SpaceX’s Starship launch system works as a two-stage rocket: Super Heavy, the booster, lifts the stack from the pad; Starship, the spacecraft and upper stage, lights its engines as the stages separate and continues into space. Both stages are designed to return for reuse, though that remains an evolving capability rather than routine service for every mission.
What are Starship and Super Heavy?
“Starship” can refer to the complete launch system or, more specifically, the upper-stage spacecraft. Super Heavy is the first-stage booster beneath it. SpaceX describes the combined system as designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond; those destinations describe intended uses, not proof that every mission capability is operational.

| Stage | Role | Published engine configuration | Intended return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Heavy | First-stage booster; supplies the initial lift from the pad | 33 Raptor engines | Return to the launch site for a catch by the launch tower |
| Starship | Spacecraft and upper stage; continues the flight after separation | Six Raptor engines: three standard and three vacuum variants | Survive atmospheric reentry and return for catch and reuse, or splash down |
Engine counts and descriptions in this table are SpaceX’s published specifications, not independent measurements. SpaceX describes Raptor as a reusable, methane-oxygen staged-combustion engine; its vehicle page says the engines burn sub-cooled liquid methane and liquid oxygen. SpaceX Starship vehicle overview
How does a Starship launch work?
- Super Heavy lifts the stack. Its 33 Raptor engines provide the initial thrust, carrying both the booster and Starship upward from the launch pad.
- Starship starts its engines during separation. In the hot-staging sequence, Starship ignites its engines while it is separating from Super Heavy. This lets the upper stage begin powering its continued ascent.
- The stages part. Super Heavy and Starship separate; the booster’s launch role ends, while Starship continues upward as the spacecraft and upper stage.
SpaceX’s account of Flight 13 describes this hot-staging sequence for the V3 vehicles. The company reported that all 33 Raptor 3 engines ignited for ascent, followed by hot-staging. That is SpaceX’s report of a specific test, not an independent reliability assessment. SpaceX updates

What does hot-staging mean?
In hot-staging, the upper stage ignites its engines as it separates from the booster, rather than waiting until separation is complete to start its powered flight. Here, Starship lights its engines during the transition and carries on upward. It is the stage-separation method; it does not mean the booster continues to propel Starship throughout the rest of its ascent.
How are the two stages meant to be recovered?
Super Heavy: return and tower catch
SpaceX’s design calls for Super Heavy to return to the launch site and be caught by the launch tower. The booster’s recovery is part of the system’s reuse plan, but a design goal or a demonstrated test milestone does not establish that every booster recovery or rapid turnaround is routine operational service.

Starship: reentry and return
Starship is designed to survive atmospheric reentry, perform a deorbit burn and then either splash down or return for a catch and reuse, depending on the mission. These are intended recovery paths and developing test capabilities—not evidence that Starship is already routinely recovered and reused after every flight.

The system’s architecture and published engine counts explain how it is intended to launch: a booster provides the initial lift, hot-staging transfers the flight to the upper stage, and both stages are designed with recovery in mind. SpaceX’s stated aims include missions to orbit, the Moon and Mars, but intended destinations and full reusability should not be mistaken for routinely demonstrated operational capability. The specifications and test details here are SpaceX’s own statements; they are not independent performance or safety evaluations.
