It can keep your primary address out of that website’s hands, help you identify which signup is sending unwanted mail, and—in services that support it—let you disable that address. It does not make you anonymous, stop every kind of tracking, or protect an account if someone gets your password or compromises its recovery process.
What an email alias does
An alias is an address you use in place of your primary email address when signing up for a site, service, or mailing list. Messages sent to the alias are relayed to the inbox you choose. The sender sees the alias rather than your underlying address; you can still read the forwarded message in your ordinary inbox.

“Alias,” “mask,” and “forwarding address” are often used for similar arrangements, but they do not guarantee identical features. One service may let you reply through the alias, another may only forward incoming mail, and another may remove certain hidden trackers. An alias is therefore best understood as a layer between a sender and your inbox—not as a universal privacy or security tool.

The relay provider sits in the email path. The sender may not see your primary address, but the service operating the relay handles the forwarding process. Its privacy disclosures, retention practices, sender restrictions, and account controls are part of the trust decision.

How aliases can reduce inbox exposure
They keep a site from receiving your primary address
If you give a store or newsletter a unique alias, it need not receive the address you use for personal correspondence or important accounts. That reduces direct exposure of your primary address to that recipient. It does not guarantee that the recipient cannot identify you through other information you provide, or that your identity is hidden from every party involved in delivering the email.
One alias per site makes unwanted mail easier to trace
Use a different alias for each signup when your provider supports creating and managing multiple addresses. If unwanted mail arrives through one of them, you can see which address it was sent to. Where the service offers per-alias controls, you may be able to block that alias or turn off its forwarding without changing your primary email address.
This is a practical containment tool, not a way to undo an exposure. Disabling an alias can stop future forwarding through that address, but it cannot retract messages already delivered, remove information a site has already stored, or change the password associated with an account.

Some services also filter parts of messages
Address masking and message processing are separate features. DuckDuckGo says its Email Protection service removes multiple types of hidden email trackers. Apple says its relay applies standard spam filtering. Those are specific provider statements about their services; they do not establish that all aliases remove trackers, nor that any relay blocks every form of tracking.
What an alias does not protect
It does not make you anonymous
A mask hides your underlying address from the sender using the mask, not from every party in the email path. The relay provider handles the forwarding, and the website may still know who you are from your name, payment details, shipping address, account activity, or other information you give it. Using an alias is not the same as browsing or communicating anonymously.
It does not make phishing safe
A phishing message can be sent to an alias just as it can be sent to a regular address. A mask may make it less useful for a sender to learn your primary address, but it does not tell you whether a message is genuine. Check unexpected requests carefully, especially before following links, opening attachments, or entering credentials. An alias does not replace account-specific protections such as unique passwords and multi-factor authentication.

It does not secure a compromised account
If someone can access the account that receives forwarded messages, masking the address does not prevent them from reading those messages. Nor does it fix a weak or reused password, or a compromised recovery route. Treat the email account behind the aliases as a sensitive account: protect it with a unique password, enable multi-factor authentication where available, and review its recovery options.

Forwarding introduces another point where delivery rules matter. A service may limit which senders can reach an alias, impose a usage limit, or fail to relay mail when a sender has not met its requirements. Some aliases are designed mainly to receive forwarded messages; others support sending or replying through the mask. If you need to contact a seller or support team, verify that the address can handle replies before using it for the transaction.

