How Does argenx Compare With Other Companies Developing Treatments for Autoimmune Diseases?

A focused comparison of argenx and selected competitors in generalized myasthenia gravis, including treatment targets, U.S. approval populations, sales, and pipeline disclosures.

argenx stands out in the evidence available here for its commercial VYVGART franchise and wider pipeline, while Johnson & Johnson, UCB, and Amgen offer distinct approved approaches to generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) in the United States. This is a focused comparison of gMG treatments and argenx’s reported portfolio—not a ranking of companies across all autoimmune diseases.

Why gMG is the clearest basis for comparison

Autoimmune diseases span many conditions, and companies’ portfolios cannot be fairly compared by counting products or candidates alone. The strongest overlap in the available company disclosures is generalized myasthenia gravis, a condition for which argenx, Johnson & Johnson, UCB, and Amgen have treatments or approvals to compare.

The comparison below focuses on treatment target, U.S. approved population, and portfolio position. An approval in one country does not establish approval elsewhere, and the companies’ trial results come from separate studies rather than head-to-head comparisons.

How the gMG treatments differ

Company and treatment Approach U.S. gMG approval described in the cited announcement What the comparison shows
argenx — VYVGART (efgartigimod) FcRn-targeting treatment The FDA approval announcement for the subcutaneous prefilled syringe describes use in adults with AChR-antibody-positive gMG. The argenx 2026 half-year report lists gMG among VYVGART’s active indications. A commercial franchise with multiple presentations and a pipeline extending beyond gMG.
Johnson & Johnson — IMAAVY (nipocalimab) FcRn-blocking monoclonal antibody U.S. approval announced April 30, 2025, for adults and children aged 12 and older who are AChR- or MuSK-antibody positive. Shares the broad FcRn target class with efgartigimod; the announced age and antibody criteria differ from the cited VYVGART prefilled-syringe approval.
UCB — RYSTIGGO (rozanolixizumab) FcRn-binding antibody U.S. approval announced June 27, 2023, for adults who are AChR- or MuSK-antibody positive. Another FcRn-based option, with its own labeled population and administration details.
Amgen — UPLIZNA (inebilizumab) CD19-directed antibody that depletes CD19-positive B cells FDA approval announced December 11, 2025, for adults with AChR- or MuSK-antibody-positive gMG. Uses a distinct B-cell-targeting approach rather than FcRn blockade.

These label summaries are limited to the populations described in the respective announcements; they are not substitutes for current prescribing information. For an individual treatment decision, the relevant label and clinician guidance should determine whether age, antibody status, route, dosing, safety considerations, and other factors fit.

What argenx brings beyond its gMG treatment

Commercial VYVGART footprint

In its half-year report covering the six months ended June 30, 2026, argenx said VYVGART was approved in more than 30 countries, with three active indications: gMG, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in Japan. The report described intravenous, subcutaneous, and prefilled-syringe presentations. These are company-reported figures and indications as of that reporting period; they are not a current country-by-country approval list.

argenx reported VYVGART product net sales of $2.8 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2026, compared with $1.7 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2025. These are company-reported half-year figures, not full-year sales or independent estimates of market share.

The report positioned a VYVGART SC autoinjector for launch in 2027 across approved indications. That is an argenx forecast, not evidence that the launch has occurred.

Investigational programs

The same report described efgartigimod studies in seronegative gMG, ocular myasthenia gravis, primary ITP, Graves’ disease, myositis, and Sjögren’s disease, among other areas. It reported positive results for the ocular MG study and outlined expected timing for further readouts. Those stages and timelines reflect argenx’s account at June 30, 2026, and may change.

argenx also described empasiprubart, an anti-C2 program, in registrational studies for multifocal motor neuropathy and CIDP, as well as a gMG combination study with VYVGART. The report listed additional candidates, including adimanebart, ARGX-121, and ARGX-109. The cited disclosure establishes that these candidates are in development; it does not provide enough detail here to compare their prospects or likely clinical impact with other companies’ programs.

What the evidence does—and does not—support

Useful ways to compare the companies

  • Target and mechanism: VYVGART, IMAAVY, and RYSTIGGO are FcRn-based treatments; UPLIZNA targets CD19-positive B cells.
  • Approved population: Compare the specific age and antibody criteria in the applicable country’s current label, not just the disease name.
  • Delivery and treatment schedule: Compare route, frequency, and treatment setting using current prescribing information. The announcements summarized here do not provide a complete, standardized schedule comparison.
  • Portfolio scope and stage: Distinguish an approved treatment from an investigational program, and keep each pipeline description tied to the date of the company report.
  • Trial evidence: Consider study population, design, endpoint, and follow-up before interpreting a result.

Why this is not a ranking of efficacy

Amgen’s announcement reported a 1.9-point MG-ADL difference versus placebo at week 26 in the MINT trial. That is a result from Amgen’s trial, not a head-to-head comparison with VYVGART, IMAAVY, or RYSTIGGO. The sources describe separate studies with different designs, populations, endpoints, and follow-up, so their numerical results cannot establish which medicine works better.

Why it is not a complete comparison of autoimmune drugmakers

This evidence supports a selected comparison in gMG and an overview of argenx’s wider disclosed pipeline. It does not establish how argenx compares with every company developing treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, or other autoimmune conditions, nor does it provide a global approval matrix for the four companies. The portfolio and approval details above are anchored to argenx’s half-year report for the six months ended June 30, 2026, and the dated U.S. approval announcements cited for the competitors.
