Foldable phone screens can stand up to ordinary use when you follow the instructions for your exact model, but their flexible inner displays need more care than conventional rigid glass. Keep the preinstalled protector in place, check for debris before closing the phone, use gentle cleaning, and treat water and dust ratings as model-specific limits—not promises of waterproofing or dustproofing.
What makes a foldable screen different?
A foldable phone’s inner display is a flexible assembly, not simply a sheet of rigid cover glass. Samsung describes its own foldable displays as a stack of protective film, a protective layer, and Ultra Thin Glass. That description applies to Samsung’s devices covered by its guidance; it should not be assumed to describe every brand or later model. Samsung’s explanation of its foldable display was last updated August 2, 2022.

A crease is not automatically damage
Samsung says a visible bend or wrinkle may occur around the center fold. The crease alone is not proof that the display is failing. A new crack, lines, spots, a change in touch or display function, or signs of impact are different concerns; Samsung warns that a heavy impact can cause spots, lines, or cracks. If those appear, consult the manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than trying to press the screen flat.

How durable are foldable screens in everyday use?
They are designed to fold and unfold, but the sources cited here do not establish a portfolio-wide real-world lifespan, failure rate, or number of folds before failure. There is no sound basis for promising that every foldable screen will last a particular number of years or fold cycles. Durability varies by model, how it is handled, and its condition.

The most preventable risks are concentrated pressure on the flexible surface and debris trapped between the two halves. For a meaningful comparison between two specific phones, check the maker’s information for the inner-display layers and protector service, the exact ingress rating and its limits, and local repair and warranty terms. Do not infer that a higher water rating says anything about screen scratch resistance, or use a rating from one model to describe another.
How to care for a foldable phone screen
Before closing the phone
Look over the inner display and hinge area before folding. Do not close the phone over a card, coin, key, crumb, grit, or sand. Samsung and Google warn that pressure or small objects can damage a flexible display. Use light, fingertip pressure
Use a fingertip for ordinary touch input. Avoid pressing hard, particularly near the fold, and do not touch the inner screen with fingernails, pens, keys, or other sharp objects. Google cautions that flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens; Samsung also warns against excessive pressure.
Leave the inner protector in place
The factory-installed inner-screen protector is part of the intended screen assembly. Do not peel it off or apply a third-party protector unless the manufacturer expressly approves it for your exact model. Samsung directs owners to authorized service for protector replacement, while Google warns against peeling the film back or installing a third-party protector. If it lifts or bubbles, stop picking at it and follow the model’s service instructions. Removing or replacing it yourself may also affect applicable warranty or care terms; check the terms for your country and device.

Clean gently and follow your model’s instructions
Start with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Google recommends a dry cloth for dust and smudges; Motorola advises using a dry, soft cloth for the Razr Fold screen and warns against spraying cleaner directly onto it. Approved products and procedures can differ by phone, so do not assume a cleaner permitted for one brand is safe for another. Turn the device off if its guide instructs you to, and keep moisture away from ports and other openings. Motorola’s Razr Fold hardware guidance describes its cleaning and liquid precautions.
Use a case for exterior protection, not as a screen safeguard
A case designed for your exact foldable model can help protect its exterior. Check that it fits the model and is compatible with the hinge. A case cannot prevent sharp pressure on the inner display or stop debris from being trapped when the phone closes. Samsung notes that case choices and fitting guidance vary by model in its foldable-phone care guidance.

What water and dust ratings do—and do not—tell you
Ingress ratings and their limits differ by model. They are not a promise that a phone is waterproof or dustproof, and protection may decline through wear, damage, repair, or disassembly. These manufacturer examples illustrate why you should check your own phone’s documentation:

Do not intentionally submerge a foldable phone based only on its rating. Avoid salt water and other liquids unless the exact model’s official instructions address them. If the phone gets wet, follow its manufacturer’s drying and charging guidance.
When to seek service
- The inner protector is lifting or bubbling: do not peel it or press it back down; check the manufacturer’s replacement route.
- The display develops a crack, lines, spots, or a functional change, especially after an impact: stop applying pressure and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
- You are unsure whether a cleaning product, liquid exposure, or replacement film is allowed: consult the exact model’s guide before proceeding.
Warranty and repair coverage depend on the device, country, and plan. For example, Motorola’s general US limited warranty lists exclusions that include various accidental and cosmetic damage, subject to applicable addenda and jurisdiction. Read the relevant warranty terms rather than assuming screen or liquid damage is covered.
