How Encrypted DNS Works: DoH, DoT, and DNS-over-QUIC Explained

DoH, DoT, and DoQ secure DNS traffic between a client and resolver in different ways. Understand their trade-offs, limits, and how to choose.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Encrypted DNS protects the connection between your device and the DNS resolver it uses. DNS over HTTPS (DoH) carries DNS messages through HTTPS; DNS over TLS (DoT) carries them over TLS; and DNS over QUIC (DoQ) maps them directly onto QUIC. All three can make DNS questions harder for observers on the network path to read or alter, but none hides those questions from the resolver itself or replaces DNSSEC.

What is encrypted DNS?

When a device needs to find a domain’s network address, it asks a DNS resolver a question. In traditional DNS, those questions and their answers can travel without transport encryption. An observer positioned along the network path may therefore be able to read them, and an attacker in a position to interfere with the exchange may try to alter or divert it.

Encrypted DNS changes the transport between the client—the device or application making the request—and the selected resolver. DoH, DoT, and DoQ encrypt that client-to-resolver exchange using different protocols. The resolver still has to receive the DNS question to answer it, so encryption protects a segment of the trip rather than making the query anonymous or invisible to every party.

The distinction matters because “encrypted DNS” describes how the DNS message travels to a resolver, not a promise about what happens to query data afterward. The resolver’s operator remains able to see the requests it handles, and an observer can still see network information such as the IP addresses communicating. Choosing a transport and choosing whom to trust with DNS queries are related but separate decisions.

How DoH, DoT, and DoQ carry DNS

The protocols aim to protect DNS on the client-to-resolver path, but they wrap DNS in different transports. Those differences affect integration, network behavior, and what a client or network must support.

Protocol How DNS is carried Useful distinction
DoH DNS query-response exchanges are mapped into HTTP exchanges secured with HTTPS. RFC 8484 specifies an IP, TCP, TLS, and HTTP stack. The HTTP layer can use HTTP features such as caching, redirection, proxying, authentication, and compression.
DoT DNS is carried using TLS, as specified in RFC 7858. It is a direct DNS-over-TLS approach focused on traffic between a stub resolver and a recursive resolver.
DoQ DNS messages are mapped directly onto QUIC connections, with TLS security integrated as part of QUIC, as specified in RFC 9250. It uses QUIC transport rather than TCP or an HTTP layer.

DNS over HTTPS (DoH)

DoH puts DNS queries and their responses into HTTP exchanges protected by HTTPS. That gives DNS an HTTP integration layer: features of HTTP can be relevant to how requests are handled and routed, rather than DNS being carried only through a dedicated DNS transport mapping. RFC 8484 specifies DoH over TCP and TLS. DoH can also run with HTTP/3 to use some QUIC benefits, but that does not make it the same protocol as DoQ: DoH still has HTTP between DNS and the underlying transport.

The flexibility of HTTP is a trade-off, not a guarantee of better privacy or speed. HTTP behavior and configuration can matter to the connection, while any performance result depends on the particular client, resolver, implementation, and network path. A DoH label alone does not tell you all of those details.

DNS over TLS (DoT)

DoT carries DNS using TLS to protect the communication between a client and resolver. RFC 7858 describes its use profiles and performance considerations, with particular attention to stub-to-recursive resolver traffic. Unlike DoH, it does not map the DNS exchange into an HTTP request-response exchange.

That more direct mapping can make DoT an operationally distinct choice from DoH, but it does not establish that every device, application, or network supports it. A client needs a way to select and authenticate the intended resolver, and the network path must permit the connection. Support and configuration should be checked in the actual environment rather than assumed from the protocol name.

DNS over QUIC (DoQ)

DoQ maps DNS messages directly onto QUIC connections. QUIC incorporates TLS security and provides streams and packet-loss recovery designed for QUIC. Its streams avoid TCP’s head-of-line blocking between streams, a transport design property intended to reduce one source of delay when traffic is affected by loss. RFC 9250 describes DoQ’s privacy properties as similar to DoT and its latency characteristics as similar to classic DNS over UDP.

Those are protocol design characteristics, not a promise that DoQ will be faster on a particular connection. Real results depend on network conditions and on both endpoints’ implementations. DoQ is also distinct from DoH over HTTP/3: both can involve QUIC, but DoH retains the HTTP layer while DoQ maps DNS directly onto QUIC.

What encrypted DNS protects—and what it does not

Protection between the client and resolver

When encryption and server authentication are correctly configured, encrypted DNS helps prevent a passive observer on the path from reading DNS questions and responses. It can also help protect against on-path tampering or diversion because the client authenticates the intended server. The scope is important: this protection covers the exchange between the client and its selected resolver, not every later step in resolving or connecting to a website.

The resolver can still see queries

A resolver must process a question to return an answer. DoH, DoT, and DoQ therefore do not hide DNS query content from the resolver operator. The resolver can associate queries with the client connection it receives. If your concern is who can observe or retain query history, the resolver’s identity and privacy practices matter alongside transport encryption.

Metadata and correlation remain possible

Encryption does not erase all clues about network activity. IP addresses remain visible to network observers, and connection timing or patterns may still support traffic analysis or correlation. DoH also has an HTTP layer, where cookies and request-header fingerprints can act as additional correlators. RFC 8484 says DoH clients should not accept cookies unless a use case explicitly requires them.

Connection reuse creates a related trade-off. Long-lived connections can improve performance, but they group requests over time and may expose more information for correlation. Encryption protects message contents on the path; it does not make connection behavior or all surrounding metadata disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Encrypted DNS is not DNSSEC

Transport encryption and DNSSEC address different security problems. DoH, DoT, and DoQ protect the channel used to exchange DNS messages with a resolver. DNSSEC enables validation of signed DNS data, providing integrity checks for DNS response data. A secure channel to a resolver does not, by itself, provide DNSSEC’s response-data integrity.

