An AI voice agent is a system that listens to speech, decides what to do, and responds aloud. It connects audio capture and playback to conversation logic, optional software tools, and the application rules that control what those tools may do. Some agents pass through separate speech-recognition and speech-synthesis stages; others handle incoming and outgoing audio in one real-time session.
What happens during a voice-agent conversation?
A spoken exchange is a sequence of audio, decisions, and application events—not simply a language model speaking through a microphone. A typical turn follows this path:

- Capture and transport: A browser, phone, or other device captures the caller’s audio and sends it to the agent system. The response audio must travel back to the device for playback.
- Detect the end of a turn: The system estimates whether the caller has finished speaking. It may use voice activity detection, which looks for speech and silence, or semantic turn detection, which considers whether the utterance sounds complete.
- Interpret the speech: In a staged pipeline, speech recognition converts audio into text. In a speech-to-speech session, the model can accept audio directly; a separate transcript is not necessarily part of its reasoning path, though an application may still create one for display, review, or records.
- Choose a response or action: The agent uses the current input, its instructions, and conversation context to formulate a reply or request a tool action. A tool might retrieve information or carry out part of a workflow.
- Generate and play the reply: A staged pipeline converts response text into speech. A speech-to-speech system can generate audio directly. The client plays the result, while the system keeps track of which audio was actually heard.
The application remains responsible for permissions and business records. If an agent says a task is complete, that confirmation should reflect the result returned by the action—not merely the agent’s intention to perform it.
Which architecture does a voice agent use?
There is no single architecture that suits every use case. The central choice is how speech, reasoning, and tools are divided between components.

| Pattern | How it works | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chained voice pipeline | Speech-to-text → agent workflow and tools → text-to-speech | You need to inspect or transform text between stages, replace components independently, or add explicit checks between them | Intermediate steps are easier to see and control, but each handoff adds a component to manage |
| Speech-to-speech or realtime session | A multimodal model handles incoming audio and produces spoken output within a session; it can also work with tools and session state | Natural turn-taking, interruptions, or reducing delay before the first audio response are priorities | There may be fewer exposed text stages, but the application still must manage transport, tools, permissions, and evaluation |
| Live voice with a delegated backend | A live voice layer handles the spoken exchange and delegates reasoning or tool work to a separate backend | You want to reuse an existing text workflow or keep backend choices independent of the live voice layer | The boundary between the voice layer and backend introduces another handoff to coordinate |
These are design patterns, not a universal performance ranking. Choose based on the control you need over intermediate text, the importance of a speech-native interaction, and whether existing backend work should be reused.
What makes a voice agent feel responsive?
Responsiveness depends on the full route from the microphone to the speaker. Network round-trip time, jitter, packet loss, connection setup, model processing, tool response time, buffering, and client playback can all add delay. A fast model cannot by itself guarantee a quick or natural exchange.

Streaming allows processing to begin while a person is still speaking instead of waiting for a complete recording. But streaming alone does not solve turn detection: the system still has to decide when enough of the utterance is available to respond. Tool calls can also dominate the wait if the agent needs information or an action from another service.

How should an agent handle pauses and interruptions?
Deciding when the caller is done
A silence-based detector may treat a thinking pause, a pause while reading a number, or a pause from a second-language speaker as the end of a turn. A shorter silence threshold can make replies feel quicker but may cut the caller off; a longer one may leave an unnecessary gap. Semantic turn detection can help distinguish a pause within an unfinished thought from a completed utterance, but noise can still trigger false starts or endings.
Letting the caller barge in
Barge-in means the caller can speak over the agent and take the floor. The system needs to stop queued playback when interrupted and align its conversation history with what the caller actually heard. Otherwise, it may treat unplayed words as if they had already been communicated, producing confusing follow-up replies.

Handling checks that finish late
An application may screen generated speech before it plays. That can add buffering and delay. If a check fails, times out, or returns after the caller has canceled the response, the application must clear the queued audio and prevent a late result from restarting canceled playback.

Transport is part of the interaction design because it affects how audio is sent, how playback is managed, and which system components must handle cancellation and session state.
- Browser sessions: WebRTC is commonly used to carry microphone input and model output as media streams. It covers connection negotiation, encrypted media transport, codec selection, and media buffering and quality control.
- Server-side workflows or custom media pipelines: WebSocket can provide a direct application connection, but the application takes on more responsibility for audio capture and playback, cancellation, and truncating output that was not heard.
- Phone calls: A telephony integration must handle call routing and media transport. Keypad tones, or DTMF, can provide menu selections or numeric input. A phone deployment therefore involves more than adding a microphone to a browser-based agent.
If a browser SDK supports tools, determine where those tools run. A tool available in browser-side code is not automatically a private server operation. Keep sensitive actions, permissions, and business rules on trusted application infrastructure.
How can you evaluate whether an agent works?
Test the spoken experience and the real application outcome together. A plausible-sounding confirmation does not prove that the requested action succeeded.
Quick Recap
- Choose representative scenarios: Include ordinary requests, ambiguous wording, pauses, noisy audio, interruptions, and tool-dependent tasks that reflect how people will actually use the agent.
- Keep comparisons consistent: Repeat the same scenarios with the same caller recording, model configuration, tools, and transport when comparing changes.
- Capture the relevant events: Save appropriate audio, turn and playback events, tool results, and application state so you can trace what happened. Follow applicable privacy and retention requirements for recorded conversations.
- Check both conversation and outcome: Review response timing, unwanted silence, overlap, and whether the agent yielded to an interruption. Separately verify that the intended tool action completed correctly and that the spoken response matched its returned result.
