The key trade-off is that “free” depends on the provider and its current plan, while the location it returns is an estimate—not a precise device position.
The available project details do not identify the tool’s provider, code, or what its creator learned firsthand. The walkthrough below therefore describes a practical implementation pattern, not verified claims about that specific build.

What the tool does
An IP lookup tool takes an IPv4 or IPv6 address and asks a service to return information associated with it. Depending on the service and the response fields it offers, that can include an approximate location or network-related details. A useful first version needs only an input, a lookup action, and a place to show the result.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Free” needs a precise definition in a real project: it could mean a no-cost endpoint, a free tier with limits, or a demo that is free to run but depends on a provider account. The provider and its current pricing are not established here, so check its live documentation before describing the tool as free or setting usage expectations.

How a browser-side lookup works
The basic flow is straightforward: read an optional IP address, make a request to a lookup service, parse its response, and render only the fields the user needs. For a visitor’s own public IP, an integration may allow the IP input to be omitted so the service identifies the address making the request. The IPGeolocation JavaScript SDK documents this behavior for its lookup integration; authentication and access to features depend on that provider’s offering. IPGeolocation JavaScript SDK documentation
- Get an address. Accept a user-entered IP, or use a provider-supported caller-IP lookup when the input is omitted.
- Request the lookup. Send the request to the service’s documented endpoint with the authentication method it requires.
- Handle the response. Check whether the request succeeded before trying to read expected fields.
- Show a limited result. Render relevant values as text, and explain that location fields are estimates.
Before integrating any service, check its current documentation for supported IP versions, returned fields, authentication, plan restrictions, and what data the request sends to the provider. The IPGeolocation SDK documentation describes support for IPv4 and IPv6 and documents API-key or request-origin authentication for single lookups. Its request-origin option and some other features have plan constraints, so those details should not be treated as universal API rules.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
A practical vanilla-JavaScript implementation pattern
The following is a provider-neutral outline, not the original project’s code. Replace the endpoint, authentication, and response-field names only with values from the service you choose; do not put a secret API key in browser code.
- Validate the input. Trim whitespace and reject an empty value when the user is expected to enter an IP. If you support both address families, verify the provider accepts both.
- Make the request on submit. Prevent the form’s default page reload, show a loading state, and disable repeat submission until the request finishes.
- Check status and response shape. Treat non-success HTTP responses, malformed JSON, and missing fields as errors rather than showing an empty or misleading result.
- Render safely. Insert provider values as text, not HTML. For example, use
textContentfor a result field rather than assigning untrusted response data toinnerHTML. - Restore the interface. In a
finallyblock, clear the loading state and re-enable the form whether the lookup succeeds or fails.
Keep error messages useful without exposing credentials or dumping a raw response. Distinguish an invalid input from a failed network request or a provider rejection when the response makes that distinction available.

What an IP location result can—and cannot—tell you
An IP-derived location is an estimate. It can be useful for broad context, but it should not be presented as a street address or proof of where a person or device is. The result can depend on network routing and the data available to the provider.
Accuracy figures from other location methods should not be repurposed as IP-lookup promises. Google’s Geolocation API documentation describes a typical radius of around 20 meters when a request includes two or more Wi-Fi access points. For its IP-based fallback, Google describes the lowest accuracy among its listed signal sources and says the radius can reach thousands of meters. Those are Google API-specific descriptions, not general guarantees for IP lookup databases. Google Geolocation API documentation

IP lookup is not browser geolocation
An IP lookup service and the browser’s navigator.geolocation API are different tools. The latter is a permission-gated interface for requesting device position; its possible underlying signals can include GPS and network information. It is not simply another name for looking up a public IP address.
The World Wide Web Consortium’s Geolocation API Recommendation says the API requires express user permission before sharing position data and makes no guarantee that the returned location is the device’s actual location. W3C Geolocation API Recommendation

Browser integration versus a server
A browser-side integration avoids building a custom server, but it does not hide the request from users. Depending on the provider’s design, credentials or request details may be visible in the client, and browser settings or add-ons can interfere with requests.
MaxMind’s JavaScript client documentation says sites using its service must be registered, notes that browser settings or add-ons may prevent requests, and recommends server-side integration as more secure and robust. That is guidance about MaxMind’s client, not a rule that every provider uses the same authentication model. MaxMind JavaScript client documentation
If a provider requires a secret credential, make the request through a server you control instead of embedding the secret in JavaScript. A server also gives you a place to manage usage and failures. For a small public demo, browser integration may be sufficient if the provider explicitly supports it and the credential is safe to expose under its documented model.
Handle location data with care
Even an approximate location can be sensitive in context. The W3C’s privacy guidance recommends requesting position only when needed, using it for the stated task, disposing of it when that task is complete unless retention is permitted, securing it, and explaining collection, purpose, retention, sharing, and user choices. This guidance does not determine legal obligations in any particular jurisdiction. W3C Geolocation API Recommendation
For a lookup page, tell users what information is sent to the lookup provider and why. Avoid retaining results unless the feature needs it, and describe any retention or sharing accurately.
