How Does SpaceX Starship Reach Orbit, and What Happens After Launch?

Starship reaches orbit through a sequence of handoffs: the Super Heavy booster lifts the two-stage vehicle, Starship ignites its engines before the stages separate in a maneuver called hot staging, and the spacecraft continues accelerating toward orbital speed. Once in orbit, it can carry out mission-specific tasks, then use a deorbit burn and atmospheric descent to return. The latest reported orbital milestone, Flight 14 in September 2026, reached orbit and deployed satellites but ended early, with the spacecraft tipping over and catching fire after its Pacific splashdown.

What are the two parts of the Starship launch vehicle?

The integrated vehicle has two stages. Super Heavy is the booster below; Starship is the upper stage and spacecraft. The FAA describes both stages as powered by Raptor engines that burn liquid oxygen and liquid methane. The agency’s regulatory overview also describes Boca Chica preflight operations such as rehearsals and static-fire testing. FAA: Starship/Super Heavy

Those are the roles in the launch stack, not a guarantee that every flight uses identical hardware or a fixed operating profile. NASA’s July 2026 update notes that Starship hardware and testing continue to evolve. NASA: NASA, SpaceX Advance Wind Tunnel Tests for Starship Rocket

How does Starship get from launch to orbit?

1. Super Heavy provides the initial push

At liftoff, the booster supplies the first major push, lifting the combined vehicle and accelerating it upward. The FAA’s Boca Chica description covers preparations such as launch rehearsals and static-fire tests; these are part of launch operations, not steps that happen after liftoff.

2. Starship ignites before separation

Starship’s upper-stage engines start while the booster engines are still operating. The stages then separate as the vehicle continues accelerating, a method called hot staging. NASA explains that because acceleration does not pause during separation, the maneuver is more efficient than traditional stage separation. The trade-off is a challenging plume-flow environment between the stages: NASA Marshall researchers used computational fluid dynamics to study how the exhaust behaves, and NASA reports that the simulations supported SpaceX’s hot-staging design. NASA Advanced Supercomputing: NASA@SC24: SpaceX Starship Hot Staging – From Concept to Flight

NASA’s project account describes meshes with more than 500 million cells and about 40 million CPU hours on the Pleiades supercomputer. These figures describe the computational study, not Starship’s launch performance.

3. The stages go on separate paths

After separation, Super Heavy and Starship have different jobs. The booster may be directed toward a landing at the launch site or a Gulf platform, according to the FAA’s overview. SpaceX’s Flight 14 objectives instead specified a booster landing burn at an offshore Gulf landing point. A planned recovery location or maneuver is not proof that a booster was recovered intact; recovery plans vary by flight. FAA: Starship/Super Heavy · SpaceX: Starship Flight 14

4. Starship continues accelerating toward orbital insertion

The spacecraft must build horizontal speed as well as gain altitude: reaching a high point above Earth alone is not orbit. After hot staging, Starship continues its ascent and, for a mission designed to do so, carries out an orbital-insertion maneuver. SpaceX listed that maneuver as a Flight 14 objective. No single time from liftoff to orbit applies to every Starship flight; the flight, vehicle, and mission profile matter.

What does Starship do in orbit?

Orbital tasks depend on the mission. SpaceX’s Flight 14 objectives included orbital insertion and deployment of 26 Starlink V3 satellites. The Associated Press later reported that the vehicle reached orbit and deployed 26 satellites. SpaceX: Starship Flight 14 · Associated Press, September 28, 2026

That result should not be generalized to every Starship mission. NASA’s account of the March 2024 Flight 3, for example, says it reached its expected orbit, completed a full-duration ascent burn, and demonstrated internal cryogenic propellant transfer. Those were Flight 3 results, not evidence that Flight 14 or all later vehicles performed the same tests. NASA, March 14, 2024: NASA Artemis Mission Progresses with SpaceX Starship Test Flight

How does Starship return after its orbital work?

For a planned return, the spacecraft performs a deorbit burn to leave orbit, then descends through the atmosphere toward its intended landing or splashdown area. Flight 14’s stated objectives included a deorbit burn and controlled reentry, descent, and Pacific splashdown. The planned sequence describes the goal; the actual outcome of that test flight was different from its roughly ten-hour, six-lap plan. SpaceX: Starship Flight 14

What happened on Flight 14?

According to the Associated Press, an engine shut down prematurely during ascent, and flight controllers chose to end the mission early. Starship had reached orbit and deployed the 26 satellites, but it returned to Earth after about three hours rather than completing the planned roughly ten-hour, six-lap flight. It reentered over the Pacific and splashed down north of Hawaii; after splashdown it tipped over and caught fire. That is an early test-flight return, not an intact recovery or the intended routine result of every mission. Associated Press, September 28, 2026

How to compare Starship flights

A flight can achieve an important milestone without completing every planned objective or recovering both stages. When comparing missions, separate what the flight set out to do from what actually happened, and track the booster and spacecraft independently.

  • Did Starship reach orbital insertion?
  • Was a payload deployed?
  • What did Super Heavy do after staging, and where did it land or come down?
  • Did Starship perform a deorbit burn?
  • How long was the planned flight compared with the actual time in flight?
  • Where did each stage end up, and in what condition?