They can be used together. Encrypted transport can protect the client-to-resolver exchange from on-path reading or interference, while DNSSEC validation addresses whether signed DNS data can be validated. Neither should be treated as a substitute for the other, and the presence of one does not establish that the other is in use.

How to choose between DoH, DoT, and DoQ

There is no universal winner. The best fit depends on compatibility, the network path, resolver configuration, and which operator you are willing to trust. A protocol’s design does not establish that it will be available in every operating system or application, or that it will deliver a particular speed on your connection.

Decision point What to check
Client support Confirm that the operating system or application you intend to configure supports the protocol you plan to use.
Resolver support Confirm that the chosen resolver offers that transport and that you have the information needed to identify it.
Network compatibility Check whether the network permits the connection and whether its policies or services depend on seeing local DNS traffic.
Integration needs DoH uses HTTP features; DoT uses DNS over TLS; DoQ maps DNS directly to QUIC. Consider which model fits the client and environment.
Privacy policy Decide which resolver operator receives the questions and review its handling of DNS queries. Encryption does not remove that trust decision.
Observed performance Evaluate behavior on the actual network and implementation. Protocol design characteristics do not guarantee a specific user-visible latency.

When HTTP integration is important

DoH may suit an environment that already uses HTTP infrastructure or needs HTTP features such as proxying or redirection. That same integration means HTTP-specific behavior, including cookies and request headers, deserves attention in privacy-sensitive deployments. DoH’s use of HTTPS does not make it inherently more secure than DoT or DoQ in every setup; correct server authentication and configuration remain essential.

When a direct DNS transport is preferred

DoT and DoQ avoid DoH’s HTTP mapping, but they differ from each other in transport. DoT uses TLS for DNS traffic, while DoQ uses QUIC. If a client or resolver only supports one option, that compatibility fact may decide the question. If multiple options are supported, policy and behavior on the relevant network are more useful selection criteria than assuming a protocol is universally fastest or most private.

Resolver identity and discovery

Encrypted DNS requires more than knowing a server’s IP address. The client may need the resolver’s hostname, alternate addresses, a non-standard port, or a URI template, depending on the protocol and configuration. The hostname is particularly relevant to identifying and authenticating the intended resolver; selecting an address alone does not describe the complete configuration.

RFC 9462 describes discovery of designated resolvers and the additional information clients may need. RFC 9463 defines DHCP and Router Advertisement options for network-designated resolvers using DoH, DoT, or DoQ. Those options can provide a DNS Authentication Domain Name, IP addresses, and service parameters. In practice, this allows a network to advertise encrypted resolvers through network configuration mechanisms rather than requiring every client to be configured in isolation.

Discovery is not the same as a guarantee that a client will use a particular resolver. The client, operating system, application, and network must support the relevant mechanisms and configuration. When investigating a setup, identify which resolver is actually selected and how its identity is authenticated instead of inferring it from a network label or a protocol toggle.

What encrypted DNS changes for local networks

Some networks use DNS visibility for filtering, inspection, or other local policy controls. When a client encrypts DNS to a resolver outside that system, a device designed to inspect ordinary visible DNS may no longer see the questions it expects. RFC 8484 notes that systems relying on visible DNS will not function as intended when DNS confidentiality and integrity are protected by TLS unless those systems are adapted to the deployment.

This can matter on managed networks, where a network administrator may designate a resolver or require specific handling. It can also affect troubleshooting: a local DNS filter may appear ineffective if the client is sending queries through a different encrypted resolver. The right response depends on the network’s policy and the client’s configuration; encryption is not a way to assume that local filtering will remain active or that a network’s requirements can be ignored.

A practical way to assess an encrypted DNS setup

Before enabling a protocol, separate the question into transport, identity, and trust. That keeps a successful encrypted connection from being mistaken for a complete privacy or security solution.

  1. Identify the client making DNS requests. Check whether requests come from the operating system, a particular application, or both. Support in one does not establish support in another.
  2. Choose the resolver deliberately. Establish which organization will receive the questions and consider its privacy practices. Encryption secures the connection to that resolver; it does not hide queries from it.
  3. Check protocol and resolver compatibility. Confirm whether the client and resolver support DoH, DoT, or DoQ, and find the configuration details required to identify and authenticate the resolver.
  4. Account for the network. Consider whether the network advertises designated resolvers or relies on DNS visibility for filtering and inspection. A mismatch can change which resolver handles queries or make local controls behave differently.
  5. Verify what is actually being used. A setting is not proof that every DNS request follows that path. Check the effective client and resolver configuration, especially where applications can have their own DNS behavior.
  6. Keep DNSSEC separate in your assessment. If DNS data validation matters, determine whether DNSSEC validation is provided; do not infer it from the presence of encrypted transport.

Common misconceptions

  • “Encrypted DNS hides my browsing history from my DNS provider.” It does not. The resolver receives the queries it answers and can associate them with the client connection.
  • “DoH is automatically more secure than DoT or DoQ.” The protocols use different transports and integration models. Security depends on proper configuration and authentication, not simply choosing the one with HTTPS in its name.
  • “Encrypted DNS prevents all network tracking.” IP addresses remain visible, and timing, connection behavior, or other metadata may still enable correlation.
  • “Encrypted DNS replaces DNSSEC.” It does not. Encrypted transport protects the channel; DNSSEC provides validation of signed DNS data.
  • “QUIC means DoH and DoQ are the same.” DoH over HTTP/3 can use QUIC, but it retains HTTP. DoQ maps DNS messages directly onto QUIC.
  • “A protocol’s design proves it will be faster.” RFC-described transport properties are not a benchmark of your device, resolver, or network path.
