AI search can represent a brand through an answer and its cited sources, not just a position in a list of links. Generative engine optimization (GEO) describes efforts to improve how a site or brand is surfaced and represented in those answers. It extends SEO rather than replacing it—and it is a developing research and industry term, not one universal platform specification.
How AI search can represent your brand
Some AI search experiences retrieve information and generate responses grounded in sources. A page may therefore matter because it is cited, quoted, or used to shape an answer, even when a conventional ranking position does not capture that influence. A brand can also be mentioned without a link, or described inaccurately; visibility alone does not establish that the representation is useful or correct.

There is no single pipeline shared by every AI search service. Retrieval, answer generation, citation behavior, and reporting vary by platform. Google’s documentation describes its own AI Overviews and AI Mode, and should not be treated as an account of how every other service works.
What GEO adds to SEO
SEO remains the foundation: pages need to be accessible, discoverable, useful, and eligible to appear in search. GEO applies a broader visibility lens to generated answers, asking whether a page or brand is surfaced, cited, prominent, and represented accurately—not only where a page ranks.
#1 Best Overall
| Question | Traditional SEO view | GEO-oriented view |
|---|---|---|
| What is visible? | Rankings, impressions, clicks, and landing pages | Brand mentions, cited sources, prominence in answers, and referrals |
| What does success mean? | Relevant search visibility and useful traffic | Visibility plus accurate representation and outcomes such as qualified visits or conversions |
| How is it measured? | Search-platform reporting and analytics | Platform-specific reporting where available, plus a consistently defined query set and outcome measures |
This comparison is a practical measurement framework, not an official cross-platform standard. Use the metrics that fit the service and business goal; do not assume one platform’s reporting captures visibility everywhere.
What the GEO study found—and what it did not
Aggarwal and co-authors introduced GEO in a paper presented at KDD 2024 and published in the ACM SIGKDD proceedings on August 24, 2024. They created GEO-bench, a benchmark comprising 10,000 diverse queries. In the settings they evaluated, the authors reported that GEO methods improved visibility by up to 40%, with effectiveness varying by domain. They also reported up to 37% visibility improvement on Perplexity in their evaluated real-world engine setting. Those are experimental results, not forecasts or guaranteed lifts for a particular brand, query set, platform, or current production system. (GEO paper; Princeton publication record)
Rank #2
The study describes tactics including adding citations, quotations, and statistics as ways to improve measured source visibility in its evaluations. That does not mean inserting numbers or citations mechanically will improve every page or answer. Use evidence where it genuinely supports the content, and judge any change against a defined set of queries and outcomes.

Google Search Central’s guide, last updated December 10, 2025 UTC, says that SEO best practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode and that no additional requirements or special optimizations are necessary to appear. For a page to be eligible as a supporting link, it must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Keep the search foundations in place
- Allow Google to crawl the page and make important pages findable through internal links.
- Provide a good page experience and make important information available as text.
- Use relevant images or video to support the text when they help explain the subject.
- Keep structured data consistent with the content people can see on the page.
Google says its AI features do not require new machine-readable files, AI text files, or special schema.org markup. Its guidance is specific to Google Search features; it does not establish requirements for other platforms. (Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
Understand why Google AI answers can vary
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: issuing related searches across topics and data sources. The features can return different responses and links because they may use different models and techniques. AI Overviews also appear only when Google’s systems determine they add value beyond classic Search, so they are not shown for every query. These are descriptions of Google’s features, not a universal model for generative search.

Start with the outcome you want, then choose measures that can actually observe it. A mention or citation may indicate visibility, while referral visits, conversions, and time on site help assess what happened after exposure. Keep these measures distinct: being cited is not the same as earning a visit, and a visit is not automatically a conversion.
Use Google’s reporting for Google Search
Google says appearances in its AI features are included in overall Search traffic and reported in Search Console’s Performance report under Web search type. Its guide also recommends using analytics to track conversions and time on site. Google describes clicks from pages with AI Overviews as higher quality based on its own observations; that is Google’s reported observation, not an independent cross-platform benchmark. Make other visibility checks comparable
For any additional platform or monitoring method, document the scope so results can be interpreted rather than treated as a universal score:
- What is counted: rank, clicks, brand mentions, source citations, or referrals.
- Where it is measured: Google Search Console for Google Search, or separately verified reporting for another platform.
- What outcome matters: visibility, accurate description, qualified visits, conversions, or time on site.
- How repeatable it is: record platform, query set, geography, language, date, and whether prompt wording and settings stayed constant.
When comparing results over time, keep the query set and conditions stable where possible, and label any changes. A shift in prompts, region, language, or platform can change answers independently of work on the site.
Quick Recap
What a practical GEO workflow looks like
- Choose a real audience question. Select queries tied to the brand’s subject area and record the exact wording, language, and geography.
- Check the page’s search eligibility. For Google, verify crawl access, indexing, snippet eligibility, and internal discoverability; these conditions still do not guarantee an AI-feature appearance.
- Improve the source, not just its signals. Make the answer clear and useful, support factual claims with appropriate evidence, and use quotations or statistics only when they add substance.
- Observe answers and citations. Where the platform permits, note whether the brand appears, which pages are cited, how prominently they are used, and whether the description is accurate.
- Connect visibility to outcomes. Review referrals and analytics outcomes separately from mentions or citations, using Google Search Console for Google Search reporting.
- Report scope alongside results. Preserve the date, platform, query set, region, language, and metric definition so a later comparison is meaningful.
