Formula 1 race qualifying uses three knockout sessions: Q1, Q2 and Q3. In the standard 22-car field, the six slowest drivers in Q1 are eliminated, then six more in Q2; the ten remaining drivers contest Q3. The fastest valid Q3 lap earns pole position.
How does F1 qualifying work?
Qualifying is a timed session that sets the race qualifying classification and determines the starting order, subject to the separate process used to establish the final race grid. Under the 2026 FIA rules, the standard format assumes 22 eligible cars. The session proceeds through three timed periods, with a seven-minute break between Q1 and Q2 and another seven-minute break between Q2 and Q3.

| Period | Duration | Who takes part | Who advances | Which time ranks drivers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 18 minutes | All eligible drivers | The 16 fastest advance; six are eliminated in the standard 22-car field. | Q1 best time ranks drivers eliminated in Q1. |
| Q2 | 15 minutes | The 16 drivers who advanced from Q1 | The 10 fastest advance; six are eliminated. | Q2 best time ranks drivers eliminated in Q2. |
| Q3 | 13 minutes | The 10 drivers who advanced from Q2 | All ten receive positions in the top ten of the qualifying classification. | Q3 best time ranks the final ten. |
These durations and elimination counts are the 2026 FIA rules for the standard 22-car case. The FIA provides for adjusted elimination numbers when the number of eligible cars is different. A driver’s earlier-period time does not carry forward to determine their position among the drivers who reach a later period: Q3 times rank the top ten, Q2 times rank those eliminated in Q2, and Q1 times rank those eliminated in Q1. How is pole position decided?
Pole position is first place in the race qualifying classification. It goes to the driver with the fastest valid lap in Q3. For a lap to count in the classification, it must be started and completed by crossing the on-track control line. If two drivers record exactly the same time in a qualifying period, the driver who set it first receives priority. (FIA 2026 Formula 1 Regulations, Section B, Articles B2.4.3 and B2.4.4, Issue 09, 1 October 2026)
What happens to drivers eliminated in Q1 or Q2?
Eliminated drivers are classified using their best time from the period in which they were eliminated. That means a Q2 time is used to rank Q2 eliminations, while Q1 times rank Q1 eliminations. If drivers in Q2 or Q3 record no lap time, the FIA’s ordering rules consider whether they attempted a flying lap, failed to start one, or did not leave the pits; drivers within those categories are then ordered using their classification from the previous period.

A Q1 driver may be unclassified if they have no valid Q1 time or their best lap is more than 107% of the fastest lap in that session, unless the Race Director has declared the track wet. The Stewards may decide whether such a driver can take part later in the event. These cases are handled under the FIA regulations and do not change the basic knockout format. No. Pole is the first position in the qualifying classification; the race grid is established through the separate grid procedure and can be affected by later regulatory decisions or penalties. Qualifying therefore identifies the pole winner, but does not guarantee that driver will start the race from first place in every circumstance. Is Sprint Qualifying the same as race qualifying?
No. Sprint Qualifying and race qualifying are separate sessions with separate classifications under the FIA rules. Sprint Qualifying applies to the sprint session, while race qualifying establishes the qualifying classification for the Grand Prix. The Q1, Q2 and Q3 durations and outcomes described here refer to race qualifying, not Sprint Qualifying. (FIA 2026 Formula 1 Regulations, Section B, Issue 09, 1 October 2026)
