Asian Games golf is played as stroke play: golfers accumulate their strokes across multiple rounds, and the lowest total wins an individual event. At Hangzhou 2022, staged in 2023, men and women competed for separate individual and team medals across four scheduled rounds. Entry rules and the team-scoring formula can vary by edition, so the relevant Games handbook—not an older edition’s rules—determines the details.
How does the Asian Games golf competition work?
In stroke play, every stroke counts toward a player’s total. The golfer with the fewest strokes over the scheduled rounds wins the individual competition. Unlike match play, competitors are not trying to win a separate contest against one opponent on each hole.

For Hangzhou 2022, the official schedule listed four days of golf, from September 28 through October 1, 2023, at West Lake International Golf Course. Each day included men’s and women’s individual and team competition; the schedule was subject to change. The event overview described the competition as stroke play and listed four rounds. Individual and team events
Individual medals are awarded according to players’ own totals. A team medal is a separate event in which results are combined under that edition’s technical rules. The Hangzhou overview confirms men’s and women’s team events, but does not give the score-aggregation formula. Check the relevant edition’s handbook before assuming whether every team member’s score, or only a subset, counts in each round.

What rules decide ties and shortened play?
Rules are edition-specific. The OCA’s regulations for the 2018 Asian Games specified four 18-hole stroke-play rounds. They called for a hole-by-hole playoff to decide ties for first, second or third in the individual events, and allowed standings to be decided if at least one round had been completed when a round could not be held. Those provisions describe the 2018 edition; they should not be assumed to apply to another Games without checking its regulations. The 2018 document also cited the R&A-approved Rules of Golf and local rules approved by the technical delegate and committee. OCA 18th Asian Games golf regulations
Who is eligible to play in the Asian Games golf competition?
For Hangzhou 2022, professionals were permitted to compete for the first time, according to the organizing committee. That change did not make the event open entry: athletes represented their National Olympic Committee, with team selection and nomination handled through country- or territory-level processes. China’s announced Hangzhou roster, for example, included Wu Ashun, Chen Guxin and Ding Wenyi in the men’s competition, and Lin Xiyu, Yin Ruoning and Liu Yu in the women’s competition. Those names describe China’s team, not the event’s full entry limits. Hangzhou organizing committee report on China’s squad and professional eligibility

For another edition, the technical handbook is the authority for NOC participation, athlete limits by gender, any age or status conditions, substitutions, and team scoring. The cited Hangzhou materials do not establish those rules for a future Games, so the professional eligibility change should not be treated as a complete or permanent eligibility code.

Hangzhou 2022 listed four golf gold medals: men’s individual, men’s team, women’s individual and women’s team. The individual events reward the lowest player totals; team medals depend on the aggregation method set for that edition.
