A find-me service is a phone or unified communications feature that routes incoming calls to one or more destinations you configure, helping callers reach you through a number associated with you. Depending on the provider, it may ring destinations one after another or ring several at the same time.
What does “find-me” mean?
TERMIUM Plus, the Government of Canada’s terminology resource, defines “find-me/follow-me” as a unified communications feature that can track people across contact numbers and channels such as phones, fax numbers, email addresses, and pagers. In everyday telephone use, the term usually refers to routing calls to configured phone destinations.

It is a service feature, not a special handset or a standalone physical product. Providers may use related labels such as “follow me,” “hunt group,” or “single-number reach,” but those labels do not guarantee identical controls or behavior. How does find-me call routing work?
The service applies routing rules to incoming calls. For example, it might try a desk phone first, then a mobile number if the first destination does not answer. Another configuration might ring both destinations together.

Metaswitch’s Rhino TAS reference describes one implementation in which a subscriber-defined destination sequence can be triggered when a phone is busy, does not answer before a timeout, is switched off, or is out of coverage. If no destination answers, the configuration can send the call to voicemail or play an announcement. These are examples of one vendor’s implementation, not features guaranteed by every provider. Is find-me the same as call forwarding or single-number reach?
Find-me routing is related to call forwarding because both can direct an incoming call to another destination. Find-me/follow-me commonly refers to rules that can try multiple configured destinations, either in sequence or simultaneously; ordinary call forwarding may simply redirect a call to one number. The exact distinction depends on how a provider defines its features.

“Single-number reach” is another related term. In a 2006 decision, Canada’s CRTC described it as a find-me/follow-me service using a virtual telephone number that customers could program to forward calls regardless of location. The decision also described a notification feature for calls waiting while a customer was on the Internet; that historical description does not establish that current providers offer it. Feature names alone do not tell you how a service will behave. Ask the provider about the controls available on the specific plan and in your region:

- Ring pattern: Can destinations ring in sequence, simultaneously, or both?
- Destination limit: How many numbers or endpoints can you configure?
- Routing triggers: Can the next destination be tried when a line is busy, unanswered, switched off, or out of coverage?
- Fallback: What happens if nobody answers: voicemail, an announcement, or another configured destination?
- Schedules and rules: Can routing change by time or under other conditions?
- Availability: Is the feature currently offered for your region and plan?
Availability can change, and the same label may refer to different capabilities. For example, Bell Canada’s tariff for Single Number Reach says new customer requests for that tariff item will not be processed; check directly with the provider for current service options.
