How Employers Can Help Workers Adjust to Daylight Saving Time

Employers can help workers through daylight saving time with advance sleep guidance, gradual schedule adjustments, and extra attention to demanding or safety-sensitive work.

Employers can make the daylight saving time (DST) transition easier and safer by preparing workers in advance, reinforcing adequate sleep, and considering temporary changes to safety-sensitive or demanding work. The clock change affects people differently; the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) says adjustment can take about a week, not that every worker will need exactly that long.

What employers can do before and after the time change

Give workers practical notice before the transition: sleep schedules may be disrupted for several days, and drowsiness can affect both work and commuting. NIOSH recommends raising awareness of health and safety risks and emphasizing adequate sleep. Its advice is preventive guidance, not a guarantee that any one measure will eliminate fatigue.

  • Communicate early. Remind staff to plan for the shift, protect sleep time, and pay attention to drowsiness on the job and on the way to work.
  • Review demanding work. Where operations allow, consider temporarily reducing or rescheduling critical, physically demanding, or mentally demanding tasks while workers adjust. NIOSH frames this as an option for employers to consider, not a universal requirement.
  • Reinforce safe decisions. Encourage workers who feel drowsy to use caution around machinery and when driving, and make fatigue a topic for supervisors in safety-sensitive roles.

These steps follow NIOSH’s 2022 employer guidance and its 2016 suggestions for helping workers adapt.

How workers can prepare for the spring and fall changes

Small schedule shifts before the clock change may make the transition less abrupt. The direction differs by season: spring clocks move ahead, while fall clocks move back.

Before spring-forward

In the days before the change, workers can move bedtime and other routine time cues earlier in small increments. NIOSH’s 2016 guidance suggests shifting by 15–20 minutes daily beginning about three days beforehand; the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) also advises gradual bedtime adjustment over two to three nights. These are approximate recommendations, not a precise schedule that everyone must follow.

After the spring change, NIOSH suggests seeking early morning sunlight and maintaining regular sleep and wake times. See its season-specific preparation advice and the AASM’s 2019 daylight saving advice.

Before fall-back

NIOSH’s 2016 guidance describes gradually moving routines later before the fall change. Workers can use small adjustments to bedtime and other daily cues rather than waiting until the night the clocks change.

Protect sleep and manage fatigue

AASM recommends that adults get at least seven hours of sleep before and after the transition. That is a sleep-duration recommendation, not a claim that seven hours will fully prevent the effects of a schedule change. NIOSH also advises keeping regular sleep and wake times and making the bedroom quiet, comfortable, and cool. As daylight shifts, light-blocking window coverings can help keep the sleeping area dark.

Fatigue can slow reaction times, reduce attention, limit short-term memory, and impair judgment, according to CDC/NIOSH’s fatigue guidance. Workers should be cautious with driving or machinery if they are drowsy. AASM advises particular caution with activities that require maximal alertness for at least seven days after a transition.

How long can adjustment take?

NIOSH says adjustment may take about one week, while AASM describes sleep and wake disruption lasting about five to seven days. These are approximate time frames, not a prediction for an individual worker: the duration varies, and the guidance does not establish that one coping strategy works best for everyone. For the general role of biological timing in sleep and work, NIOSH provides an overview of circadian rhythms.
