How Drone Delivery Works: From Warehouse to Doorstep

A commercial drone delivery combines order eligibility, package preparation, route planning, monitored flight and a hazard-checked handoff. Here is how the process works and what can stop it.

Drone delivery is a managed logistics service, not a customer piloting a drone: after an eligible order is placed, an operator prepares the package, assigns an aircraft, plans and monitors its flight, checks the delivery area, and either hands off the package or aborts when conditions are unsafe. The exact aircraft, route, handoff and safety procedures vary by operator, location and regulatory approval.

What happens between checkout and delivery

A commercial delivery flight is one link in a system that begins with an order and ends with the aircraft back at its operating site. The customer supplies a valid delivery address and, where the service requires it, selects a safe drop-off point. The operator handles dispatch, aircraft, airspace planning, flight oversight and package transfer. An app may make the service look like a simple shipping choice, but an order is deliverable only if the item, address, landing or drop zone, weather and operating permissions fit the service’s limits.

There is no single design for drone delivery. Some operators use a tether to lower a parcel while the aircraft hovers; others release or lower a package from a pod or hold position above the drop point. Aircraft may be multirotor, fixed-wing or hybrid vertical-takeoff-and-landing designs. A service’s advertised speed or range describes that operator’s system, not a standard capability shared by all delivery drones.

How a delivery proceeds, step by step

1. The customer places an eligible order

The service first checks whether the order and address are within its active delivery area and whether the item meets its handling and weight rules. In the customer workflow it describes, Amazon lets eligible customers select drone delivery at checkout and confirm a delivery point; item and weight restrictions are specific to that service and can change. A drone option therefore may appear for one address or item and not another. See Amazon’s customer workflow.

Delivery time estimates should be read as service claims rather than guarantees for every order. Amazon’s 2026 expansion page says orders can arrive as fast as 30 minutes, with most around 60 minutes after checkout. Those estimates apply to its service, depend on location and availability, and should not be generalized to other operators or delivery networks. Amazon’s expansion announcement describes the claim.

2. The delivery point is confirmed

A parcel needs a place where the operator can safely complete the handoff. A customer may choose a driveway, yard or another permitted location and, in Amazon’s described workflow, can update that choice. The mapped location is not itself proof that the spot will be clear when the aircraft arrives: people, pets, vehicles, overhead obstacles or other hazards can make a planned drop unsafe. The operator’s system and procedures determine whether to proceed, request a different point or cancel the handoff.

3. The order is prepared at a nearby operating site

Once the order qualifies, staff prepare it for flight and dispatch it from a delivery center or other launch location. The site may be integrated with a retailer’s existing operation or purpose-built for drone dispatch. Wing describes integrating its systems with existing business operations, illustrating that a drone service can be connected to a business’s order and fulfillment workflow rather than operating as an isolated aircraft fleet. Wing’s technology overview explains its approach.

Preparation has to match the package to the aircraft and handoff method. The parcel must be secured for flight and compatible with the operator’s capacity and delivery process. This is why commercial drone delivery is generally offered only for eligible orders, not as a universal substitute for a van carrying a mixed load.

4. Dispatch selects an aircraft and plans a route

The operator assigns an available aircraft and determines a route using operational and airspace information. Wing says its system automatically chooses routes and coordinates flights. Amazon says its MK30 follows a planned route while sensing its surroundings. Automated planning can coordinate a fleet and help an aircraft navigate, but it does not mean there is no operational control or that every route is identical. Routes depend on the operator’s approvals, aircraft capabilities and conditions at the time of flight.

For a sense of how different specifications can be, Amazon says its MK30 has a maximum operating range of 7.5 miles from its delivery center and a cruise speed of 60+ mph. Zipline states that its aircraft can travel up to 70 mph on a direct path. These are separate vendor-published figures, not directly comparable measurements or industry averages: one is Amazon’s stated cruise speed and range for the MK30; the other is Zipline’s stated speed on a direct path. Amazon’s MK30 information and Zipline’s technology page provide the claims and context.

5. The aircraft flies while operations are monitored

Delivery aircraft typically use substantial automation for navigation and flight tasks. Trained personnel monitor operations from the ground, with the degree of automation, staffing model and permitted scale depending on the operator’s authorizations. The customer does not control the aircraft. Monitoring is part of an operator-run service and helps the operation respond to abnormal conditions, but the precise staffing and intervention procedures are not uniform across companies.

