Enterprise AI agents work by coordinating a user interface, an orchestrator, a language model, approved business tools, and access-controlled enterprise data. The model interprets requests and helps decide what to do; the surrounding system supplies the identity, permissions, workflow logic, information, and monitoring needed to act safely across business systems.
What makes an AI agent an enterprise system?
A language model by itself is not an enterprise agent. It can generate or interpret language, but it does not automatically have authorized access to company records, know which business process to follow, or safely complete work in other applications. Production behavior comes from the components around the model and how they are governed.

| Client or entry point | Accepts a person’s request through a conversational interface, custom application, or another business channel. | Authenticate the user and preserve the identity and context needed by downstream services. |
| Message and state infrastructure | Moves requests and results between services and can maintain workflow or conversation state. | Protect stored state and avoid retaining more sensitive content than the task requires. |
| Orchestrator | Coordinates the model, tools, knowledge retrieval, and workflow steps; routes requests to the appropriate capabilities. | Enforce policy and authorization at each action, not just at the initial conversation. |
| Language model | Interprets natural-language input and helps generate responses or select a next step. | Constrain its access and treat its output as a component of the workflow, not as proof that an action is authorized or correct. |
| Tools and actions | Expose functions, APIs, and services the agent can invoke to retrieve information or perform work. | Limit each tool’s permissions to its actual duties and record consequential actions. |
| Enterprise knowledge | Provides approved information that can be retrieved to ground responses in company content. | Honor the source data’s access rules and review data quality. |
Microsoft’s description of agent architecture identifies the client, infrastructure, orchestrator, model, and tool calling or catalog as core components. AWS’s enterprise architecture groups core services around model access, tools, and knowledge bases, with security, observability, and discoverability spanning the layers. These are vendor reference architectures: they help explain design choices, but they are not neutral head-to-head performance results.

How does a request become a response or business action?
- Receive and identify the request. A user or application sends input through an entry point. The system needs enough identity and context to apply the user’s permissions to the work that follows.
- Route through the orchestrator. The orchestrator decides which model, knowledge source, or tool is relevant and manages the sequence. A simple question may need only retrieval and a response; a multi-system workflow may require several authorized steps.
- Retrieve information or invoke a tool. The system obtains relevant enterprise context, calls a function or API, or does both. Tool discovery and execution should be governed rather than treated as unrestricted model capabilities.
- Generate and check the result. The model uses the request and available context to produce a response or assist with the next workflow step. Safety checks and policy controls can apply to model access and generated content.
- Return the outcome and record activity. The result goes back through the entry point, while logs and monitoring provide visibility into access, decisions, and actions.
The exact division of responsibility varies by implementation. The key design question is not simply which model to use; it is how the orchestrator, tools, data permissions, and operating controls work together for the task.
How do enterprise agents use company knowledge?
For a knowledge-grounded answer, an organization first ingests and indexes approved material. At query time, the system retrieves relevant context and supplies it to the model so the response can be based on that material. This pattern is commonly described as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
Rank #2
Google Cloud’s RAG architecture describes indexed vector data used in the retrieval flow and safety filters applied to generated responses. AWS describes knowledge bases that can use vector stores or graph storage for semantic retrieval. These describe implementation options, not a requirement that every agent use one particular storage technology.
- Keep authorization with the data. Retrieval must respect access controls on source information. Making content searchable does not make it appropriate for every user or agent to see.
- Apply least privilege. Give an agent access only to the information and operations required for its assigned tasks.
- Manage source quality. Retrieved context can only help when the underlying material is suitable, current, and maintained. Retrieval does not independently validate it.
Can conversational automation work across systems and channels?
Yes. A conversational interface can be one way to initiate or guide a workflow, while the same orchestration layer can also serve application entry points or event-driven automation. Google Cloud’s architecture for orchestrating access to disparate enterprise systems describes multiple interaction channels, including a custom web frontend, a conversational interface, and event-driven automation.
Rank #3
This distinction matters when choosing a design. If the workflow is only a conversation, a focused interface may be sufficient. If work also starts from an application or business event, the architecture should separate the workflow’s orchestration and controls from any single user interface. That lets different entry points reach the appropriate capabilities without assuming that all requests have the same user context or authorization.
How should identity, security, and governance be designed?
Treat every agent and every tool it can reach as an access-control concern. Microsoft Entra’s agent identity documentation covers agent identities, ownership and sponsors, lifecycle governance, and protection of access to resources. Microsoft’s security overview also warns that orchestration agents interacting with other agents can create paths for compromise to propagate. Poorly inventoried, overprivileged, or unmanaged agents can become an agent-sprawl problem.

A practical control set follows from the vendor guidance:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Inventory agents and assign accountable owners. Record what each agent is for, who is responsible for it, and which resources and tools it can access.
- Scope identity and permissions to duties. Use a defined identity and least-privilege access for each agent and its tools; avoid granting broad permissions merely to make integration easier.
- Govern the lifecycle. Establish how agents are approved, maintained, reviewed, and retired, including ownership and sponsorship where applicable.
- Log access and actions. Keep audit trails that make it possible to understand which agent accessed data or invoked a capability.
- Monitor across layers. Observe model access, tool execution, knowledge access, and workflow behavior rather than treating the conversational interface as the whole system.
- Review agent-to-agent connections. Where agents can delegate or interact, account for the possibility that one compromised or misconfigured agent affects another.
AWS highlights model access policy, tool authorization, knowledge-base access control, and cross-layer monitoring. Google Cloud organizes agent governance around visibility, identity and access, security and compliance, audit trails, and operational performance. Together, these perspectives make governance an architectural responsibility, not a final checklist added after deployment.

How should teams assess an architecture for production?
Use the same evaluation dimensions across candidate designs, and test them against the organization’s real workflows. AWS’s Agentic AI Lens, published June 10, 2026, frames production concerns around infrastructure, orchestration, operational practice, security, and human-in-the-loop governance. That guidance is useful as a set of review areas, not as evidence that one platform outperforms another.
| Evaluation area | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|
| Integration and orchestration | Which systems must the workflow reach? How many steps and dependencies need coordination? |
| Identity and authorization | How are users, agents, and tools identified? Can permissions be scoped to the specific workflow and resource? |
| Data ingestion and retrieval | Which sources are approved, how is relevant context indexed and retrieved, and how are source permissions retained? |
| Governance and audit | Can teams discover agents, identify owners, manage lifecycles, and reconstruct relevant access and actions? |
| Observability and operations | Can operators see model access, tool calls, workflow failures, and operational performance across layers? |
| Deployment and channels | Does the design support the required conversational, application, and event-driven entry points in the intended environment? |
These dimensions synthesize vendor architecture guidance; they are not measured comparison results. A sound selection process therefore maps each requirement to a demonstrable control or operational capability in the proposed design, rather than relying on a vendor diagram as proof of fit.
