MCP and the USB-C Analogy: What AI Connections Do—and Don’t—Share

MCP is a shared software protocol for connecting AI clients to tools and data, a little like USB-C offers a common connection standard. But the analogy has limits: MCP does not make every service compatible, every implementation interchangeable, or every server safe. A working connection still depends on matching protocol versions and capabilities—and on whether you trust what the server can access or do.

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) defines conventions for communication between an AI client and a server that provides capabilities. It uses a JSON-RPC-based data layer and separates that layer from the transport used to carry messages. In practice, an MCP client can discover capabilities, send a request, and receive a result using a shared protocol rather than a unique interface for every client-server pairing. The official architecture documentation describes the layers and their roles.

An MCP server can expose three kinds of capability:

  • Tools: actions the model may request, such as carrying out an operation through the server.
  • Resources: information the client can use as context.
  • Prompts: reusable interaction templates.

The client discovers what is available, the model can choose a tool and provide arguments matching its schema, and the server validates and performs the operation before returning a result. The model can then use that result in its response. OpenAI’s MCP server documentation describes this practical tool-call sequence.

Is MCP really the USB-C of AI?

As an interoperability metaphor, yes: both aim to replace some one-off connections with shared conventions. An MCP-compatible client and server can communicate through a common model instead of requiring a bespoke interface for that particular pairing. MCP is an open software specification, however, not a physical connector or a certification that two products work together in every way.

USB-C may bring to mind a broadly interchangeable port. MCP does not promise that. A client only supports the protocol features it implements; a server only provides the capabilities it exposes; and both sides need compatible protocol behavior. The specification also makes some components optional and distinguishes transports. So “supports MCP” is a starting point for checking compatibility, not the end of the check. The current specification overview sets out those distinctions.

What has to match for an MCP connection to work?

Check the implementation, transport, and capabilities—not just whether a product uses the MCP label.

  • Protocol revision: Confirm which revision the client and server support. The current specification identifies revision 2026-07-28. Its changes include breaking changes, so older implementations may require migration rather than connecting unchanged.
  • Capabilities: Verify that the client supports the feature the server offers and that the server actually exposes the tool, resource, or prompt you need.
  • Transport: The current architecture documents stdio for direct local process communication and Streamable HTTP for remote communication. Transport affects how a connection is established and how authorization works.
  • Permissions and identity: Determine which account or credentials the server uses, what access those credentials grant, and which operations the server can perform.

The July 28, 2026 release changed the connection model: the maintainers say the new core is stateless, with required metadata carried in each request and no assumption of conversational continuity from a reused connection or process. It retires the earlier initialization/session exchange in favor of self-describing requests and optional discovery. The release also describes Multi Round-Trip Requests, header-based routing, cache hints, authorization hardening, and a formal extensions framework. These are claims from the project’s maintainers; implementers should consult the release announcement and migration information for their specific stack.

Does MCP let any AI connect to any tool?

No. MCP standardizes how supported clients and servers can represent and exchange capabilities; it does not turn an arbitrary service into an MCP server. A service must expose an MCP-compatible server, and the client must implement the relevant protocol revision, transport, and capability.

Even when both ends connect, they may not offer the same experience. One server might expose a read-only resource while another offers tools that change data. One client may support a capability that another does not. Treat compatibility as a specific question—“Can this client use this server’s listed capabilities over this transport and revision?”—rather than assuming universal plug-and-play.

Is it safe to connect an MCP server?

Protocol compatibility is not a trust guarantee. A tool can take actions, and a server may access private data or act with a user’s credentials. A standardized request format does not certify the server’s operator, its code, the handling of credentials, or the consequences of invoking a tool.

Before connecting, review the server and the permission boundary it will operate within. For production systems that handle private data or perform actions, OpenAI’s developer guidance calls for protecting MCP servers. The MCP tool guidance also recommends making exposed tools clear in the interface and giving people the ability to deny invocations; see the authorization specification for its dated revision and consult the current specification when implementing.

What does MCP adoption evidence actually show?

In its July 28, 2026 announcement, the MCP project’s maintainers reported “close to half-a-billion downloads a month” across Tier 1 SDKs and said the TypeScript and Python SDKs had each passed one billion total downloads. Those are SDK download figures reported by the maintainers—not counts of unique developers, active installations, production systems, or services that can interoperate. The announcement also names Amazon Bedrock AgentCore as offering the new stateless core and Cloudflare’s Agents SDK as supporting the revision, including MCP servers on Workers. Those examples indicate ecosystem activity; they are not requirements for using MCP.

David Soria Parra, an MCP co-inventor and member of the technical staff, called the release “MCP’s most important since remote MCP first launched over a year ago” in the same announcement. That is a maintainer’s assessment of the release, not independent proof of universal adoption or security.
