GOG games can be installed and played without GOG GALAXY for offline single-player use. Sign in to your GOG account in a browser, download a game’s offline backup installers, install it from those files, and launch the game executable. GALAXY is optional for that path, but multiplayer and other connected features may still need an internet connection or the client.
What “DRM-free” means for a GOG game
DRM is technology that controls access to or use of digital content. In GOG’s policy, “DRM-free” means a game’s offline single-player functions should not depend on GALAXY authentication, a running client, or an internet check. GOG’s developer guidance says the full single-player experience should work without a client or internet access.

That describes access to the game, not every service or feature bundled with it. An offline single-player campaign and an online multiplayer match have different requirements: the first can be designed to run locally, while the second depends on connecting to other players or a service. GOG’s developer materials likewise distinguish offline functions from online features, some of which may be unavailable offline or may require GALAXY.
GOG’s 2022 DRM-free commitment says, “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” That is the useful present-day policy statement. A GOG GALAXY presentation dated June 5, 2014, used the phrase “With GOG GALAXY, being online will always be optional”; it is a historical quotation, rather than a substitute for checking a particular game’s feature requirements.

In practical terms, DRM-free does not mean that a game has no account-based store or that the initial download happens anonymously. The browser download starts after you sign in to your GOG account and retrieve the installers from your library. The DRM-free distinction matters after that: for the supported offline single-player use, the installed game should not require the GALAXY client or an online authentication check just to run.

The table separates two decisions that are easy to conflate. You can avoid the client when installing and launching an offline single-player game, while choosing to use it for convenience or connected features. If a specific mode, achievement system, or online service matters to you, check that game’s own feature information rather than inferring support from the “DRM-free” label alone.
Think of the choice as a trade-off in workflow, not a different edition of the game. The browser route gives you setup files to install yourself and does not use GALAXY’s client workflow. GALAXY is the convenient option if you want its installation and update functions or features it supports. Neither choice changes the network needs of a multiplayer match or other online service.

The browser method requires an initial account session and a download. “Offline” refers to installing and playing from the files after you have retrieved them; it does not mean bypassing the store or obtaining the files without an account.
- Sign in through a browser. Open your GOG account and go to the game in your library.
- Choose the offline downloads. Select “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” and download the setup files required for the game.
- Run the setup application. Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts to install the game.
- Launch the installed game. Open the game’s installed directory and run the game executable. This is also a useful route when a shortcut you tried opens GALAXY instead.
Keep the steps distinct: downloading retrieves the files from your account; running the setup application installs the game; launching the executable starts the installed game. The offline installer is not itself the running game. If a desktop shortcut leads to GALAXY, opening the installed directory and starting the executable is the documented alternative path.

GOG Support recommends using a download manager if browser downloads are corrupted. That is an optional reliability measure for a damaged download, not a requirement for installing or playing without GALAXY. If the installer files are intact, the documented process is to run the setup application; if a browser download is corrupted, address the download rather than assuming the game itself requires the client. No particular paid download manager is needed or endorsed by this guidance.
Choose between GALAXY and the browser-download route
Neither route changes the central offline single-player policy. The practical difference is how you obtain, manage, and launch the game, and whether you want client-supported or online features.

GOG describes GALAXY as a way to install and update games and access features such as achievements and multiplayer. That makes it useful if you want those client-supported conveniences. It does not mean the client is mandatory for the game’s offline single-player mode.
Use offline installers when you want a client-independent install
- You want to install and launch offline single-player from downloaded setup files.
- You prefer to keep backup copies of the installers rather than relying only on the client workflow.
- You want to avoid a shortcut that opens GALAXY by launching the game executable from its installed directory.
The browser route is also a fit if you want to preserve the setup files for later installation. It does require you to retrieve them while signed in, and it does not provide the client workflow for installation and updates. GOG’s policy does not specify a particular update routine for the offline-installer route, so check the game’s library information when you need to obtain files again.
You can also use both approaches for different purposes: GOG’s policy makes GALAXY optional for offline single-player, while the client remains useful for the features and conveniences it supports. Keep installer backups if preservation matters to you
GOG says users can make backup copies of downloaded games. Keeping the installer files is optional; it is a preservation choice, not a prerequisite for playing a game you have already installed. An external drive is one possible place to keep those files. GOG does not prescribe a storage medium or capacity, so choose based on the size of the installers and how you intend to store them.

You do not need to buy storage hardware just to install or play without GALAXY. An external drive or SSD is simply one possible place for optional backups, and the right capacity depends on the installers you choose to keep. Limits and practical caveats
Offline does not include services that need a network
Multiplayer, leaderboards, and online statistics cannot function as offline services because they depend on connectivity. Some other features may also be tied to GALAXY. DRM-free should therefore be read as a statement about client-independent offline single-player access, not a blanket promise about every menu item or mode.
A game can therefore start and play its offline campaign without GALAXY while still having menus, rewards, statistics, or multiplayer functions that do not work as expected when disconnected. GOG’s developer introduction specifically cautions that some features, including achievements, may require GALAXY. If one particular feature is the reason you are deciding whether to install the client, verify that feature for the individual game instead of relying on a general DRM-free description.

GOG’s policy is not a guarantee about every peripheral feature or setup
GOG says its QA process checks releases for DRM and expects single-player aspects to work without GALAXY or an internet connection. That describes GOG’s stated policy and QA approach; it does not establish that every peripheral feature will work offline or that every future system configuration will behave identically. For a feature you specifically need, use the individual game’s information and distinguish its offline single-player content from online or client-supported functions.
