AirTags and other Bluetooth trackers are for finding belongings, not tracking people. They are not standalone GPS devices with a guaranteed live location: an AirTag uses nearby devices in Apple’s Find My network to report where it was detected. If an unfamiliar tracker seems to be moving with you, treat the alert as a reason to check—not proof of who placed it or why—and use your phone’s safety tools to investigate.
What a Bluetooth tracker can—and cannot—do
An AirTag sends out a Bluetooth signal that nearby devices in the Find My network can detect. Those devices relay a location to iCloud, where the owner can see it in Find My. Apple describes that process as anonymous and encrypted. A location update depends on a compatible device being close enough to detect the tag; an AirTag is not a standalone cellular or GPS locator, and its updates are not guaranteed to be continuous.

That network-based update is different from Precision Finding, which can help locate a nearby AirTag on supported hardware. Apple’s current product page says AirTag can be shared with up to five people and that its Find My network includes more than a billion Apple devices; these are Apple’s product claims, not independent measurements. Apple also says temporary sharing of a lost item’s location ends when the item is reunited or after seven days. Apple AirTag product page
Apple says AirTags are intended to help find belongings such as keys and bags. Its support guidance says they “should not be used to track people, and should not be used to track property that does not belong to you.”

Why you might get an unknown-tracker alert
Apple and Google’s unwanted-tracking alerts are designed to notify you when a compatible tracker appears to be traveling with you over time. An alert is a prompt to investigate, not proof of malicious intent. A borrowed set of keys, a shared bag, or traveling with someone who owns a tracker may explain it.
The map in an alert shows where the tracker was detected with you. It does not show when its owner checked the tracker’s location. Apple and Google announced a cross-platform alert specification on 13 May 2024, with support arriving in iOS 17.5 and Android 6.0 or later. They said compatible alerts can identify a tracker, play a sound, and provide disabling instructions. The manufacturers named at the time—Chipolo, eufy, Jio, Motorola, and Pebblebee—had committed to future compatibility; that announcement does not establish that every model from those manufacturers is compatible today. Make sure your phone can deliver alerts
iPhone and iPad
Apple’s guidance distinguishes the general Tracking Notifications feature from alerts for compatible Bluetooth location-tracking devices. Tracking Notifications generally require iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later; alerts for compatible devices require iOS or iPadOS 17.5 or later. Apple also advises keeping Bluetooth and Location Services on, enabling Tracking Notifications, turning off Airplane Mode, and enabling Significant Locations so notifications can work when you arrive at significant locations. Tile’s Scan and Secure
Life360 says Tile’s Scan and Secure feature can detect nearby Tiles and Tile-enabled devices that may be traveling with you. It is available in the Tile app on iOS and Android without an active account, provided Bluetooth, Location or Location Services, and Precise Location are enabled. To scan, walk, move, or drive away from your starting location; circling around one spot does not work properly. This feature is specific to Tile and Tile-enabled devices, not a universal detector for Bluetooth or GPS trackers. Life360 Support: Tile Scan and Secure Overview
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you get an alert
- Check the alert and map. Open the notification and review where the tracker was detected with you. The map is evidence of detections, not a record of when the owner viewed its location.
- Use the phone’s finding tools. On iPhone, use Find My to play a sound and, for an unknown AirTag on supported hardware, use Precision Finding. On Android, play a sound; Find Nearby is available for Find Hub-compatible trackers. Follow the on-screen instructions for the device type.
- Search belongings and nearby areas. Check bags, pockets, coats, and other items with you. If you do not find it, check the immediate surroundings and your vehicle when it is safe to do so.
- Save identifying details. Keep screenshots of the alert and map and record any device information shown. For an AirTag, hold an NFC-capable phone near its white side; the page that opens can show its serial number and the last four digits of the registered phone number. Preserve this information if you may need to report the incident.
- Prioritize safety. If you feel at risk, go to a safe public place and contact someone you trust or law enforcement. You do not have to confront anyone or disable a tracker before asking for help.
Google notes that disabling a tracker can affect whether law enforcement can obtain owner information for some devices. If you are unsure whether disabling it is safe, leave it on and seek help. If you decide to disable it, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that specific device. Apple’s and Google’s guidance both warn that switching off Bluetooth or location services on your phone, or using Airplane Mode, does not disable the tracker itself or stop it from sharing its location.

What these alerts do not establish
- They are not universal detection. Alert support depends on the phone’s operating system, settings, and tracker family. A phone may not alert for every tracker type.
- They do not identify intent. A notification alone cannot tell you whether the tracker belongs to someone you know or whether its owner means harm.
- They do not provide a live owner-view history. The detection map shows where the tag was detected with you, not when its owner looked at its location.
- They do not turn off a tag remotely. Phone settings affect the phone, not the tracker; use the manufacturer’s disabling instructions if appropriate.
