A professional golfer does not follow one universal withdrawal procedure: the rules depend on the tour, event and point at which the player stops. Under the PGA TOUR’s 2026 rules, a player generally must notify the designated official, meet the permitted grounds for withdrawal when applicable, and provide supporting documents by the deadline. Stopping during a round is handled differently from withdrawing after finishing it.
Why the timing of a withdrawal matters
The PGA TOUR’s 2026 Player Handbook sets different requirements for four situations: withdrawing before the commitment deadline, withdrawing after that deadline but before the tournament begins, stopping during a round, and withdrawing after completing a round. The handbook applies to PGA TOUR cosponsored, coordinated or approved tournaments; it should not be treated as a rulebook for every professional event. PGA TOUR 2026 Player Handbook and Regulations
How to withdraw under the PGA TOUR’s 2026 rules
Before the commitment deadline
A player may withdraw for any reason before the commitment deadline. The player should notify the Tour that they are withdrawing; the handbook does not impose the later, limited-ground requirements during this window.

Once the commitment deadline has passed, the handbook permits withdrawal before the tournament only for an injury or disability requiring medical attention, or a serious personal emergency. The player must notify the Tour immediately and send written supporting evidence to the Commissioner within 14 days. For a medical withdrawal, a medical professional must document the ailment and prescribed treatment. Fatigue is specifically excluded: the handbook states, “Fatigue will not be considered a valid reason for withdrawing.”
During a round
A player who must stop during a round needs a qualifying injury or disability requiring medical attention, or a serious personal emergency. They must tell the Chief Referee or a PGA TOUR Rules Official and provide written evidence to the Commissioner within 14 days. This is a formal withdrawal process, not simply leaving the course without notice.
After completing a round
After finishing 18 holes, the player must notify the Chief Referee or a PGA TOUR Rules Official and return the signed scorecard. The round remains complete; the withdrawal applies to the next round. If that next round follows a cut, the player remains eligible to make the cut but is not included in later-round groupings.
What can happen if a player leaves without following the process?
The PGA TOUR handbook says a breach of its withdrawal rules may result in a fine, suspension from play, or both. It does not set one automatic, universal fine amount for every breach under this section, so the possible sanction should not be mistaken for a fixed penalty in every case. Why withdrawal labels and exceptions vary by event
PGA of America Professional Championship
The 2026 PGA of America Professional Championship uses WD when a player deliberately stops with a verifiable reason or opts not to start, and requires notice to the committee or a Championship official. Its policy distinguishes WD from NC: NC applies when a player leaves or fails to return a scorecard without a verifiable reason. This is a championship-specific policy, not a standard that governs every tour. PGA of America 2026 Professional Championship Policies
Chrome Tour PGA Open Series
A 2026 trial for the Chrome Tour PGA Open Series waives a withdrawal fee if a player withdraws after completing round one but before the round-two draw is published. The narrow window and trial status matter: it is not a general PGA TOUR exemption. 2026 Chrome Tour PGA Open Series update
LPGA Q-Series
The LPGA Q-Series 2026 regulations page says withdrawals from qualifying stages are subject to a processing fee and/or penalty under a linked policy. The page’s summary does not give the detailed terms, and it addresses Q-Series rather than all LPGA events. LPGA Q-Series 2026 regulations
Older handbooks are examples, not current rules
Older documents illustrate why players need the current event’s regulations rather than assumptions based on another tour or season. The 2023 Challenge Tour handbook allowed certain withdrawals between rounds two or three with notice before close of play; it generally restricted withdrawal after round one or during a round, subject to medical or emergency exceptions and evidence. It stated a £250 fine, doubling for subsequent offences, and a 21-day deadline for written medical evidence in the described exception. These are 2023 Challenge Tour provisions, not verified 2026 main-tour rules. Challenge Tour 2023 Members General Regulations
