Early experiences can influence later fear, social competence, responses to stress and adaptability, but they do not determine an animal’s future on their own. The animal’s species, individual characteristics and later environment all matter.
Environment means more than the physical space an animal occupies. Nutrition, health, social contact, handling, opportunities to learn and the mental states associated with those conditions can all shape behavior. Understanding that combination helps explain why the same experience may affect two animals differently—and why later conditions can strengthen, soften or change the effects of earlier ones.

How does environment affect animal behavior?
Animals respond to the conditions around them, and their behavior can also change those conditions. A young animal’s opportunities to interact with its mother, peers or people can influence what it learns and how it responds to later encounters. Physical surroundings and access to resources matter too, but they are only part of the picture.

A response such as avoidance, aggression, exploration or social contact may reflect several influences at once, including current health, previous learning, emotional state, age and temperament. A change in behavior can therefore be useful information about an animal’s circumstances, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

The Five Domains model offers a way to organize questions about welfare and behavior: nutrition, physical environment, health, behavioral interactions and mental state. It also makes human–animal interaction part of the assessment. Familiarity, context and the nature of handling can make an interaction supportive or threatening; simply noting that an animal had contact with a person does not tell us whether the experience was positive.
How can early experiences affect behavior later in life?
Early life can be a responsive period because animals are developing and learning how to interact with their surroundings. Social contact, nutrition and stressful conditions may influence later learning and behavior. Creel and Albright’s 1987 review of food animals discussed lasting behavioral and learning effects of early experience, while also emphasizing the need to assess welfare. That work is useful background, not a stand-alone statement of current consensus across all species.
Experiences can affect what an animal learns to expect and how it handles a later challenge. Early contact with other animals or people may provide opportunities to become familiar with them; stressful or limited experiences may shape later responses in other ways. These are possible influences, not guarantees. An early event does not fix an animal’s personality or make a particular adult behavior inevitable.
It is also important to distinguish outcomes that are often grouped together. A change in a measured stress response is not automatically the same as improved social competence, better adaptability or better welfare. Each describes a different aspect of an animal’s response, and evidence for one should not be presented as proof of the others.

What kinds of experience matter?
Caregivers, peers and social learning
Interactions with a mother or other caregiver, littermates, peers, familiar people and the wider social group create opportunities to learn. Social learning can help animals acquire useful information or new behavior. It can also transmit maladaptive behavior, so social influence is not beneficial by definition.
For wildlife, social connections may support protection, mate choice, alloparental care, foraging and cooperation. Those benefits have to be understood alongside possible costs and the welfare consequences of social living. The relevant question is not simply whether an animal is social, but how the particular relationships and group conditions affect that animal.
Human contact and handling
Human contact varies in familiarity, context and quality. Calm, suitable interactions and threatening or disruptive handling are not interchangeable experiences. A record that an animal was handled, trained or exposed to people is therefore incomplete unless it also describes the context and the animal’s response.
Nutrition, health and physical surroundings
Nutrition and health influence the conditions in which behavior occurs, while the physical environment determines what actions are possible and what challenges an animal encounters. These factors interact with behavioral opportunities and mental state. Describing an environment only by its size or equipment, for example, leaves out social relationships, health and the animal’s experience of that setting.

Why do species and developmental timing matter?
There is no universal timetable for when an animal is most responsive to a particular experience. Development depends on species and life history, including how mature an animal is at birth, its social structure and its broader developmental trajectory. A period described for one species should not be treated as a rule for another.
Dogs provide a specific example. A 2022 review of canine socialization describes a dog socialization period of 3–12 weeks and discusses the importance of positive, suitable exposure. This period is a dog-specific developmental description, not a general schedule for cats, livestock, wildlife or mammals as a whole. The duration does not establish that every exposure during those weeks has the same effect or that later learning is impossible.
Reviews of early adversity in large, long-lived social mammals likewise emphasize that timing varies with species life history and developmental course. Because the evidence covers different species, experiences and outcomes, it cannot support one pooled cross-species effect size or a single prediction about what any individual animal will do.

