In holographic theories such as AdS/CFT, the entanglement entropy of a region in a boundary quantum theory is related to the area of a surface in a higher-dimensional gravitational spacetime. In the Ryu–Takayanagi proposal, that surface’s area encodes the region’s entropy. This gives physicists a way to use quantum information to probe bulk geometry—but it does not establish that entangled particles universally create spacetime.
What entanglement entropy measures
Entanglement describes quantum correlations between parts of a system that cannot be captured by assigning each part an independent state. A common way to quantify those correlations is entanglement entropy. Divide a system into a region A and everything else, B. If the combined system is in a pure quantum state, the entropy of A reflects its entanglement with B.

To calculate it, physicists describe A with a reduced density matrix, obtained by tracing out the degrees of freedom in B. The von Neumann entropy of that reduced density matrix is the entanglement entropy of A. The trace-out step matters: it means the calculation concerns what can be specified about A alone after information about B is set aside, not the entropy of the entire pure system.

Why AdS/CFT provides a geometry connection
AdS/CFT relates two descriptions of a physical system. On one side is a conformal field theory (CFT) living on a boundary. On the other is a gravitational theory in a higher-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk. The boundary theory and the bulk theory are related descriptions, rather than two unrelated systems happening to share a number.
This relationship makes boundary quantities potential clues to bulk properties. The Ryu–Takayanagi proposal gives one especially direct connection: for a suitable region A in the boundary theory, its entanglement entropy is calculated using the area of a corresponding minimal surface in the bulk. The surface is anchored to the boundary of A and extends through the bulk.
In schematic form, the prescription is:
S(A) = Area(γA)/(4GN)
Here, S(A) is the entanglement entropy of boundary region A; γA is the bulk minimal surface anchored on the edge of A; Area(γA) is that surface’s area; and GN is the bulk Newton constant. The formula is a theoretical prescription in the relevant holographic framework, not a general equation for arbitrary entangled systems.
How to read the formula
Choose a boundary region
The calculation begins with a specified region A in the boundary theory. Its boundary—often described as the edge of the region—sets where the bulk surface must be anchored. Changing the region changes the geometric problem being considered.

Find the corresponding bulk surface
The prescription identifies a minimal surface γA in the bulk whose boundary matches the edge of A. “Minimal” means the surface is selected by a geometric area-minimization condition within the applicable setup. In the simplest three-dimensional bulk example, a two-dimensional surface is replaced by a geodesic: the shortest curve between its anchored endpoints.
Use its area to obtain entropy
The area is divided by four times the bulk Newton constant to give the entropy assigned to A by the proposal. In this way, a quantity defined in the boundary theory is tied to a geometric feature of the higher-dimensional bulk. The surface is not a picture of individual particles’ paths; it is the geometric object specified by the holographic calculation.
What this reveals about spacetime
The striking point is not simply that geometry appears in an equation. It is that information about quantum correlations in the boundary theory is related to the size of a bulk geometric object. If the state of the boundary theory changes, its entanglement structure can change; through the holographic prescription, the corresponding entropy is a way to infer or constrain bulk geometric structure.
A useful analogy is to treat boundary entanglement as a map or probe of the bulk. The analogy captures the direction of inference: information in the boundary theory can tell physicists about geometry in the gravitational description. It should not be taken literally as evidence that ordinary spacetime is assembled from pairs of entangled particles. The claim is about holographic encoding in a defined theoretical framework.

This is why entanglement is important to research on the emergence of spacetime. If geometric properties can be represented by quantum-information quantities in a boundary description, then studying those quantities may help explain how a gravitational geometry is encoded or constrained. The Ryu–Takayanagi relation supplies a concrete bridge for exploring that question. It does not, on its own, provide a complete account of how all spacetime arises.
What the original proposal established
Shinsei Ryu and Tadashi Takayanagi proposed the relation in 2006 in “Holographic Derivation of Entanglement Entropy from AdS/CFT.” Their paper considered an AdS3/CFT2 example: a three-dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk paired with a two-dimensional conformal field theory. In that case, the relevant bulk minimal surface is a geodesic. The authors reported that their prescription reproduces the known two-dimensional CFT entanglement result.
The original proposal also develops higher-dimensional cases, where the geometric object is a minimal surface rather than a geodesic. The geodesic example is therefore a useful special case, not a replacement for the general surface-based description.

