Payments to enrolled recipients typically arrive within minutes, but they are intended for people you know and trust—not purchases where you need buyer protection.
How does Zelle work with Wells Fargo?
Zelle lets you send or receive money from within Wells Fargo’s online banking or mobile app. To enroll, you connect an email address or U.S. mobile number to an eligible Wells Fargo deposit account. That identifier is how other people address payments to you, and incoming money goes to the account you selected. Wells Fargo’s Zelle FAQ explains enrollment, timing, fees, and limits.

Both parties need to use Zelle through a participating U.S. bank or credit union. Wells Fargo says users must be enrolled through a participating financial institution; its FAQ gives March 31, 2025, as the date by which users needed to be enrolled that way.

How do I send or request money?
- In Wells Fargo Online or the app, open Send Money with Zelle and choose Send or Request.
- Select a saved contact or enter the recipient’s email address or U.S. mobile number. Eligible small-business use may also allow a Zelle tag; you can also scan a Zelle QR code where available.
- Choose the relevant account or identifier, enter the amount, and review the recipient and payment details carefully.
- Submit the payment or request.
Check the email address, mobile number, or other recipient information before sending. A typo can route money to someone else, and a completed payment to an enrolled recipient generally cannot be stopped.
How do I receive money through Zelle in my Wells Fargo account?
Enroll an email address or U.S. mobile number and link it to the Wells Fargo deposit account where you want the funds deposited. Give the sender that exact enrolled identifier. Wells Fargo says it does not impose a limit on how much a customer can receive, although the sender’s bank or credit union may limit what the sender can send.
If the recipient has not enrolled
The recipient must enroll using the same email address or U.S. mobile number the sender used. Wells Fargo gives the recipient 14 days to enroll; if they do not, the payment is returned. While the transfer is pending because the recipient has not enrolled, the sender may be able to cancel it.

Is Zelle through Wells Fargo safe for purchases?
Wells Fargo recommends using Zelle only with people you know and trust, including eligible small businesses. Zelle does not provide purchase protection for a transaction if an item fails to arrive or is not as described. Wells Fargo states: “Neither Wells Fargo nor Zelle offers purchase protection for payments made with Zelle.” That makes Zelle a poor fit for paying an unfamiliar seller when you need a way to dispute a purchase.
Wells Fargo distinguishes a purchase dispute from an unauthorized payment: its FAQ says customers are protected in the unlikely event an unauthorized user accesses their account and initiates a payment through Wells Fargo Online or the mobile app. That is not the same as reimbursement for a payment you authorized to a scammer. If you believe you have been scammed, Wells Fargo directs customers to Online Banking Customer Service at 1-800-956-4442, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Qualifying impostor scams may be eligible for reimbursement, depending on the case.
When should I use another payment method?
Before paying, consider whether you know and trust the recipient, whether you need purchase protection or a dispute process, how quickly the money needs to arrive, and whether the sender’s Wells Fargo limit and the recipient’s financial institution allow the transfer. For a purchase from an unfamiliar seller, choose a payment method with protections appropriate to the transaction rather than relying on Zelle.
