You create a Main Pawn who travels with you, fill your party with hired support Pawns, and use contextual commands to guide their behavior. When connected, other players can hire your Main Pawn, and you can hire theirs; hiring is limited to players on the same platform.
How the party and Pawn roles fit together
Your Main Pawn is your continuing companion. Support Pawns are hired party members, so your group can combine the Arisen’s vocation with the skills of up to three Pawns. The game can also be played offline with a party of up to four characters; online connectivity is not required for a full party. Capcom’s FAQ

Choose companions around the work your group needs rather than assuming there is one best composition. Capcom’s manual describes Fighters as close-range sword-and-shield combatants, Mages as providers of healing, enchantments and ranged magic, Archers as ranged attackers, and Thieves as fast close-combat specialists. What Pawn inclinations change
An inclination guides tendencies: it influences behavior, speech and the actions a Pawn is likely to take, but it is not a guaranteed script or a simple damage modifier. Capcom says Pawns remain faithful to the Arisen regardless of inclination. The four inclinations are:

You can change your Main Pawn’s inclination using Art of Metamorphosis, available at the Pawn Guild, or by speaking with the Pawn at a campsite while carrying the relevant Rift Incense, according to Capcom’s FAQ. The official manual explains the inclination tendencies.
What commands do
Pawn commands are situational directions, not a complete manual override. Their effect can differ between combat and exploration, so observe how Pawns respond in context.

- Go: in combat, tells Pawns to spread out. During exploration, it prompts nearby interactions—such as checking chests, mechanisms or gathering spots—in the indicated direction.
- To me: calls Pawns back to the Arisen; in combat, they fight nearby.
- Wait: keeps Pawns in place. During combat, they stop attacking and focus on indirect aid.
- Help: prioritizes support, healing and recovery.
- Explore: hold Go to direct Pawns to proactively gather materials.
- High five: hold To me to prompt this action.

How Pawn quests and rewards work
At a Riftstone, you can assign your Main Pawn a Pawn quest for an Arisen who hires them to complete beyond the Rift. The task may ask the other player to retrieve an item, and you choose a reward—specific items or gold. Items are taken from your inventory and gold is deducted from your funds when you set the reward. Capcom describes Pawn quests as a way to obtain items and Pawn badges; they are an incentive, not a guarantee that another player will hire the Pawn or finish the task. What online Pawn sharing does—and does not do
Online features let you hire Pawns shared by friends or other players, let others hire and rate your Main Pawn, and leave a gift with a support Pawn when dismissing them. Capcom’s FAQ explicitly says the game does not support online multiplayer. Pawn sharing is asynchronous, not live co-op, and Pawns can only be hired by players on the same platform. Making your Main Pawn available to other players
Rest at an inn while connected to the network to upload your Main Pawn’s information. Capcom notes that it can take some time for updated information to appear to other players.

Turning network features on
If you started the game offline, check System > Options > Network and turn on Network Features. This menu path and the upload guidance are in Capcom’s FAQ.
Reviving a downed Pawn
When a Pawn’s Health reaches zero, they become immobile. Approach and touch them to revive them; if several Pawns nearby are immobile, they can be revived together. A revived Pawn’s maximum Health is set to the Arisen’s remaining Health. If you leave an immobile Pawn too long, they become forfeit and leave the party.
