMANG app; the member portal and passbook service are where members access account functions such as passbook viewing, KYC updates and eligible claims. The exact route depends on the task, and claim eligibility must be checked for the individual account.
What the UAN does—and where to activate it
The UAN is the member identifier used to reach EPFO’s online services. The EPFO member interface currently says direct UAN allotment and activation through that portal have been discontinued. It directs members to use Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) through UMANG. EPFO’s 2025 circular describes installing UMANG and Aadhaar Face RD, selecting the UAN service, and following the Aadhaar-linked OTP and face-verification prompts. App labels may change, so follow the current instructions in the official app rather than older portal activation guides.

After allotment or activation, members can use EPFO’s member services. The 2025 circular lists functions including passbook viewing, KYC updates and claim submission. UMANG’s role in face-authenticated UAN activation should not be confused with the member portal: the two routes are not interchangeable for every task.

| Route | Main task described by EPFO | Verification or access |
|---|---|---|
| UMANG | UAN allotment or activation through Aadhaar face authentication, as described in EPFO’s 2025 circular. | Aadhaar face authentication and linked OTP prompts, as directed by the app. |
| EPFO member portal | Member account services, including KYC updates and claim submission, as described in EPFO’s 2025 circular. | UAN and password for member login; particular actions may require additional verification. |
| EPFO passbook and claim-status service | Passbook access and claim-status lookup, according to the EPFO passbook service. | Use the official service and follow its current login instructions. |
EPFO’s Employees Information Booklet (2023) describes passbook access through the member portal and says withdrawal, advance and pension claims may be filed through the Member Portal or UMANG, subject to eligibility. The route shown for a particular service can change; use the live official interface for the task you need.

What members can do online
- View a passbook: Check recorded account information through the official EPFO passbook service.
- Update KYC details: EPFO lists KYC updates among member digital services. Available actions depend on the account and current portal workflow.
- Submit an eligible claim: EPFO materials describe online routes for withdrawal, advance and pension claims. Being able to access a service does not establish that a particular claim is eligible.
- Check claim status: Use EPFO’s official passbook and claim-status service or the status option available through EPFO’s member interface.
What Form 19, Form 10C and Form 31 are for
| Form | Purpose stated by EPFO |
|---|---|
| Form 19 | PF final settlement by a member. |
| Form 10C | Pension withdrawal benefit or a scheme certificate. |
| Form 31 | Part withdrawal or withdrawal in specified cases. |
These form names describe different claim purposes; they do not mean every member can file each claim online. Confirm the form and eligibility shown for your account before submitting. EPFO’s claim-forms information page lists the form purposes.
How to submit a claim and follow it
- Open an official EPFO route. Use the member portal or UMANG option indicated for the service, and sign in or complete the requested identity verification.
- Check your member record. Confirm that your UAN profile, KYC information and service details are correct and that the required details are recorded.
- Choose the claim type shown as available. Select the applicable claim and complete the on-screen verification and submission steps. Eligibility is claim- and account-specific.
- Keep the acknowledgement. Save the submission acknowledgement or reference details so you can identify the claim later.
- Monitor the status. Use EPFO’s official claim-status route and follow any request for additional information through the official portal.
Eligibility details: use older EPFO guidance with care
EPFO’s Online Claim Settlement FAQ (2017) lists conditions for online claims. Because this guidance is older, treat it as published guidance rather than confirmation of the current rule: check the live portal for the requirements applicable to your claim.
- The FAQ lists an activated UAN, a working mobile number for activation, Aadhaar seeded in EPFO with OTP-based UIDAI e-KYC, and a bank account with IFSC seeded in EPFO among online-claim conditions.
- It says PAN should be seeded for final-settlement claims when service is less than five years.
- For Form 19, it lists joining and exit dates recorded, no current employment in a covered establishment, and filing no earlier than two months after leaving.
- For an online Form 10C pension withdrawal benefit, it gives a service-duration condition of more than six months and less than 9.5 years.
These requirements should not be generalized to every claim or treated as a current eligibility ruling. The available claim option and current instructions on the official portal are the relevant check for an individual member.

Processing time and portal notices
EPFO does not provide a fixed settlement time in the materials covered here. The member interface has carried a temporary notice that services following database consolidation were live in phases and that claims or service requests could take longer than usual during an initial two-week stabilization period, with additional validation. Such operational notices can expire or change; check the live EPFO member interface for the notice in force rather than relying on a past estimate.

Protect your UAN and claim details
EPFO warns members about credential theft. Its member interface states: “EPFO never requests personal information such as Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details over the phone.” Do not share your password, OTP, Aadhaar, PAN or bank information with unsolicited callers or message senders claiming to represent EPFO, and do not pay anyone who asks for a deposit to process a claim. Reach services through the official EPFO domain or the official UMANG app route.