| Apple Hide My Email with Sign in with Apple | Apple says it creates unique, random addresses that forward to a personal inbox. For the Sign in with Apple option, an app or site can use its own unique address. Apple says only designated sender addresses are automatically forwarded. Its support page says standard spam filtering is applied and messages are deleted from relay servers after delivery, usually within seconds. | Apple’s support page, published December 9, 2025, describes Apple’s service, not a general rule for aliases. Managing forwarding under an iCloud+ subscription is described in Apple support. Apple’s claims are provider statements, not an independent audit. |
| Firefox Relay | Mozilla documents forwarding masks, the ability to disable forwarding for a mask, and replies from the real email address for Premium users. Its support page also describes blocking promotional mail and using a custom domain as Premium features. | Mozilla’s page, last updated August 20, 2024, documents up to five free masks and unlimited masks in Premium. Because that documentation is older, check current limits and features before choosing a plan. |
| DuckDuckGo Email Protection | DuckDuckGo describes a free service with unlimited unique private addresses and removal of multiple types of hidden email trackers. Its privacy help page says it hides a personal address without saving email contents. | Access depends on the DuckDuckGo browser or extension routes described in its help materials. The privacy and tracker statements are DuckDuckGo’s own descriptions, not an independent audit. |
| SimpleLogin | The Mozilla Add-ons listing describes aliases that forward to a personal address, can receive and send email, and can be blocked individually. It lists custom domains and unlimited aliases as Premium features. | The listing was last updated March 20, 2025; check current plan details and behavior. A listing is not an independent assessment of privacy practices. |
Apple also documents a service-specific delivery constraint for developers using Sign in with Apple private relay: each private relay address has a daily limit of 100 messages. Apple warns that mail may bounce if the sender’s domain or address has not been registered with its relay. This implementation detail applies to Apple’s relay and should not be assumed to describe other providers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an alias based on what you need it to do
Before adopting a service, decide whether the address is for a one-way signup or an account where you may need to communicate. A newsletter subscription may only need to receive mail. A purchase, booking, or service account may send receipts, order updates, or support conversations, so the ability to reply through the mask can matter. The Associated Press article “One Tech Tip: Don’t give your email to strangers, use a decoy address instead” quotes Proton CEO Andy Yen noting that reply capability can be important when there is a problem with an order.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Receiving only: Confirm that incoming messages are forwarded reliably and that you can disable a single alias if it starts receiving unwanted mail.
- Replies or outbound messages: Check whether replies go out through the alias, whether the recipient sees your primary address, and whether the service permits sending as well as receiving.
- Frequent signups: Compare the current free and paid alias limits, and confirm what happens when you reach a limit. Do not assume an old support page reflects today’s plans.
- Tracker filtering: Look for a provider’s clear description of which message elements it processes. A claim about removing multiple types of hidden trackers is not proof that every tracking method is blocked.
- Privacy and trust: Read the provider’s privacy disclosures and terms, including what it says about message contents and retention. Treat provider statements as statements of policy and practice, not as independent verification.
- Compatibility: Check the supported browser, device, extension, or sign-in route, along with any sender restrictions that could affect messages you expect to receive.
Set up aliases without losing control of important accounts
- Choose a service and understand its route. Review how it creates addresses, where messages are forwarded, and which browsers or devices it supports. If the provider documents a specific sign-in method or extension, use its current instructions rather than assuming every email app will manage aliases the same way.
- Create a distinct alias for the site or purpose. Use separate addresses for separate signups where the service allows it. This makes an address easier to identify if unwanted mail appears later. Avoid using an alias in a way that prevents you from receiving essential notices.
- Test a message before relying on it. Confirm that mail reaches your inbox. For a purchase or account requiring support, test whether a reply can be sent through the alias and check what address the recipient sees. Do not assume a forwarding-only address supports outbound mail.
- Keep a record of which alias belongs to which account. Use the provider’s controls or your own secure account notes to make the association clear. This helps you recognize an alias later and identify which signup may be responsible for a message.
- Disable or block only the affected alias if needed. If spam or suspicious mail comes through one address, use the service’s per-alias control if available. Before turning it off, consider whether it is tied to a purchase, subscription, login, or recovery process that may still need to send you mail.
- Secure the underlying inbox separately. Use a unique password and multi-factor authentication, and review the account’s recovery settings. The alias changes address exposure; it does not change the security of the inbox receiving the messages.
Common misconceptions and practical limits
“If I use a mask, nobody can connect the account to me.”
The mask only substitutes for the address. Information supplied elsewhere during signup, and activity associated with the account, can still identify you. Do not treat an alias as a substitute for limiting the personal information you share.
Best Value
“If spam reaches the alias, the mask failed.”
Forwarding an unwanted message does not necessarily mean the provider exposed your primary address. The alias may have been shared, guessed, or obtained through the recipient’s own practices; the available evidence here does not establish how a particular sender got it. The useful next step is to check which alias received the message and whether you can disable it.
“An alias prevents breaches.”
It can reduce the number of sites that directly hold your primary address, but it cannot prevent a site from being breached or prove that an alias prevents breaches. Mozilla’s Firefox Relay blog reported historical Firefox Monitor figures for more than 30 breaches in 2020: 348,343,465 email-address exposures and 270,147,637 password exposures. These are reported exposure counts from that historical period—not a current count of unique people and not evidence that aliases stop a breach.
What to remember
An email alias is most useful as an address-management and exposure-limiting tool. A separate address for each signup can keep your primary address from being handed directly to every sender and can make it easier to isolate an address that starts attracting unwanted mail. Choose a provider according to the actual need—especially reply support, per-alias controls, compatibility, limits, and privacy disclosures—and protect the receiving inbox with ordinary account-security measures. The relay is a useful boundary, not a guarantee of anonymity, safe email, or secure accounts.
