Starsand Island Crafting and Resource Guide: What to Gather and Keep

On an early gathering trip in Starsand Island, prioritize softwood, stone, and plant fiber, and keep a reserve of materials needed for visible recipes, quests, and upgrades. There is no established universal stack count: check the current in-game requirement before selling or spending down a supply, especially when it is scarce or difficult to replace.

What to gather first

After the introductory Worktable becomes available, an unofficial beginner guide recommends collecting these basic materials near the farm:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Softwood: Keep it rather than selling it early. The beginner guide identifies it as a material used later for stations, upgrades, furniture, and construction, but does not establish a quantity to reserve. Beginner guide
  • Stone and plant fiber: Gather an initial working stock. Before selling or spending the last of either, check active recipes and quests for requirements. The guide gives no all-purpose reserve amounts. Beginner guide
  • Food or forage: Bring recovery items if you intend to gather for a longer stretch. The beginner guide says food restores stamina; treat that as guide advice, not a measured guarantee for every food item. Beginner guide

Use the same principle for other materials: gather what supports an immediate goal, then protect any batch tied to a recipe or progression requirement you can see in-game.

How to decide what to keep

Before selling, crafting, or leaving a material behind, weigh its current purpose against the cost of getting more. A practical priority order is:

  1. Meet an accepted quest or visible recipe. Set aside the amount the game currently shows, rather than relying on a remembered or assumed recipe.
  2. Reserve materials for the next tool or station upgrade. Crafting progression is described by an unofficial fan wiki as unlocking additional worktables, stations, and recipes. Requirements can vary with the current game build, so verify them in-game. Crafting profession guide
  3. Protect scarce or costly-to-replace materials. Consider availability where you are, as well as the stamina and bag space another trip would use. These are practical decision factors, not published game metrics.
  4. Sell or spend surplus only after those checks. Keep a working stock for ordinary crafting, but do not treat an arbitrary number of stacks as a universal rule.

When no upcoming requirement is visible, the sources do not establish a fixed reserve target. Recheck recipes and quest requests as progression opens new options.

When to upgrade mining tools

An unofficial ore guide describes access to ore types as dependent on pickaxe tier and links upgrades to Crafting progression. That makes an upgrade useful when it opens an ore needed for a recipe, station, quest, or other specific goal—not simply because an upgrade is available. Ore guide

Check the current in-game upgrade and recipe requirements before planning a trip around a particular ore. The fan guide does not establish an authoritative, current set of routes, yields, processing ratios, or node schedules, so those details should not be treated as guaranteed.

Make gathering trips last longer

Stamina and carrying capacity affect how much you can bring back in one outing. The beginner guide recommends using food to restore stamina and expanding bag capacity through crafting progression. These are its recommendations, not independently measured performance claims. Beginner guide

  • Carry recovery items when a stamina limit would otherwise cut a trip short.
  • Use available bag upgrades if extra capacity helps you stay out longer; check their current unlock requirements in-game.
  • Give scarce, goal-specific materials priority when bag space is tight, rather than filling it with resources you can readily replace.

How crafting progression changes your priorities

The unofficial Crafting profession page says the profession covers tools, stations, furniture, and building materials, and that it gates access to other professions. It describes five tiers—Apprentice, Junior, Intermediate, Senior, and Expert—with progression opening additional worktables, stations, and recipes. These are fan-wiki descriptions; use the current game’s profession screen to confirm the unlock sequence and requirements. Crafting profession guide

That progression is why basic stocks can matter beyond the first recipes: a material may be needed again for later crafting or construction. But no source here supplies a current, authoritative item-by-item reserve list, so let visible requirements—not a fixed blanket quota—determine what you protect.

What is established about the game

Steam lists Seed Sparkle Lab as Starsand Island’s developer and publisher. Its store listing gives August 18, 2026 as the release date and February 11, 2026 as the Early Access start date; store information can change. Starsand Island on Steam

The specific gathering and mining recommendations above come from unofficial fan guides rather than official item-by-item documentation. Because recipes and progression may change, use the current in-game recipe, quest, and upgrade screens as the deciding reference when committing a limited supply.
