Drifting buoys track ocean currents by reporting their changing positions, not by measuring water speed in isolation. Scientists compare each position with the next to estimate the buoy’s movement; a submerged drogue helps that movement represent the flow of water below the surface. Buoys equipped with weather sensors also send observations such as sea-surface temperature or sea-level pressure to forecasting and ocean-monitoring systems.

How a drifting buoy measures current

A satellite-tracked surface drifter has a float at the surface and a drogue—also called a sea anchor—tethered below it. The float carries batteries, a transmitter and sensors. It sends its location through satellites, and scientists use the sequence of reported positions to estimate how quickly and in what direction the drifter moved. That movement serves as an observation of near-surface ocean current flow. NOAA’s Global Drifter Program describes this approach.

Position over time becomes velocity

A single location says where the buoy was, not how fast the water was moving. To estimate velocity, a scientist needs at least two positions and the elapsed time between them. The change in position divided by that time gives an average velocity for the interval. For example, if a drifter’s reported positions were 10 kilometres apart six hours apart, the average speed along that displacement would be about 1.7 kilometres per hour. This is an illustrative calculation, not a claim about a particular drifter or its data.

The estimate describes the drifter’s movement between observations; it is not a direct reading of every water parcel’s speed, nor does it necessarily capture short-lived changes between reports. The path can also be affected by the instrument’s configuration and condition. That is why a track must be interpreted alongside details such as drogue status, observation timing and data quality rather than treated as a perfect map of the current everywhere around it.

Why the drogue matters

The drogue is designed to couple the surface float to water movement at its submerged depth, reducing the extent to which the float is carried by wind and waves at the surface. NOAA’s common Global Drifter Program specification places the drogue’s centre at 15 metres depth; a separate program overview describes a drogue extending approximately 20 metres. These descriptions refer to program materials, not a universal dimension for every drifter design. NOAA’s program overview and FAQ provide the respective details.

When a drogue is attached, the instrument is intended to follow current flow at the drogue depth. If the drogue is lost, wind and waves exert more influence on the surface float. Its subsequent path is then less representative of the targeted current layer, so a drogue-lost track should not be read as a clean current measurement. NOAA explains the importance of drogue status.

What the buoy measures—and what depends on its sensors

Location and sea-surface temperature are core observations for these drifters. Other instruments may also record sea-level pressure, salinity, wind speed and direction, or waves. The additional measurements depend on the particular buoy’s sensor package; a track alone does not establish that every one of these variables was measured. NOAA describes the possible measurements and data relay in its Global Drifter Program overview and FAQ.

From observation to forecast systems

The float transmits observations through satellites, which relay them to land-based systems. NOAA says real-time drifter observations are distributed through the Global Telecommunication System for use in forecasting and ocean-state estimation. NOAA’s real-time data page explains access to drifter data and graphs.

These observations give forecasting and ocean-monitoring systems measurements from the ocean itself. A temperature reading, for example, is a measurement at the buoy’s location and observation time—not a complete description of the surrounding sea. Where a buoy has a pressure sensor, that observation can contribute information about sea-level pressure; where it lacks one, the track cannot supply that variable. The distinction between what an instrument actually records and what a model estimates is important when interpreting any map or data product.

Drifters are not moored buoys

A drifter is not anchored to the ocean bottom: it moves with the water and travels along a changing trajectory. A moored buoy, by contrast, is held in a fixed area by a mooring. The two kinds of instrument therefore answer different observational questions. A drifter’s changing location is central to estimating movement; a moored instrument provides measurements at a station. NOAA’s program overview describes the drifting design.

Why drifting-buoy observations are useful

Following currents and eddies

Repeated positions make it possible to follow a drifter’s route and observe how it moves through currents and eddies. A trajectory shows the path of that instrument over its observation period; it should not be mistaken for a complete picture of all currents in a region. One buoy samples one moving route, and the observations have to be interpreted in the context of the instrument and the period represented. NOAA’s 2022 Adopt-a-Drifter lesson describes tracking drifters to study currents and eddies.

Checking other observations and supporting models

Drifter data can also be used to ground-truth satellite data and inform climate and weather models, according to that NOAA lesson. Ground-truthing means comparing satellite-derived information with observations made by instruments in the ocean. The observations are useful inputs, but they are not forecasts by themselves: forecasting and ocean-state estimation systems combine data with other information and analysis.

How to explore buoy tracks and observations

NOAA provides public resources for viewing drifter locations, trajectories and available measurements. The Adopt a Drifter dashboard can show sea-surface temperature and sea-level pressure when the particular buoy carries the relevant sensor. It identifies instruments by WMO number and provides links to downloadable data. Open NOAA’s Adopt a Drifter dashboard to examine the available tracks; its display depends on the instrument and data shown.

  1. Open the dashboard. Start at the NOAA Adopt a Drifter dashboard.
  2. Select or locate a drifter. Use the displayed buoy information and WMO number to identify an instrument. Record the identifier if you plan to compare its dashboard view with a downloadable record.
  3. Read the track as a sequence. Follow the locations in time order. A line on a map represents the buoy’s route over the represented period; the speed estimate comes from position change over elapsed time, not from the line alone.
  4. Check which observations are available. Look for the variables actually associated with that instrument. Do not assume pressure, salinity, wind or wave measurements exist just because some drifters carry those sensors.
  5. Use the data link for closer inspection. The dashboard links to downloadable data. For access and plotting information on real-time observations, consult NOAA’s Real Time Drifter Data and Graphs page.

How to compare two tracks responsibly

Two trajectories are comparable only to the extent that the instruments, observation periods and data treatments are understood. A longer or more curved line does not automatically mean a stronger current: the tracks may cover different time spans, represent different drogue conditions, or be based on observations sampled or processed differently. Before drawing conclusions, check the following:

  • Drogue status and depth: determine whether the drogue was attached and what depth the instrument was designed to sample. A drogue-lost segment is more affected by wind and waves than a segment with the drogue attached.
  • Observation period and sampling interval: establish the dates and spacing of the locations being compared. Dataset-specific sampling details should be verified in the selected data product rather than assumed from another track.
  • Track and location quality: consult any quality information supplied with the dataset. A plotted route alone does not tell you whether every reported position has the same quality.
  • Sensor package: compare like with like only for variables that both instruments actually measured. Location and sea-surface temperature are core drifter observations; other variables depend on the buoy.
  • Data status and processing: distinguish real-time displays from quality-controlled or interpolated records where the selected product identifies them. Processing and flags affect how a track should be interpreted.

These checks follow the distinctions NOAA makes about drifter configuration and sensor options; the exact sampling interval, quality flags and processing details are dataset-specific. Consult the documentation accompanying the particular data product before making a precise comparison. NOAA’s real-time data resource and dashboard are useful starting points, but the record’s own metadata is the authority for its details.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Treating the buoy as a current meter that directly senses water speed: the basic current estimate comes from the buoy’s position change over time.
  • Ignoring a lost drogue: once the drogue is gone, the float can be more strongly affected by wind and waves, changing what its path represents.
  • Assuming every buoy has every sensor: sea-level pressure, salinity, wind and wave observations are optional capabilities, not guaranteed fields in every record.
  • Equating a track with the whole current field: a trajectory describes one instrument’s route, not every flow in the surrounding region.
  • Comparing plotted lines without checking their records: observation timing, location quality, sensor configuration and data processing can all differ between products.

For classroom use, NOAA’s 2022 lesson on tracking a drifter introduces trajectory-based exploration, while the dashboard and real-time resources let readers inspect actual tracks and available observations.
