How does FoxyInvoice keep billing manageable for one operator?

FoxyInvoice’s author describes a deliberately practical architecture: shared code and images for two separately configured deployments, with static frontend delivery, a stateless API, background workers, and PostgreSQL.

FoxyInvoice’s architecture, as described by its author, uses one codebase for two separately configured products: a static Angular app, a .NET API, background workers, and a PostgreSQL database for each deployment. The choices are framed around a practical constraint—not chasing a scale benchmark, but making a billing service manageable for one operator.

What the architecture looks like

The chapter describes a Caddy edge serving the Angular single-page app as static files and reverse-proxying /api/* requests to a .NET API. A separate worker process handles slower or retryable work. Each product deployment has its own PostgreSQL instance.

Part Role in the described system
Frontend Angular 22 with Material, built into static files and served by Caddy; the author describes it as an installable PWA with an offline app shell and runtime-selected branding.
API A stateless .NET 10 service containing domain logic.
Worker A separate entry point into the same codebase for email delivery, reminders, recurring invoice generation, and lead-radar tasks.
Database A separate PostgreSQL instance for each product deployment.
External services and delivery The chapter names SES for email, S3 for files, Stripe for payments, and GitHub Actions over SSH for deployment.

These are implementation details reported in the chapter, not independently audited system facts or a recommendation to use the same frameworks and services. The author’s design test is whether “one tired person” could run it at 2 a.m. (DEV Community).

Why separate the frontend, API, and worker?

Static frontend

Serving compiled frontend files through Caddy avoids operating a separate application server just to deliver the browser app. The PWA’s offline app shell and per-deployment branding are part of the author’s description; the chapter does not provide independent usability or availability measurements.

XKDOUS 2 Pack Invoice Books, 2-Part Carbonless Receipt Books
  • Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
  • Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
  • Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
  • 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
  • Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.

Stateless API

The .NET API handles domain logic and routes controller requests into an in-process dispatcher. Controllers pass command or query records to a handler for each operation. The author says this supports unit testing without starting a web server, gives request shapes compiler-checked types, and keeps validation, logging, and transactions in a pipeline.

The chapter also recounts a production crash loop caused by a MediatR version conflict, followed by replacing that library in an afternoon. That incident is the author’s account, not an independently verified production report. It illustrates a trade-off in adding dependencies: a library can support a clean boundary, but its compatibility becomes part of the system’s operational risk.

  • PACKAGE INCLUDES - Our invoice book per pack has 50 sets sheets, Total of 100 sheets. red code printed on each page with consecutive numbers
  • Material - Receipt book is excellent quality carbonless paper is used in their production, tears off easily along the perforation.

Separate worker

Email, reminders, recurring invoice generation, and other slow or retryable jobs run outside the API request path. That boundary means a slow task need not hold an invoice request open, though it also means the worker’s queue processing and failure handling need to be operated as part of the product.

How the outbox separates saving from sending

A request that saves an invoice and then sends an email synchronously can leave the user with a saved invoice but a failed notification. The chapter’s transactional outbox addresses that gap by writing the business record and an outbox_messages record in the same database transaction.

Adams Sales Order Book, 2-Part, Carbonless, White/Canary, 4-3/16 x 7-3/16 Inches, 50 Sets per Book (DC4705)
  • QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
  • 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
  • WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
  • ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
  • CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly
  1. The application commits the business change and the pending outbox message together.
  2. A worker repeatedly picks up unsent messages and attempts delivery.
  3. After an attempt, it records the message as sent or records an error; the chapter says retries are used.

The author says invoice sends, reminders, and feedback notifications use this flow. The user-facing promise is that the request’s business change and the intent to send are saved together at commit. Delivery occurs asynchronously; a durable pending message is not the same as guaranteed or exactly-once delivery. The chapter does not specify enough delivery semantics to claim exactly-once processing.

How the model handles invoice data and money

The chapter’s core relationships are tenants to users and clients, clients to invoices, and invoices to line items. On mutation, the server recomputes invoice totals from line items rather than trusting a client-provided total.

Its Money value combines a decimal amount with a currency. Add and subtract operations reject values in different currencies instead of silently assuming a conversion. The author says the database stores amounts in numeric(18,2) columns and currencies in char(3) columns, mapped through an EF Core complex type. Those are implementation choices in this system, not a universal accounting rule or a guarantee that two decimal places suit every currency or use case.

The chapter lists invoice states as Draft, Sent, Paid, Partial, Overdue, and Void. A Quote is represented as a type that can be cloned into an invoice; these are descriptions of the application’s model, not legal or accounting guidance.

How one codebase serves two products

The author says the same Docker images and single-page app bundle are deployed separately with different environment configuration. The described deployments are:

Deployment Brand and use described by the author
foxyinvoice.com Freemium, fox-branded product with Stripe enabled.
invoices.seolith.com Enterprise-branded deployment used for the author’s own books.

Sharing the codebase means a fix can be shipped to both deployments, and the author can use the second deployment to dogfood the product. Separate configuration preserves product-specific differences, but it does not remove the need for tenant isolation: the chapter identifies multi-tenancy from day one as a trade-off. It gives no measured cost or performance comparison, so the arrangement should be understood as an operational design choice, not proof that two deployments are cheaper or faster than alternatives.

How public pages are rendered

The chapter says client-side-rendered pages can be difficult for crawlers that do not execute JavaScript, while full server-side rendering would introduce another server to operate. Its middle path is build-time prerendering for marketing routes. Caddy serves those generated pages, while ordinary users receive the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The author describes the prerendered output as including titles, descriptions, canonical tags, JSON-LD, and article copy. The chapter offers no independent crawl tests or comparative SEO results, so it establishes the chosen approach and rationale—not a measured ranking or indexing outcome.

Quick Recap

What this design optimizes for—and what it does not establish

  • Operational familiarity: the author chose Angular and .NET because they were familiar and documented technologies. The chapter’s argument is that known tools can be easier for a solo operator to maintain, not that these are objectively the best frameworks.
  • Failure isolation: worker processes move slow or retryable tasks out of the invoice request path, while the outbox records the intent to deliver alongside the business change.
  • Explicit domain constraints: typed requests and a currency-aware money value make certain invalid operations harder to express or easier to reject.
  • Shared fixes with separate deployments: one codebase can serve two differently configured products, at the cost of deployment management and careful tenant boundaries.
  • No benchmark claim: the chapter reports no comparative performance, cost, or scale measurements. Its standard is whether the operator can understand and run the system.
