Google Maps shows fuel prices as recently updated, last-known values—not guaranteed quotes for what you will pay at the pump. Google documents an update timestamp for fuel-price records, but does not publish a universal explanation of where every Maps price comes from or a numerical accuracy rate. Check the timestamp when it is available, and verify locally if a small price difference could change your decision.
How does Google Maps know gas prices?
Google’s Places API represents a station’s fuel information as its most recent fuel data. For each fuel type, the API describes the value as the “last known fuel price” and provides an updateTime timestamp. That timestamp indicates when the price record was last updated; it does not guarantee that the price remained unchanged afterward. Google Places API documentation

Google’s consumer Help page says gas stations show gasoline prices in their Business Profiles on Maps and Search. For incorrect price information, Google directs users to contact OPIS. The public guidance does not explain a universal end-to-end sourcing pipeline, nor does it say that station owners can directly edit these prices in their Business Profiles. Google describes Maps place information in general as drawing on user contributions, business updates, authoritative sources, and imagery. That broad description does not establish which source supplies fuel prices at a particular station. It is not evidence that all Maps prices come from user reports, a particular app, or one provider. How accurate are Google Maps gas prices?
Google does not give a measured accuracy percentage in the cited documentation. Its “last known” wording makes freshness important: a price can change after its record was updated, and a timestamp alone does not prove that the reported value matched the pump at that moment. Treat Maps prices as a comparison aid, not a guaranteed quote.
There is one specific age-disclosure example, but it is regional. In a 2024 report about Australia, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said Google Maps displays a note beneath a fuel price when it is more than 24 hours old. This describes an Australian disclosure practice in that report; it is not a global promise that every Maps price is refreshed within 24 hours. How to judge a price before driving
- Look for an update time or age note. Where Maps displays one, use it to judge how recently the record was updated—not as proof the pump price is still the same. Google’s API documentation describes the update timestamp, while the Australian age note is specific to the ACCC’s 2024 account. Google Places API documentation
- Compare like with like. Make sure the listed fuel type matches the grade you need; Google’s API supports multiple named fuel types. Google Places API documentation
- Verify locally when the difference matters. If a small price gap determines where you stop, check with the station or another reliable local source before making a detour.
- Use Google’s stated correction route for an incorrect listing. Google Help directs users to OPIS when gas-price data is wrong. Google Business Profile Help
Does Waze explain how Google Maps gets fuel prices?
No. Google’s transparency information for Waze says that Waze may show the price for a user’s preferred fuel, or the cheapest available prices if no preference is selected. It also says Waze does not verify third-party data and cannot guarantee its accuracy or freshness. What this means when choosing a station
A Maps price is useful for comparing nearby options, especially when its update time is recent. But public documentation does not establish a universal source for the values or a published error rate. Use the displayed age as a freshness clue, and confirm the current price locally when accuracy matters more than convenience.