What examples show how early and later conditions interact?
Piglets: early social experience and later transitions
A 2023 review of piglet experiences reports that early contact with non-littermates can reduce stress around weaning and mixing. Its broader discussion considers interactions with the dam, other pigs, humans and environmental complexity as influences on immediate and longer-term adaptability. This does not mean that one social exposure will produce the same outcome in every piglet; responses depend on the animal and the conditions surrounding the experience.

The review also highlights why later context matters. A marked transition from enriched early housing to a non-enriched setting may be associated with increased abnormal behavior. Early enrichment should therefore not be treated as a protective factor that makes subsequent conditions irrelevant. Continuity, the nature of the transition and what follows can all matter.
Domestic and wild guinea pigs: domestication is not upbringing
A 2017 comparative review focused mainly on domestic and wild guinea pigs describes domestication-related differences in social and emotional behavior, cognition and hormonal stress responses; some behavioral profiles are apparent early in development. Domestication is a population-level evolutionary process. It is distinct from the experiences that shape one individual animal, such as its early care or current housing.
This distinction matters when interpreting comparisons between domestic and wild animals. A group-level difference associated with domestication does not show that a particular individual’s behavior was caused by its upbringing, and it should not be used as a simple forecast for every member of either population.

Farm-animal social behavior is dynamic. Age, sex, personality, cognitive ability, affective state and previous experience can interact, so animals may respond differently to the same housing or management change. Lee, Arnott and Turner’s 2022 review applies this principle to social behavior and welfare. A group average may conceal meaningful differences among individuals.

How can early effects change over time?
Early experience is part of a developmental history, not a substitute for the animal’s current circumstances. Later social relationships, handling, health and physical conditions continue to influence behavior. A response seen at one age or in one setting may change when the animal encounters different conditions.
Transitions deserve particular attention. A gradual or familiar change is not necessarily equivalent to an abrupt move into a substantially different environment. The piglet findings on enriched early housing followed by a non-enriched setting illustrate why experiences should be considered in sequence rather than in isolation. They do not establish that every change causes abnormal behavior, but they caution against assuming that early enrichment will offset a poor later environment.
For an individual animal, it is more accurate to describe a pattern as a possible influence or association unless the evidence establishes a cause. Early adversity research in long-lived mammals is heterogeneous, and different studies may examine different exposures, ages and outcomes. A general claim that early adversity has one predictable lifelong effect would exceed what that evidence can support.

How should you interpret a behavior change?
Start with what changed, when it changed and in which circumstances it appears. A behavior observed after a move, introduction to new animals or change in handling may be related to that event, but timing alone does not prove causation. Health, nutrition, social context and other simultaneous changes should also be considered.
- Describe the behavior precisely. Record what the animal does, in what context and how the response differs from its usual pattern, rather than relying only on labels such as “difficult” or “fearful.”
- Consider the animal’s history and stage of development. Note relevant early social, human, nutritional or stressful experiences without assuming any one of them explains the behavior.
- Look at present conditions. Consider health, nutrition, the physical environment, social relationships and the character of human interactions.
- Separate the outcomes. An observed behavior, a stress response, adaptability and welfare are related but distinct questions; evidence for one should not stand in for another.
- Account for individual variation. Animals exposed to the same condition may respond differently because their histories and characteristics differ.
This framework helps organize observation; it is not a diagnosis. The Five Domains model can prompt a broader welfare assessment, but the framework alone cannot prove that a particular intervention caused a behavior or establish what treatment an individual animal needs.
What can—and cannot—be concluded across species?
Research on this topic spans different species, developmental periods, experiences and outcomes. The strongest general conclusion is that behavior develops through interactions among inherited traits, early development, learning, social relationships, physiology and current surroundings. The evidence does not establish a single cross-species statistic for how much early experience changes behavior, nor does it support one universal critical period.
Species-specific reviews and examples can clarify particular questions: dog socialization timing, piglet responses to early social experience and transitions, or domestication-related profiles in guinea pigs. They should remain bounded to their populations and contexts. Generalizing from one example to all animals erases the very differences—life history, development and social structure—that help explain behavior.