In the United States, the regulatory distinction matters especially for flights beyond visual line of sight. The FAA says Part 135 certification is the only path for small drones to carry another party’s property for compensation beyond visual line of sight. Part 135 certification and operation-specific authority are central to commercial package delivery, but they do not automatically mean a service can fly everywhere in the country. The FAA’s page lists operator milestones and later authorizations through April 2025, including Wing’s first single-pilot authority in April 2019 and standard Part 135 authority in October 2019; UPS Flight Forward’s commercial medical-supply delivery in September 2019; Amazon’s start of commercial operations in August 2020; and Zipline becoming a standard Part 135 operator in June 2022. These are U.S. milestones, not evidence of permission in another country or at every U.S. address. The FAA’s package-delivery overview explains the framework and its listed authorizations.

6. The system checks the drop zone and transfers the package

Near the destination, the aircraft or operator’s system assesses whether the handoff area is suitable. The package transfer depends on the design. Wing describes lowering an order on a tether, allowing the aircraft to remain above the ground. Amazon says the MK30 descends above the selected point, checks for hazards and does not touch down. These are examples of distinct operator methods, not a universal delivery standard. Wing’s overview and Amazon’s technology page describe their respective systems.

For a customer, the practical result is that a delivery may be declined even after the drone has arrived nearby. A clear drop zone is part of the operation, not a minor convenience: the service must be able to transfer the parcel without exposing people, property or the aircraft to an avoidable hazard.

7. The aircraft returns or follows a contingency procedure

After a successful transfer, the aircraft returns to its base or another designated operating location. If it cannot complete the delivery safely, it may return without dropping the package. Amazon describes returning to base when a location is unsafe and using a Safe Contingent Landing when specified conditions call for an early, controlled landing; the operator then recovers and inspects the aircraft. These are Amazon-described procedures and should not be assumed to apply to every provider. Amazon’s technology page and its safety explanation describe those examples.

How delivery systems differ

Several engineering choices shape what a service can carry, where it can fly and how it hands over an order. The examples below show differences documented by the operators; they are not a complete ranking, and their speed figures describe different conditions.

What determines whether an address can receive drone delivery

Eligibility is a combination of customer, package, infrastructure and regulatory factors. A service may be unavailable even when a delivery site appears geographically close to a warehouse.

  • Service coverage: the address must fall inside an operator’s active delivery area and operating routes.
  • Package fit: the item must meet that operator’s size, weight and handling rules.
  • Safe handoff point: there must be an approved place to transfer the parcel, and it must remain free of hazards at delivery time.
  • Aircraft and dispatch availability: an appropriate aircraft and operating capacity have to be available for the order.
  • Local permissions: the operator must have authority for the route and operating conditions in that jurisdiction.

For U.S. readers, the FAA’s Part 135 framework addresses compensated carriage beyond visual line of sight, but authorization is operator- and operation-specific. The FAA’s list of certified operators and milestones is useful context, not a guarantee that any listed operator currently serves a particular neighborhood. Outside the United States, applicable aviation rules and service availability must be checked in the relevant country.

What can interrupt a delivery, and what happens next

Drone delivery depends on a safe route and a viable destination at the moment the aircraft flies, so an order can fail after checkout. The clearest documented example is an unsafe or obstructed delivery location: Amazon says its aircraft may return rather than release a parcel at a location it judges unsafe. Amazon also describes a controlled contingency landing for specified conditions, followed by recovery and aircraft inspection. Other operators may use different thresholds and responses, and the available descriptions do not establish a single industry-wide contingency procedure.

If the service cannot complete the flight or handoff, the customer should follow the operator’s order-status or support instructions. The exact refund, redelivery or rescheduling policy is service-specific; no universal customer remedy follows from the aircraft’s safety decision. A blocked delivery point is a reason to choose or confirm a suitable alternate location when the app allows it, rather than assuming that a pilot or customer can simply force the drone to release the package.

How to interpret speed and range claims

Speed, range and delivery time answer different questions. A cruise speed describes aircraft movement under a stated operating context; a maximum range describes a flight envelope or service claim; an advertised delivery time includes more than flight, such as order preparation and dispatch. The figures cited here are published by the operators, not independently established, market-wide performance statistics. Zipline’s up-to-70-mph direct-path claim, for example, should not be treated as equivalent to Amazon’s MK30 cruise-speed figure, and neither figure tells a reader how long an eligible order will take in a particular service area.

The practical question for a customer is whether the service currently offers drone delivery for the specific address and item, and what estimate and terms it shows at checkout. For retailers or healthcare providers evaluating integration, aircraft performance alone is also insufficient: the operation must fit order fulfillment, safe handoff, route approvals and monitoring requirements. Wing describes business-system integration, while the FAA’s operator framework shows that U.S. commercial beyond-visual-line-of-sight delivery involves formal authority rather than simply purchasing an aircraft.