The 2016 review describes the field’s motivation as its “potential to teach us about the emergence of spacetime in holography.” That wording is deliberately about potential and about holography: the relation is a tool for investigating emergence, not a completed derivation of spacetime from entanglement.
How the examples and claims differ
The AdS3/CFT2 result is the clearest concrete example: the bulk object is a geodesic, and the proposal reproduces a known CFT result. In higher-dimensional cases, the object is a minimal surface. The broader proposal and its later developments cover more than that first check, including horizons, black-hole entropy, and covariant formulations. These are related applications and extensions, not interchangeable claims that every setting has been established in the same way.
There is also a difference between using entanglement as a probe and asserting that entanglement creates geometry. The former is supported within holographic descriptions: boundary entropy is related to a bulk area, so information about the boundary state can constrain bulk geometry. The latter is a much broader claim and is not established by the Ryu–Takayanagi prescription. The framework’s scope, the chosen boundary region, and the geometric prescription all matter.

| Question | What the holographic relation supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Which theories? | A boundary CFT related through AdS/CFT to a gravitational theory in an anti-de Sitter bulk. | A formula for any quantum system, regardless of whether it has a holographic gravitational description. |
| Which geometric object? | A bulk minimal surface anchored to the boundary of the chosen region; in the AdS3/CFT2 example, a geodesic. | A literal web of particle connections or a geometric object that can be assigned to every pair of entangled particles. |
| What is the conclusion? | Boundary entanglement entropy can encode or probe bulk geometric information under the proposal. | That entanglement has been shown to create all spacetime, or that ordinary spacetime must be holographic in this specific way. |
| What remains a research question? | How holographic entanglement prescriptions extend across settings and illuminate spacetime emergence. | A complete derivation of the prescription from first principles of AdS/CFT; the 2016 review identifies this as a challenge. |
The distinctions in the table are essential. “Entanglement relates to geometry” is accurate when it refers to this holographic connection. Without the qualification, the phrase can sound like a claim about all entangled objects in the universe, which the proposal does not make.

Why the relation matters despite its limits
Entanglement entropy is normally computed from quantum states and reduced density matrices; area is a geometric quantity. Relating the two gives researchers a precise way to translate between a boundary theory’s information and a bulk gravitational description. Rather than treating “spacetime from entanglement” as a slogan, the Ryu–Takayanagi formula makes the connection concrete enough to calculate in suitable settings.
It also changes how one can approach a geometry question. If a bulk surface’s area is encoded by boundary entropy, then understanding the boundary state and its correlations can yield information about the bulk. Conversely, a proposed bulk geometry has to be compatible with the boundary-theory quantities that encode it. The correspondence therefore provides a framework for investigating geometry through quantum information, not a shortcut that removes the need to specify the theory, region, state, and applicable prescription.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does entanglement always create spacetime?
No. The Ryu–Takayanagi relation connects entanglement entropy and bulk geometry in suitable holographic settings such as AdS/CFT. It does not show that every entangled pair creates spacetime or that all ordinary spacetime arises this way.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What does the Ryu–Takayanagi formula say?
For a suitable boundary region A in the holographic setup, its entanglement entropy S(A) is given by the area of a corresponding bulk minimal surface γA divided by 4 times the bulk Newton constant: S(A) = Area(γA)/(4GN).
Why is the AdS3/CFT2 example important?
In the 2006 proposal, the bulk minimal surface in this three-dimensional example is a geodesic. Ryu and Takayanagi reported that the prescription reproduces the known entanglement result for the two-dimensional CFT, providing a concrete check of the relation.
Is the prescription fully derived from AdS/CFT first principles?
The 2016 review identifies deriving the prescription from first principles of AdS/CFT as a challenge. The proposal and its applications are important tools, but that challenge is one reason to distinguish an established holographic relation from a complete account of spacetime emergence.
The Bottom Line
In AdS/CFT, the Ryu–Takayanagi proposal relates a boundary region’s entanglement entropy to the area of a bulk minimal surface. This makes entanglement a precise probe of geometry in holography, not proof that entanglement universally creates spacetime.
