Can you use a Garmin golf watch without your phone?
Garmin describes phone pairing as the way to access connected features; that does not establish that every golf function on the watch requires a phone. The Approach S12 manual, for example, explains the benefits of pairing but does not say pairing is necessary for all golf use. Check the manual for your specific model to see which functions work on the watch and which depend on a phone or app.

For the S12, Garmin says pairing provides access to scorecard syncing, course updates, live scoring in the Garmin Golf app, software updates and other connected features. Garmin’s Approach S12 Owner’s Manual directs users to install Garmin Golf, select Settings > Pair Phone on the watch, and add the device in the app. The watch must be paired through Garmin Golf to use its connected features.
How does pairing differ by Garmin watch model?
Garmin’s compatibility documentation distinguishes watches that pair directly with Garmin Golf from some earlier models that sync through Garmin Connect or Garmin Express. These routes describe scorecard syncing; they do not mean that all listed watches have identical features.

Use Garmin Golf for supported direct pairings
For the S12, Garmin instructs users to install Garmin Golf, choose Settings > Pair Phone on the watch, and add the device in the app—not to rely on pairing from the phone’s Bluetooth settings alone. Garmin’s S70 instructions likewise say to pair through Garmin Golf rather than simply through the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Follow the manual for your model, since the steps are not necessarily interchangeable.

Connected features vary by model
The S50 documentation groups phone-connected functions that include Garmin Golf, Garmin Connect, Connect IQ, glances, controls, safety and tracking features, and phone interactions such as notifications. Those are documented examples for the S50; they should not be assumed to apply to every Approach watch. The Garmin Approach S50 and S70 Owner’s Manuals provide model-specific connectivity instructions.

The official compatibility information and manuals cited here do not say whether a paid subscription is needed for core golf functions or whether a particular feature requires a paid tier. That silence is not proof that no paid option or subscription-gated feature exists. How to check your own watch
- Identify the exact model. Use the model name shown on the watch or in its manual; “Garmin golf watch” alone is not specific enough to determine the connection route.
- Check Garmin’s compatibility page. Find the model in the list and note whether Garmin Golf pairs with it directly or whether syncing goes through Garmin Connect or Garmin Express.
- Read the model’s connectivity section. Separate golf functions available on the watch from connected features that require pairing, an app or a phone.
- For subscription questions, verify the specific feature. The cited manuals and compatibility page do not settle paid-plan requirements, so consult current Garmin information for the feature and region you intend to use.
