No—Arlo cameras do not universally need a subscription to keep working. On supported models, live streaming, push notifications, two-way audio and local recording can remain available after a trial ends. A plan is generally needed for cloud Video History and features such as Activity Zones. Whether you can record locally without paying depends on the camera and compatible hub or base station; plan features and retention also vary by region.
What changes when an Arlo trial or subscription ends?
It helps to separate three things that are often bundled together in the word “recording”: seeing a camera live, receiving an alert, and having a saved video clip to review later. A camera can still provide live viewing or notify you about activity without saving an event clip to Arlo’s cloud. A push notification is not, by itself, proof that a cloud recording exists.

Arlo says users can continue without a service plan when a trial ends. Its trial-end support article, last updated 15 September 2026, lists live streaming, push notifications and two-way audio among functions that may remain, along with local storage recording on supported devices. The qualification matters: Arlo also flags that local recording and some other functions are not available on every device. See Arlo’s trial-end feature list for the current model-specific caveats.
The clearest general dividing line is cloud history. Arlo identifies Video History and Activity Zones as unavailable without a plan or trial. If your priority is checking a live feed and receiving supported notifications, you may be able to use a camera without a recurring plan. If you want to review cloud-saved clips after an event, confirm that a plan in your region covers the camera and the retention period you need.

Which features can remain without a plan?
Arlo’s wording is “may” remain rather than a blanket promise for every camera. Use this as a starting point, then verify your exact camera and hub combination in Arlo’s current documentation.
- Live streaming: Listed as an available function after a trial ends.
- Push notifications: May continue, but receiving an alert does not mean a clip is being saved to cloud Video History.
- Two-way audio: Listed among the functions that can remain.
- Local recording: Available only on supported devices, and most cameras that use it require an Arlo SmartHub or base station.
- Activity Zones and cloud Video History: Arlo says these are unavailable without a plan or trial.
- Some tracking features: Availability depends on the model; the Essential Pan Tilt exception is particularly important.
These distinctions are useful when deciding whether “subscription-free” meets your needs. If you need a saved recording, ask where it will be stored and how you will retrieve it—not simply whether the camera can send an alert.

Plan names and bundles are not identical worldwide. The following comparison reflects Arlo’s Europe/UK support page, last updated 30 March 2026; it is not a global price list or promise of availability in every country. Arlo’s listed cloud resolutions and retention periods are plan specifications for that region. Check the plan selector for your location before choosing a tier. “Up to” is important: the table describes the plan’s stated ceiling, not a guarantee that every camera records at that resolution. Camera compatibility and local terms still apply. Likewise, unlimited cameras on the listed Plus and Pro tiers refers to one location under the Europe/UK offer, not unlimited locations or a worldwide account entitlement.
Arlo’s Europe/UK documentation also describes certain older models—including Pro, Pro 2, Q/Q+, Go, Baby and original Wire-Free—as retaining seven-day free cloud recording in up to 1080p, with a five-camera maximum. Treat that as a documented legacy exception for the listed group, not as the standard no-plan offer for newer cameras or every device carrying an Arlo name.
The Europe/UK page does not establish a price applicable to all readers. Subscription names, available features, camera limits, retention and country eligibility can change. Use the current plan information for your own country rather than converting a regional offer into a general promise.

Can Arlo cameras record locally without a subscription?
Some supported Arlo devices can record to local storage without relying on cloud Video History, but local recording is a separate capability with compatibility requirements. Arlo says most cameras need a SmartHub or base station for local storage. “Most” does not mean every camera, and a hub that works with one camera family should not be assumed to work with another.
For the Ultra configuration, Arlo’s Ultra User Manual describes local storage through the Ultra SmartHub using a microSD card, which is sold separately. That specific example should not be generalized into a claim that every Arlo camera records to microSD, or that every SmartHub uses the same medium.
Check compatibility before buying or canceling
- Identify the exact camera model. Do not rely on a family name alone; model-specific features and limits differ.
- Check whether that model supports local recording. Arlo’s general no-plan feature list is conditional, so confirm support in current documentation for the camera.
- Verify the required hub or base station. Most cameras need one for local recording, but compatibility depends on the camera and the hub/base-station model.
- Confirm the storage medium and whether it is included. The Ultra manual specifies a separately sold microSD card for its SmartHub setup; that is a configuration-specific fact.
- Decide whether local clips meet your need. Local storage is not Arlo cloud Video History. If cloud access or a particular retention period is essential, check the relevant local plan terms instead.
Do not purchase a hub or storage card on the assumption that it will enable recording on any Arlo camera. The reliable answer comes from matching the exact camera, hub or base station, and storage medium in the model-specific documentation.

Which model-specific exceptions should you know about?
Arlo’s trial-end page lists Auto Zoom & Tracking among features that may be available without a plan, but also says tracking is not available on all devices. In particular, Auto Zoom & Tracking is unavailable on Essential Pan Tilt cameras. Those cameras use Auto Track instead, and Arlo says Auto Track requires a trial or subscription.
This is a useful example of why a feature name alone is not enough to predict no-plan behavior: two cameras may offer related tracking functions under different names and subscription conditions. Check the exact model rather than assuming that a feature listed for some devices applies across the line.

Is 24/7 recording included with an ordinary plan?
Not by implication. Arlo describes Continuous Video Recording as a separate option for some cameras, with the camera plugged into AC power and a CVR plan required for each camera. A Secure cloud plan’s event-clip resolution and retention details do not establish that continuous recording is included. If you need uninterrupted cloud footage, verify both camera eligibility and the separate CVR terms for your market.
How to decide whether to pay
Start with the footage and functions you actually need, then check camera compatibility before selecting a plan or storage hardware.
- Choose no plan as a possibility if live viewing and supported notifications are sufficient, and you have confirmed which no-plan features your model retains.
- Investigate local storage if you want recordings but do not need Arlo cloud Video History. Confirm support, hub/base station, and storage requirements for your exact model.
- Look at a paid Secure tier if cloud-saved event clips, longer history, cloud Activity Zones, or the listed recognition and detection features matter to you. Compare the region-specific resolution, retention, camera allowance and feature bundle.
- Check the camera count and location rule against the plan. The Europe/UK page specifies a one-location basis for its multi-camera tiers, with different stated allowances by tier.
- Check CVR separately if the requirement is continuous cloud recording rather than event clips or local recording.
- Recheck regional terms before subscribing or relying on a legacy allowance. A plan description for Europe/UK does not establish what is offered in another country.
In short, the decision is not simply “camera works” versus “camera stops.” The practical question is whether your model’s remaining no-plan functions, any compatible local recording route, and the cloud features in your region match how you want to use the camera.
